Kansas City Mayor Sly Promises 'Other Options' For Harley-Davidson Workers Suffering Layoffs

Here's a bold statement in passing that considers local political reaction to recent high-profile layoffs . . .

Here's the quote and audio from a recent Missourinet interview . . .

(Mayor Sly) James also addressed the scheduled closing of Harley-Davidson’s Kansas City assembly plant.

He says Harley-Davidson’s decision was a corporate one, based on sales. James also says city leaders were told after the announcement that there was nothing they could have done to prevent the closing.

“But the good news is that Kansas City is moving forward, we’re creating jobs and we’ll work hard to make sure that the people who are no longer going to be employed there have other options,” says James. “That’s what we’re going to do.”

So far, other than generic economic development hype, there's no word on HOW the Mayor will provide those options.

Developing . . .

  1. Jobs for rednecks--and those who build for rednecks--go to the head of the line?

Anyone see a problem with that? Except maybe Trump?? I guess Sly is starting his campaign for Congress...maybe he's moving back north of the river. Oh wait, that should be easy, since he doesn't currently OWN a house. Or a Harley. He RENTS, at 108 E. 30th St., on Union Hill.

  4. Hey 9:39, while you're enjoying your $75 per paycheck bump from the tax cuts, the 1% thanks you for his $20,000 per paycheck take home. Oldest trick in the book, 3 guys at a table, 10 cookies - One guy takes 9 and tells the other two "better get yours before the other guy takes it". Works every time on "Conservative" middle class Republicans.

And before you spout your trickle down BS, bring some facts to support it. We've already seen how that story works out in Kansas. A wealthy lawyer takes the extra cash and takes his family to Cancun.

  5. Myb the 10,000$ terrif per bike China as put on Harley hurts..China the biggest bike market in the world and no USA bikes..moving the facility overseas and start making smaller bikes will help with getting bikes in there..it hurts workers but that's terrifs..MAGA...

  6. Oh hell yea! We all know that those Harley workers will be getting work at McDonalds for $15.00 per hour any minute now. Just ask King Sly. People are just dying to work in KC where you have two employers with every job, one being KC itself. I'm betting that if those workers could go to Pennsylvania like Harley-Davidson they'd be gone in a flash.

WTF, 9:52, where did you get the fuzzy math for $75 and $20K?

So, $75 gained by makers instead of $75 grabbed back by takers is a benefit to "Liberal" middle class Democrats and so many other earners. Wow, they could then get an almost full bag of groceries and have some cash left for a 12 pack of beer.

And at that other table (from the Dems playbook), 3 babymamas, 10 kiddies between them from 9 non-support babydaddies (who are nowhere in sight)-- with 13 OVERFLOWING PLATES OF A VARIETY OF DELICIOUS COOKIES AND 13 GALLONS OF WHOLE MILK set before them each week on those EBTs -- thanks to those middle class taxed PAYCHECKS!

  11. What about Trump's promise that manufacturing jobs losses would not happen under his watch?

In fact, Trump says there are tons of manufacturing jobs coming back to the US from overseas. HOG workers should have their pick of good paying jobs as promised by the Tangerine Idi Amin. Unless he lied. Again.

  12. More PR for Sly's benefit and nobody elses since he isn't going to do squat.

  13. 1:51, you're lying. Again.

  14. 3:51 - So you're saying Trump DIDN'T promise to keep and bring manufacturing back to the US??

Really? That was only his 2nd favorite riff at his rallies, right behind Mexico paying for a wall.

If you can't admit the most basic reality, do us all a favor and shut the fuck up.

Unemployment was cut in half under Obama. Nearly 10% to under 5% during his 2 terms. Stock market tripled.

  20. 1:44 is correct about 12:07. (this would be so much more fun if you used nicknames, it's still private. )

During Obama era, they just changed the RULE for counting the unemployed--how many continuous weeks one had been applying officially for unemployment. Since many were discouraged, they stopped looking. So the metric that was reported went down. There were still 10% unemployed. As the song says, "This is how we do it..."

  21. MORE COOKIE MONSTERS = Huge sucker. The 1% thanks you for your support and padding their Investment portfolio while you piss and moan over the crumbs going to takers. Don't spend your $75 per paycheck in one place sucker. Geezuz, study economics or learn how to read a projected budget. Republicans gotta love dipshits like you. When your parent's (or yours for that matter) Social Security check is cut and their Medicare benefits slashed to pay for the 1% Investment Portfolio padding, let me know how you like this new tax plan then. I'm sure it will be poor peoples faults somehow.

  22. Tracy, that "rule change" doesn't impact how the unemployed are counted. Those are two different stats.

The Dems increased the number of weeks eligible for benefits due to the great recession. Up to 99 weeks. In 2014 it was dropped back to 26 weeks as the economy improved. Fewer claims paid paid after that reduction, but that's not how the unemployed are counted.

The surveys used to count those actually looking for work (regardless of benefit status) continues in the same way.

If you want to argue the under employed or discouraged numbers through a different verified measured stat is higher than 5%, fine. Those are available; however, those haven't changed much lately either. Trump doesn't get credit for 4.1%.

As Trump pointed out, there were 95 million Americans out of the work force under Obama. Guess what, there still are.
