KCFD Overtime Hot Mess Continues

There's no solution in the current budget and during an election year, don't expect City Hall politicos to challenge any voting bloc . . . Here's another round-up and explanation of why KCMO is going broke . . .

KC councilman: No easy method to solve fire department overtime problem

Kansas City finance officials are trying to get to the bottom of a report that reveals huge overtime costs in the city's fire department. The audit showed the overtime budget was $16 million dollars last year and $12 million in 2016.

  1. No solution, my foot. Start with privatization of the EMS service. MAST didn't experience these cost overruns. This boils down to mismanagement.

Second, KCFD should be running three person crews instead of four person crews on each apparatus. That would greatly reduce the manpower required per shift, and consequently the overtime costs. The new Fire Chief should be selected only if they commit to making these two changes.

    1. MAST wasn't private. It was paid for by the city. The only way the iaff could have represented the Mast employees is if they weren't a private company. There hasn't been a privately-run ambulance service in this city for over 30 years. The reason there hasn't been is because 30 years ago the privately-run services were doing such a piss-poor shitshow of a job that the city actually stepped in and try to right the ship, by creating a single unified ambulance service.

  5. Those of you who have never worked on a large city fire department yearly budget have no idea how hard it is to figure labor costs.

If you present a larger budget to cover reduce overtime figures the city will just reduce your budget to a figure they like to brag to the voters about. This applies to any public safety budget in any city or county. Emergencies at the wrong time creates overtime costs. Major emergencies creates huge overtime costs.

Too many uncontrollable incidents from weather to human error cause uncontrollable overtime costs in any public safety operation.

  13. The Fire fighters on their down time need to do administrative stuff. They are non productive on idle time. Doing paperwork will reduce the amount of staff needed. How's that pension fund doing guys?!
