TKC MUST SEE!!! MERRIAM, KANSAS RESIDENTS PUZZLED BY $105K FOR NEW 'PILE OF ROCKS' PUBLIC ART DISPLAY!!!

Funding for public art in the suburbs has proven controversial as budgets grow tighter and services are strained by rising populations and changing demographics.

To be fair, Merriam, Kansas has earned quite a bit of celebration for their recent foray into the public art world.

However . . .

THE LATEST ACTIONS OF THE MERRIAM, KANSAS PUBLIC ART COMMITTEE HAVE OUTRAGED RESIDENTS WHO WANT MORE DISCUSSION!!!

Here's the word from a citizen watchdog of this cozy nearby community:

Hey, TKC, take a look at the proposed new worm (SIC - It's a caterpillar actually) and pile of rocks that Merriam is considering as the next phase of public art funding. The art committee blindsided the city council by giving a presentation at the April 23 city council meeting withholding a photo of the proposed new art until the meeting.

The art committee also didn't tell the council that they wanted them to give approval so they could begin negotiating with the artist. There were four yes votes, three no votes and one abstain. The council should have tabled a decision until they were given more that 15 minutes whether to approve negotiation of a contract on a $105,000 expenditure.

Like it or not, cash for local art adds up quickly.

So far Merriam, Kansas has spent $249,867 on public art. The latest effort will require $105,000 annually until 2020 for a grand total of $564,867.

Accordingly, the rush decision on this artsy pile of rocks has rightfully encountered community push back.

  1. Most of the people at the farmer's market think the "seeds" sculptures are stupid as well. They look like cherries and they seem to confuse most of the shoppers.

  12. Thanks for the post. We think it sucks. No, it simply is not worth $105,000.
They need to seek a gift instead of trying to pull stunts like this garbage.

  13. Whoever gave you the information that it would cost $105k annually is either a pathological liar trying to stir shit up, or just badly misinformed. There will be no recurring cost to this sculpture.

I wonder what other facts he made up. Tony, did you check any of it before publishing?

Support for the arts -- merde! A government-supported artist is an incompetent whore!

  15. The cost is justified if the artist is a member of a minority and makes the TV news, diversity sells.

  16. Most artists are unemployed faggots and queers.
