TKC BREAKING AND EXCLUSIVE NEWS!!! INSIDERS FEAR EXORBITANT LICENSING FEES FOR KANSAS CITY TRIBUTE TO MLK!!!

Recent talk of renaming The Paseo Blvd or finding another venue to honor the legacy of slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. has heretofore ignored the sordid topic of coin. In the latest conversation about an appropriate Kansas City tribute to MLK the question of payment to the lucrative licensing business run by the King family was purposely neglected.

To wit . . .

KANSAS CITY INSIDERS TELL TKC THAT CITY HALL IS PREPARED TO PAY THE KING FAMILY LICENSING BIZ BIG BUCKS BUT DOESN'T WANT PUBLIC DEBATE REGARDING THE BUDGET!!!

Here's the word . . .

"I think we all know this could be a valuable step forward for Kansas City no matter how we choose to honor Dr. King's legacy. Taxpayers would gladly fund any reasonable cost. But City Hall hopes to present the bill as a lump sum rather than an itemized list that will show a good chunk of taxpayer funding spent on very expensive licensing fees that have proven controversial."

Accordingly, here's are a few highlights of the high price of using MLK's words and images . . . Thankfully, this photo was taken by the Marines and is free from copyright claims:

But I digress . . .

A monument might be too rich for Kansas City . . .

"The builders of the new Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial at the National Mall had to pay $761,160 for the right to use King's words and images, according to financial documents obtained by the Associated Press. The money went to Intellectual Properties Management Inc. — a foundation controlled by King's youngest son, Dexter. Another $71,000 was paid out in a "management fee" to the family estate back in 2003."

A war among the King family has pushed fees higher and raised objections at this year's big game . . .

"Dodge (owned by Chrysler) used a recording of a Martin Luther King Jr. speech in a controversial Super Bowl ad on Sunday. It kicked up quite a lot of controversy -- even though his speeches have been used to sell other things in the past, including both cars and mobile phones."

Any quote from Dr. King's "I Have A Dream" Speech is likely too expensive for KCMO public tribute:

"Critics, including civil rights icon Julian Bond, bristle over the fact that “I Have a Dream” is kept under strict watch in the name of controlling King’s image at the same time it’s licensed by rich companies for use in TV commercials, including a 2010 Mercedes-Benz spot, an Alcatel ad, and a particularly galling 2001 Cingular Wireless campaign that also included quotes from Kermit the Frog and Homer Simpson."

And so . . .

CITY HALL INSIDERS ESTIMATE THAT LICENSING KANSAS CITY TRIBUTE TO MLK COULD COST AROUND $100K TO START ALONG WITH ANNUAL BILLING TO RENEW PERMISSIONS!!!

Thing of it is, the Revs and politicos already know that honoring MLK comes with a hefty price tag but shy away from talking about costs with MSM.

Many proponents of the street naming proposal actually considered copyright and licensing fees and hoped the plain text tribute would circumvent larger payments - That's not that case and other municipalities already have payed the King family big bucks for their own memorials.

Either way, right now the behind the scenes consideration of local MLK tribute hopes to quiet discussion of a City Hall funding mechanism for a proposed name change or any other local, taxpayer funded MLK memorial.

    1. Hey now, let's not forget about consultant's fees in order to bring the idea into fruition. That money has to be spent locally as well.

    2. The gravy train never stops. I'm not opposed to the memorial but I do think we need some way to make sure that the spending doesn't get out of control. It seems to me that the street rename might be the cheaper option overall if a monument is going to cost KCMO in perpetuity.

    3. Look how much we pay for Liberty Memorial. We tried to dump it off on the feds and they don't want it. I'm sure the MLK monument or street will only be the 2nd expensive item that KCMO is stuck paying for.

      Delete
  2. It seems to me that the petitions are invalid if they don't include a funding mechanism. That's the same way they got Clay Chastain for his gondola plans. I'm afraid to think of what they'll ask for. At least a million and most of it will go to King's families lawyers since they won't stop suing each other.

  3. King never came to Kansas City so why should KC want to keep his family in Escalades all these years after his death. This is something that should be financed through private funds and not taxpayer money.

    ReplyDelete
  4. They should call this the MLK timeshare plan.

  5. King family is nothing but a bunch of shysters. Unbealivabile anyone would consider going along with this crap. Naming rights ?! Total Bull Shit

  6. "I think we all know this could be a valuable step forward for Kansas City no matter how we choose to honor Dr. King's legacy. Taxpayers would gladly fund any reasonable cost."

Yeah? Put it to a vote. You are f------ nuts! Taxpayers want their water bills to stop rising. Fuck you!

  7. Why is Kansas city all of the sudden so concerned about MlK after 50 yrs? I don't believe this has anything to do with MLK, it's more of a black thing just like changing the name of Nichols Fountain. As a taxpayer of Kansas City I would NOT gladly fund this! The above posts are right, it should be funded by private funds not taxpayers money! Build it and we will tear it down!

  8. I am not one to show up and protest, but I will if that stupid rename the airport idea gets any traction. Line in the sand.

  9. Yeah the blacks really deserve to be honored around here. They are setting the example for being civilised.

  13. 10:20 you ignorant slut, the King family has raked in money right and left in licensing fees for using his name and words. Many cases have gone to court with the courts ruling in favor of the King family. And the King family has a company working everyday looking for more ways to expand their licensing programs.

