TKC BREAKING NEWS!!! MAYOR SLY JAMES CONVENES KCMO GROUP TO CONSIDER MLK NAME CHANGE ON THE PASEO!!!

Kansas City voters have been waiting for the Mayor to weigh in on the current culture war crisis over street nomenclature in honor of MLK. Now, THANKS TO AWESOME TKC TIPSTERS, we've got first word of breaking news on the subject rather than just more opinion.

AWESOME TKC TIPSTER SEND THIS NOTE REVEALING MAYOR SLY SOON TO FORM COMMITTEE TO STUDY THE MLK NAME CHANGE!!!

Behind the scenes, the Mayor was very cautious in entering the fray here because many of the strongest supporters of the name change have also been his opposition on tax and development issues. Nevertheless, this move compliments (and possibly contradicts) a scheduled rally to start a petition for the name change tomorrow.

Here's the word . . .

Subject: Renaming The Paseo

Dear Colleagues.

We've all been hearing from many citizens and community leaders about the proposal to rename The Paseo in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

After talking with Congressman Cleaver about the need to find the best way to honor Dr. King's legacy. I have decided to convene a group of trusted community leaders to consider this issue, engage the broader community, and after doing so, make a recommendation within 45 days.

I have asked this group to focus its work on recommending a solution that truly honors Dr. King and his ideals of equity and respect, and aligns with the City's long-term planning goals and vision for an inclusive community.

I'll share more details at a brief press announcement tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Heritage Center, which you're all welcome to attend.

Sincerely,

Mayor Sly James

  1. Sly needed to do something.

Hope there is a chance for compromise here not just ultimatums.

    1. Give Sly credit here, he could have just jumped aboard the bandwagon but it seems like he's wanting to take some time and think about the issue.

  2. He’s gonna convene a group of black preachers so we know how this is gonna turn out already, rename the few blocks in 18th and vine if they have to do something

  3. ^^^ Actually, I think they're stalling. The vote would be much quicker. The group should just go ahead with the petition drive and ignore this.

  4. Can't leave anything alone need another black memorial to a myth. They never push for anyone but blacks.

  5. Inclusion is not advanced by naming a street after a racial figure. The name change will only doom the whole Paseo corridor to further segregation from the larger community. Why aren't the mayor and other leaders aware of this ? They were not elected to only represent the demands of the black racist in the city. This renaming will only further divide the residents of the city.

  6. Yes, it will further divide the city, after 50 yrs. what is this really about? This is nothing but a racist ploy, they had better think twice before they do this!!!!

  7. This is really about nothing more than moving the Troost dividing line further West now that we are making some progress in improving the 3rd. The ministers would rather sacrifice the fortunes of the entire neighborhood than risk losing political control of their people.

    1. The Paseo is east of Troost.

  8. Malcolm X Blvd would be a better choice.

  9. The best plan would be to put Jolie Justus in charge of this committee.
If her committee to "study" crime and violence and make recommendations is any example, and unfortunately it is, NOTHING would happen.
    Good result.
Now on to harnessing some of the "reverends'" energy to address a real and serious issue.
150 homicides, with the vast majority east of Troost, seems like a good place for them to start.

  10. Mayor. Who did you trust this already decided decision to? Just tell one truth this year. Plaese.

  14. Letting the ministers dictate the landscape of KC is a dangerous proposition. Glad to see they're putting the breaks on this thing.

  15. no committees to discuss how not to be a stat in the police logs but lets worry about the name of a goddam street.

  16. D. Brown: it seems the city would show greater diversity in renaming Ward Parkway or Wornall. At least put it up for a vote.
