Kansas City Innocence & Compensation

Just a quick check-in right now and shout out to the the late night denizens, insomniacs and dedicated shift workers among our blog community.

Two clips this evening offer disparate perspectives on the justice system and they're both worthy of consideration . . .

Here's an examination of prison industrial complex push back and the plight of an innocent man wrongly convicted . . .

"The state of Kansas won’t give Lamonte McIntyre one dime after wrongfully imprisoning him for 23 years."

And then a dude who is not quite so innocent and unwilling to explain his circumstances . . .

Piers Morgan comes face to face with Lorenzo Gilyard, a man who terrorized the streets of Kansas City for over two decades and killed 13 times.

Hopefully, more for the morning update . . . STAY TUNED!!!

  1. Lamonte McIntyre can never have those years back so how do you put a price tag on that time. But he is owed something for his time that the courts and the state took away from him.

  2. Well in Jackson County, nobody fears being sent to prison whether they are guilty or not. Jean Petersucker Baker is the weakest prosecutor ever.

    1. I don’t know who you are but you write this slur every time crime or the jail are mentioned. Your anger is palpable and I suspect it’s destroying you from the inside out. I’d encourage you to reach out and talk to someone who can help you. Resentment is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die. You probably deserve better for yourself than this.

    2. We deserve a better prosecutor than Jean Petersucker Baker and it sounds like that causes you to have a resentment. Better take your own inventory.

    3. I’m not debating her record. For me it would be anecdotal. I just don’t see why you have to call her vulgar names to make your point. It paints you as misogynistic, which you may not be. I think your points would fall in the ears of a larger audience if you could express yourself without being vulgar.

  3. Our prison system needs work. We need to get the innocent people out and find a more effective way to deal with reprobate killers like Gilyard.

U.S. has more people in jail than any other industrialized nation. Time to start cleaning house or putting people to work.

3 hots & a cot? hope, convicts need to start earning their keep.

  5. ^^^^^^^^^^The larger audience has already seen what a failure she is.

  6. The state of Kansas owes that guy at least 10 million and probably double that.

  7. If "organizations" like Black Lives Matter, the NAACP, NCLC, Urban League, and others with six-figure salaried "executive directors" and endless demands of others would actually roll up their sleeves and work on issues like disparate treatment and outcomes in courts, law enforcement policies and practices, and compensation for unjust imprisonment, there might actually be some progress made.
Instead all you get are marches, vigils, demands, shakedowns of corporations and various levels of government, selfies, panel discussions, town hall meetings, and always the same tired old excuses and blame.
So many people make very good livings by making believe the past has never changed you'd almost have to conclude that they don't want it to.

  8. So what's preventing that guy from hiring a lawyer and suing? I gotta think if the State isn't playing ball here, it's his only recourse. Maybe there's a state law that prevents these kinds of lawsuits?

  9. The truth here is that the State of Kansas asked LaMonte to testify before a committee exploring the compensation question. The next step is that the committee my propose a bill to mandate compensation to the wrongly convicted. If that bill is passed and it becomes a law then LaMonte will get his several million dollars of compensation. It's a process, give it a chance as I understand many legislators are on his side in this matter. He seems like a pretty likable guy.
