SHAME!!! $3-MILLION+ SHORT!!! LOCAL PET LOVERS FAIL TO PAY FAIR SHARE FOR NEW LUXURY KANSAS CITY ANIMAL SHELTER!!!

A year after voters agreed to chip-in the vast majority of funding, Kansas City pet lovers aren't anywhere close to coming up with their portion of the cash needed for the new animal shelter campus project.

Recently, Mayor & Council gave final approval of $18 million in GO KC bonds from the city - That was after concerns of a NO BID contract stirred City legal into a frenzy of sketchy assurances about pending complaints. And that's $4-MILLION MORE THAN WHAT WAS INITIALLY PLEDGED BY VOTERS!!!

Even more interestingly, public discussion of the shelter's progress reveals . . .

The KC Pet Project is $3-million short in funding required by City Hall in this public/private partnership

PR Juggernaut Roshann Parris and Kristi Wyatt, senior vice president of the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce have offered their assurances in meeting this goal.

However, here's an insider look at how this thing is going to unfold . . .

AFTER A YEAR-LONG FUNDRAISING DROUGHT, INSIDERS FEAR KANSAS CITY PET LOVERS WON'T CLOSE THE FUNDING GAP AND CITY HALL WILL BE FORCED TO PICK UP AN EVEN GREATER PORTION OF THE TAB!!!

Here's perspective from behind the scenes . . .

"They're not going to meet their goal. Council will provide another emergency ordnance to close the gap and that will be the end of it. People love their pets but there simply isn't that kind of private funding available in the metro . . . Unless some rich old lady kicks the bucket and leaves millions to her dog

None of this is to say that the local animal activist community didn't do more than their fair share in getting the ballot question passed. The public relations and good will they provided ultimately helped pass all of the GO Bonds. But when it comes to cold hard cash and asking people to chip in . . . It just doesn't make any sense . . . Why pay for something when the city is picking up most of the bill? That's the problem fundraisers are encountering and it's pretty hard to make a plea when all of the spin coming out of City Hall is upbeat. Meanwhile, I think pet lovers are more inclined to help animal rescue missions where the needs are more immediate."

Accordingly . . .

In the aftermath, Kansas City taxpayers might want to remind animal lovers of their funding BROKEN PROMISE ANIMAL SHELTER FUNDING FAIL as they continue to ask City Hall for more doggie park and animal care resources during the warmer months.

Developing . . .

    1. I think what's important to focus on here is the broken promise to voters which should invalidate the legislation and what the council passed if there was anybody serious about protecting taxpayer interests.

The shelter was only guaranteed $14-million. That's what voters approved.

$14 million was what KC promised. At the end of the day we're talking about KCMO coming up with $20 million with only a few hundred thousand from the pet project. If that. It's a bait and switch of the highest order. And the so-called advocates are all going to be on the animal shelter payroll with little oversight for the the city.

The shelter focuses on cute cats and dogs but it's looking more like a refuge for hogs at the trough.

Put a cute dog crying in the commercial and KC will vote for another 20 million easily.

    3. A better idea would be to spay and neuter the plethora of trash, black and white, who crank out kids they know they can’t support. The money saved in one month of bennies to them would build an animal shelter on par with the Taj Mahal.

  4. Done voting for any further tax increases for this city. Never ever will I vote for any increase no matter what the cause.

  5. Ditto 11:34, but the KC suckers will vote for all taxes. Saved a cat from KC Pet Project couple of years ago. Indoor cat. Paid what I thought was substantial fee, to take off city's hands. Then got dinged yearly for license fee. Screw KC. You deal with the strays with no further help from me. This town would tax your eyeballs if they could. Short on funds, Well Big Fuckin' Surprise. If the shelter was at 18th and Vine, sLIE wold fund it and run a toy train to the front door.

    1. 11:48, I’ve read your complaints on here before about the pet license. I think it’s great that you adopted a homeless pet, but having to keep a pet licensed is a requirement in every city I’ve lived in. I really don’t think anyone tried to pull a fast one on you. That being said, it might be a good idea for the city to waive licensing fees on shelter pets as long as owners have proof of current vaccinations.

They could have viewed the entire nation's listing of shelters ONLINE all they wanted. And, a short trip to Lawrence, KS would have been very helpful to view a most excellent facility. They're at 88% of their almost $7.5 million goal for a new 20,000sq.ft. building. The current operations serving nearly 30,000 animals has great staff, volunteers, and vet affiliates. They do great care and socialize pets very well.

For an additional couple of hours drive there is another top facility in Manhattan, KS on the KSU campus. Duh! World renowned for animal sciences and research. Mudzoory Diversity University system surely has some animal...uh, nevermind.

Add a K9 cops training center and the money should flow. Use those fat funds wisely. Hire more people PoPos to go with the pup PoPos on frequent patrols. There's too much crime in Killa Shitty. Decent citizens want good leaders doing right.

  11. Why is the new and improved animal shelter going to be built in Swope Park? The shelter will be run as a private facility, not City run (thank goodness). Yes, the animal shelter we have is horrid, but why does it have to be in Swpoe Park? Aren't there thousands of other places that are already vacant that would fit the usage for an animal shelter?
Leave Swope Park for the entire citizenry of this failure of a city.

I did not vote for the GO bonds, did not vote the reinstatement of the last tax, our city council is corrupt, the city manager is corrupt and Sly Lies. He doesn't care, he's a lame duck.

  16. Anyone who ever goes to city hall to pitch a "project" knows very well that all they have to do is to low-ball the clueless electeds, get their foot in the door, get approval and start the project, and the taxpayers are sure to make up the difference once the original budget fails.
It's the 'ole "We've come this far and can't stop now" routine.
    And it works every time.
Just as a prior commentator pointed out, the P&L District is short of projections by $15 million every year.
And don't imagine that Burke's hotel is done dialing for dollars at 12th and Oak.
KCMO city government's "budget" is little more than a big big public piggy bank.
And there's certainly no shortage of piggies.

  22. 11:20 your post made you look as DUMB as you are- What you should have said if you had a brain would have been - There wouldnt be a need for shelters if the people who have pets that shouldnt were responsible and commited to that pet that they own, throw away or mistreat! The reason the pet industry is a multi billion dollar a year industry is because the people that deserve them , take care of them, and spend money on them and are not the people like you! Its like this - REAL pet owners take care of their pet, because they have the money to take care of them: Feed them, water them, Vaccinate them, license them, and for sure love them which is why they do all of that! these type of pet owners dont chain them to trees with chains around their necks that you would use to pull a car, they dont leave them in hot cars to die, they dont keep them outside in the winter to freeze, they make sure the pet they made a commitment too has everything they need. 11:20- any idea where your kids (human kids) are, did you feed them? do you take them to the doctor / dentist? do you feed them real food and not ramen noodles? Maybe you dont have human kids, and I sure hope you dont have a pet of any kind but either way you shouldnt talk about shit you know nothing about!!

If the voter doesn't live up the agreement. We need to think about the proper way to live up to what electorate decided. Not just give away money.
