KANSAS CITY STUDENTS WALKOUT PROTEST AGAINST GUN RIGHTS AFTERMATH: WHAT DID WE LEARN???

This afternoon youngsters in Kansas City, MO stepped out at the forefront of a national movement as local media celebrated their skip day in order to challenge the 2nd Amendment.

A few highlights and not so fun fact . . .

This wasn't a 17-minute march and looked more like an all day affair that didn't end with a return to class as advertised.

City Hall has proven pretty much powerless in the gun debate so obviously local youngsters haven't studied much about municipal or statewide politics.

To be fair, local participation in this youth movement against guns is bigger than anything KCMO has seen in more than a generation and doesn't bode well for staunch defenders of the 2nd Amendment look toward the future of the electorate.

As always, we put it to our blog community . . .

WHAT DID KANSAS CITY LEARN FROM TODAY'S STUDENT WALKOUT PROTEST AGAINST CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS???

  9. Yep youngsters expressing themselves...right, let them express themselves the next time some idiot with a gun, hammer, knife or whatever else comes bashing through their door at night, or tries to rob them while walking to their cars on the Plaza, or carjacks them at a red light.

What exactly do they want done? Instead of standing around with a stupid sign come up with some solutions.

These kids wanted nothing more than to get out of class....been there done that!

  12. Locally we learned that young people apparently are much more concerned about what happens in other cities around the country than they are about what goes on in their own neighborhoods.
More interested in events in Cleveland, Ohio than they are about tragedies on Cleveland Avenue in KCMO.
Signs that express concern about the carrier's safety based on the tragedy in Florida, but ignore the 150 murders right here in KCMO don't show any serious interest in issues that could certainly use the kind of energy, involvement, and engagement that these students purport ot have.
Marching and increasing the number of Twitter followers don't mean beans.

  17. 7:48 mirrors one of my thoughts,,. What do they want, youre not gettin rid of guns, you cant wish them out of existence. People backpatting this courageous generation. They live in lala land, it just feels good to bow your head in noble contrition. Or to rabble rouse, but those same courageous students will still have clicks have falling outs over trite conflicts, will still ignore or bully that weird kid who might shoot up his class.

  18. This is the age group know to be eating Tide Pods. Leaving school to protest the 2nd amendment ,many of which know nothing about. Not the kind of social change American needs. But when you have bad parenting what more do you expect out of these kids.

Parents stop acting as your kids best friend and start acting like parents.

How many of the shooters in the schools where minors? Between 2013 and 2015, an average of two school shootings took place at K-12 schools each month. Among shootings at K-12 schools in which the age of the shooter was known, 56 percent (39 of 70) were perpetrated by minors. Appears to me that those kids need to be more concerned with one another and not guns.

  22. Super Dave, your numbers are way wrong, I’m not sure where you got those numbers but they are way, way off. I read recently about how anything related to school or the grounds are counted and the majority were after hours, at schools that had been closed. They also counted suicides which is where the focus should really be. The reality is these numbers are not telling the whole truth.

  26. You're right to a degree 8:20 but school is a school no matter what time of day it is. And a lot of those shootings outside of local coverage nobody hears about it. But the Florida shooting is front and center on these kids minds and it was a student their age that did it. So the point that a lot are making is that it's more a student issue than a gun issue.

    ReplyDelete
  27. My older two children participated in this. When I asked them why they were planning to walk out, one told me "Because our school needs more security," and the other said "To get out of class,"

7:50 has a similar takeaway as I did; the daily gun violence that happens in our cities is more disturbing than the random attacks that happen in suburban gun free zones. Why is it that I hear gunshots nearly every night in my neighborhood and Kansas City had a near record homicide rate last year, but it takes 17 white kids in Florida being shot for anyone to care? And then their solution is "ban 'assault style rifles'" which is the most assinine, uninformed reaction to the problem.

But finally, how many of these kids that walked out of school today have pictures of themselves on social media posing with guns? And how many of them are the ones cruisong around our city at night shooting in the air, at signs, or even at houses? Y'all can claim that's racist if you'd like but we *know* many of these kids are doing this.

I just feel that many of these kids are being used as part of a left wing anti-gun campaign that makes white folks with an agenda feel empowered, but there are much more strategic, intelligent, or educational things they can do with their time other than walk out of class to "protest" something.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hillary 2020! Keep the dream alive.

  29. President Donald Trump touted raising the minimum age to buy rifles and other long guns to 21 during a meeting with a bipartisan group of lawmakers at the White House on Wednesday, quipping at one point that senators are "afraid of the NRA" and the age issue.

