UMKC's Move To Travel-Heavy Conference Strains Athletics Department Budget

Kansas men's basketball team will be just down the road from home this week for the Big 12 conference in Kansas City. Mizzou only has to go to St. Louis. UMKC, on the other hand, has to travel more than 1,300 miles to Las Vegas for the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) tournament.

  1. Everything at UMKC is a huge drain on the taxpayers. The only skills they learn at that shitty school are whining and mooching off other people.

  2. It would be helpful if they got a real AD instead of a woman.

  3. UMKC just needs to get back in the Summit League. Affordable bus travel rather than expensive air travel will get them back under budget. They bit the bullet this year with transfers that had to sit out a year and will be eligible next fall. There have been rumors of a return to the Summit as early as this year. Hopefully it happens sooner rather than later.

  5. It costs more than $4000 to enroll in 12 undergraduate credits at UMKC, which is more than 3 times what it costs to enroll in the same number of credits at a local community college. Some of this added cost is to fund intercollegiate athletics, which is a big money loser for UMKC. At least they don't burn more funds on a football team.

  6. 10:31 - Why would you compare UMKC tuition with MCC? The U in UMKC stands or UNIVERSITY. There is a medical school, and law school, a pharmacy school, the Bloch school of business and one of the better music conservatories in the country. The people of Kansas City and the rest of Missouri need to realize what a valuable asset UMKC is to this area.

  7. Does anybody watch UMKC basketball? UMKC is not an asset to our community. It's a big nothing burger where some of the schools make a difference (Nursing, Pharmacy, Conservatory) and others just churn students through (ka-ching) such as the School of Education. School of Ed is the biggest waste of space on campus. Just ask folks who graduated from there what they really think about their education.

Oh, and the B-Ball team can just ask the alumni to pass the hat at the next meeting. Should be able to scrape up enough to fly the little darlings anywhere they want to go.

  8. You guys saying just go to the MIAA are forgetting UMKC doesn't have football, which is a requirement. They would be better off in the Valley.