The only idiot who is stupid here is YOU!

  15. I don't think there should be a problem with pain a licensing fee. I'm sure a great portion of that money goes to keeping the legacy of Dr. King alive. One of the previous commenters said that we should put it to a vote. I absolutely agree I think you will find the majority of Kansas City voters would have no problem approving a fair proposal.

    ReplyDelete
  16. No wonder the city council doesn't want a debate about how much money they will have to pay the king family. If they were to tell the public most how much tax payer money they be spending the people would say hell No!

And that would be just from the darkies side.

    ReplyDelete
  17. How about a special TDD district on each side of Paseo?

    ReplyDelete
  18. An MLK memorial should be PRIVATELY funded. Taxpayers have enough on their plate with schools, subsidies and the rising costs of services. Not to mention our growing pension requirements.

    ReplyDelete
  19. 9:12 you mean “the national ww1 war museum” what part of national don’t you understand?

  20. Name me one person who would charge a “licensing fee” to have the honor of having a street named after them? I can wait.

That is pure money grabbing bullshit.

And that idiot sLIE will pay it too since it’s not his money, oh god, does this mean we had to pay that grifter rev car wash. Ugh!

    ReplyDelete
  22. 12:22 hey dummy, you just got trolled! Lmao!

    ReplyDelete
  23. For anyone who thinks a huge licensing fee is unlikely, they might want to consider the fact that the Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington was UNABLE to include any MLK memorabilia from the King family because THEY COULDN'T AFFORD to pay the prices demanded.
It's really too bad, but that's the King legacy.

  26. 77 years ago I was born in Kansas City, Mo and basically worked my entire life for the City. I am now selling my home and moving out of Kansas City to a smaller home in a rural town some miles away. This is the most dysfunctional government at both the city and county level that one could imagine. The taxes are high, crime is high and no one seems to care. I recently came into contact with a KCMO police officer as a witness to a crime. I listened to this officer and his supervisor for about 30 minutes and it became abundantly clear that neither of them had the remotest idea of how to preform their duties. I have two grown children both of whom are married and have families and both of them moved out of Kansas City recently. I am so sad to see what is happening to my city.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Maybe a solution: Make an offer to The "MLK Foundation" to buy the naming rights to "The Paseo". Just like Sprint ponied up for The Sprint Center. The City didn't pay Sprint, Sprint paid the city.

If they don't like the deal then pass on naming anything. That will give you a clear and true picture if they want recognition for a great statesman or just want the money.

    ReplyDelete
  28. MLK was a lying fat fucker. How about naming the Paseo Lying Fat Fucker Blvd.

    ReplyDelete
  29. What happens to the organizations and entities with the name "Paseo" in them, like the Paseo Baptist Church, one of the best known in the area? Sounds like an unnecessary disruption in a lot of lives to me.

  32. Ahahahahaha! Everything in life is all about the bottomline.

Of course the descendants of a civil rights advocate are going to capitalize on his name. Well, that wouldn't be American if they didn't.

God, makes you wonder about the Kennedys, Lincolns, Bushes and every other historical figure. Did they get royalties too?

But let's waste fucking name on street name instead of putting more police on a street, especially after a father was shot and killed after not giving a cig to a worthless nig.

This town sucks big backwards dick.

  37. The GOLDEN STATE KILLER was a cop during the first four years of his crimes!

He was arrested for shoplifting a HAMMER and DOG REPELLANT SPRAY! Which is probably why witnesses and victims who survived said he had a bad smell, and why dogs seemingly avoided him. He QUIT the police department instead of fighting the shoplifting charges! Yeah, no kidding.

He has TWO daughters and was married TWICE.

Dude was also the Visilla (sp?) ransacker before he started raping!

    Dude served in the military.

Dude LIVED IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD WHERE MOST OF HIS CRIMES OCCURRED - STILL TO THIS DAY. Fuck.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I also read that the GOLDEN STATE KILLER thought about moving to Kansas City but the shoplifting carnage on the Plaza and black on black murders scared him away! SCARED THE GOLDEN STATE KILLER! Fuuuuuccckkk, dude.

  46. If you want to name a street after MLK, you don't need his family's permission.

    Don't pay this bribe.

    It's unenforceable.

They aren't preserving his legacy with this crab, they are harming it.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I'm very much opposed to renaming it at all, but if you must, just call it "Martin Luther King Boulevard" and insist it's named after his father, they don't control that.

    ReplyDelete
  48. You know regardless of what you think of this dude, that is arrogant name for a fella.

    ReplyDelete
  49. When black men were slaves they didn't have last names. When they were told that they had to chose a name, most of them took the name the man that owned them, but one of them said, "Can I chose any name I want?". When he was told that he could indeed chose any name he wanted he said, "Then I want to be Mr. King. I've been a slave & now I am a king!" One of his descendants was given the name of Martin Luther because of who Martin Luther was, & that's how we came to Martin Luther King, Jr.

It's especially cool if racist scum don't like it.

You could always build a time machine & go back in time & cause the first slave ship to be turned back. Then the founders wouldn't have been such hypocrites, & you wouldn't have to be such an asshole.

  50. Don't forget all the businesses and properties that will have to have their stationary reprinted because of the name change. Who picks up that tab?