"Joe and Pat, in your bill, what are you doing about the 18 to 21?" Trump asked.

They replied that the bill does not address that issue.

"Are you going to leave that?" Trump asked.

"Whatever you want us—" Manchin started before Trump cut in.

"You have a case right now where somebody can buy a handgun at 21," Trump said. "Now this is not a popular thing to say in terms of the NRA … You can buy the kind of weapon used in the school shooting at 18,"

"The people in this room pretty much are going to decide, but I would give very serious thought to it," Trump said. "I can say that the NRA is opposed to it, and I'm a fan of the NRA. No bigger fan. I'm a big fan of the NRA. These are great people. These are great patriots. They love our country, but that doesn't mean we have to agree on everything."

Toomey said the age limit question is not addressed in the bill.

"You know why? Because you're afraid of the NRA, right?" Trump said, laughing.

"A lot of people are afraid of that issue, raising the age for that weapon to 21," Trump said.

    -----
Then Trump met with the NRA. Had a good (great) meeting. Then he caved. Trump is more scared of the NRA than anyone. On the record, with his own words.

  30. Lee's Summit school district sent out a detailed message to parents about how they will help facilitate the walkout. It will happen at a certain time, in certain areas, won't impact student work, etc. Does this sound like an act of protest or a bunch of young teenagers getting to goof off for a bit instead of being in class? The national and state teacher's unions have been very vocal on this issue. Whether coordinated to that level or not, it speaks the opinions of teachers that are enabling the protest. My takeaway - don't read too much into a bunch of kids walking out of school today.

I wish kids, parents, educators, etc. would put their energy towards doing something that will make them safer. Imagine if the time and energy was spent talking about mental illness, bullying, and preempting their peers that may be walking down the path of violence. Imagine if the level of effort spent on the #metoo movement was put towards engaging and helping this issue? Wow - that would be impactful.

"Grades up, guns down." Ok, turn in the guns you know your friends have in their possession. Or, turn in your friends that you know have guns.

"hey, hey, ho, ho we just want the guns to go." Fair enough, take the guns away from your loved ones.

"only love, no hate, we just want to graduate." Great, remind your friends to study and stay in school and graduate.

  39. 2nd amendment doesn't need to change.

It only guarantees rights those in a "well regulated militia" defending the free state. Militia, not civilians.

Sporting, hunting, even self defense via firearms is not a constitutionally guaranteed right. The NRA has been selling a lie to their sycophants. Chief Juster Burger called the NRA's interpretation a "fraud".

Deal with it. Bans are coming. Keep ridiculing the protesters. We'll see who is "LMAO" in November.

  41. 3,000 school districts out of 127,000 school districts participated in this desperate attempt by the left to garner meaningless attention from lying MSM outlets as, once again, proven by the 14 month Russia hoax. The WePa race won by a pro-life, pro-2nd Amendment anti-Pelosi says America is trending fast towards ridding this nation of the actual hypocritical racist marxist-socialist left that destroys the very fabric of this country. Honest Americans are waking up every day to the truth, and the left knows this, thus the doubling down on their crazy antics. Be prepared for more news heavy “tragedies” in the coming months when indictments and grand jurys are called for the previous administration. The radical left loses every day now.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Fox News lied to you again 11:34.

WePA was won by a pro-choice, pro-Obamacare, and pro-union Democrat. 2nd amendment? OK, he shot a ad where he handled a high powered rife, but so did Jason Kander in MO. That's all it takes to prove you support guns?? OK. Ignore the fact Lamb supports universal background checks to stop gun show sales to felons, domestic abusers and the mentally ill.

Keep whistling past the electoral graveyard. RIP GOP November 2018.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You're mistaken, 2:41. Conor Lamb is more conservative than John Kasich, a GOP presidential candidate from 2016. You're down playing the fact that he used a "high powered rifle" in his ads when the left is literally using children to rally the country around regulations on "high powered rifles"

"Pro-Obamacare" means he doesn't want to fully repeal it, but that's a moot point now that the indovoindimandate has been removed and it has imploded.

And "pro-union" in Western Pennsylvania means "pro US steel" and "pro coal miner"

California Democrats are making a hard push to the left; Conor Lamb clearly understands this is not a winning strategy.

If more Democrats were like Conor Lamb instead of Nancy Pelosi, they wouldn't need a cult of personality like Barack Obama to win elections.
