A Wyandotte County grand jury indicted Schlitterbahn Water Park of Kansas City, Kansas, and former director of operations Tyler Miles with involuntary manslaughter in the death of Caleb Schwab.

KCTV5: Schlitterbahn, which is based in Texas, said in a statement Friday that it was "deeply disappointed to learn any individual is being personally charged for the terrible accident on Verruckt."Our review of the facts and circumstances of the accident has never shown any evidence of criminal conduct on the part of anyone."
KSHB: GRAND JURY - Verruckt death was forseeable
Chicago Tribune: She said Schlitterbahn stood by Miles, who left the company for another job in September.
Fox News: Tyler Austin Miles, 29, a former operations director of Schlitterbahn Waterparks and Resorts, pleaded not guilty Friday during a brief court appearance.
Metro UK: Water park boss charged after boy, 10, decapitated while riding world’s tallest slide
LJ World: His attorneys asked that his bond be reduced to $15,000 from $50,000 but that request was denied. A trial was scheduled for Sept. 10
CJ Online: The waterslide has been closed since Caleb’s death. Schlitterbahn has said it will dismantle the ride when the investigation into the boy’s death is complete.
You decide . . .
The grand jury showing their teeth. This will work to keep amusement parks safer in Kansas hopefully.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I wish they would appropriate more regulation and mandate inspections.
Now THAT is a mugshot.
Delete"Comeuppance" sounds more like gloating. That is not appropriate.
DeletePray for the family and hope this helps them find closure and peace. This was an awful tragedy for them and for Kansas.
Better title:
ReplyDeleteCareer trac chopped off!
Why doesn't The Star article mention the decapitation? All the other news agencies do?
DeleteOnly senior citizens read the star. And then get pissed about it.
DeleteSo they're charging a 29 old executive who was 27 at the time of the accident? Does anybody think he really had any say over how the slide was run?
ReplyDeleteWhy don't they charge the UG officials who demanded the "safety wires" and polls that led to the accident?
I'd love to see that!!
DeleteHey, I read this in The Star a couple of hours ago! This is no fair, you are late to the game!
ReplyDelete^^^ Most people don't sit around watching their 1998 desktop all day.
ReplyDeleteI like the round-up. Don't be such a shut-in crybaby.
Obama's fault.
ReplyDelete^^^ Lulz.
ReplyDeleteShocking to learn that an individual is being personally charged for the terrible accident on Verruckt. This is a witch hunt being carrying out by loser politicians in Kansas.
ReplyDeleteA kid gets his head chopped off.....someone needs to go to jail.
DeleteWasn't the father of the young persona killed a politician. This doesn’t happen if not. Why ruin this guys life too? I’m sure he never intended for this to happen. The burden of proof needs to be very high on this.
ReplyDeleteCaleb's dad is Kansas state Rep. Scott Schwab.
ReplyDelete"In response to Caleb's death and the realization that few regulations governed amusement park safety, the Kansas Legislature took up a bill that would require more oversight of water parks and tougher penalties for safety violations.
New provisions — daily inspections and daily fines for each day a violation exists — were meant to replace lax oversight that existed at the time Caleb died. Scott Schwab, often a critic of burdensome regulation, supported the measure along with his House colleagues."
^^^ Analogous to Lynn Jenkins going out of her way to keep Syed Jamal being deported.
ReplyDeleteStay focused asshole!
ReplyDeleteUnified government also needs to be held accountable.
ReplyDeleteThey are the ones who tinkered with the ride's design.
When opened in 2014 the age requirement was 14 to ride. It was changed to 10 later. I had a friend who worked on this slide, she said it was constantly getting shut down for repair/maintenance , and that the scales would mess up all the time.
ReplyDeleteLowest man on the totem poll gets publicly humiliated. If he's arrested then the architect and the company that installed the pole and safety net should also be held accountable since that is literally what killed Caled.
ReplyDeleteYes, jail for them too. They'll have a great time at the Wyandotte County Jail lol.
DeleteHere is the indictment from WyCo Court website if anybody wants to read it, it's very telling and should be a warning to all amusement park company rides in Kansas.
ReplyDeletehttps://www.wycocourtks.org/uploads/4/4/1/2/4412070/2018-03-21_indictment__miles_swkc__filed_redacted.pdf
^^^ Thank you! Most of the news stations aren't posting that or don't have a decent viewable copy on their website.
ReplyDeleteRide should have never been open in the first place.
ReplyDelete^^^ Agree, it was a death trap and everybody said so.
ReplyDeletethanks to TKC for coverage that may contribute to justice eventually.
ReplyDeleteHow much did the family get?
ReplyDelete^^^ There was a cap on the settlement but the company paid them 20 million anyway.
ReplyDeleteI'd rather have my kid than 20 million. Now, 30 million?
DeleteOK, so now an “accident” that kills or injures someone is now grounds for being criminally charged with “aggravated battery”
ReplyDeleteNot an accident. A death caused by gross negligence and poor decisions.
DeleteFor all those who are saying the man doesn't deserve the indcitment.
ReplyDeletehere's a look at part of the reason why he is facing these charges:
Whistle-blowers from within Schlitterbahn told investigators that water park officials covered up similar incidents in the past, according to the indictment. Experts found physical evidence indicating that, in the past, other rafts had gone airborne and collided with the overhead hoops and netting.
A lot of people and the some news station showed the blood stain that was visible for miles and from the highway. This was a horrible incident. Hope there is justice for the family.
ReplyDeleteUnless they publish pics. of the kid with his head lopped off it didn't happen. More likely only a severely severed neck and the jugular was hit. The word decapitation is like the word maimed it just makes a more sensational headline.
ReplyDelete@5:48 - You need to stop doing damage control.
ReplyDeleteThe autopsy reported that Caleb was decapitated. Your constant lying doesn't make it true and lessens the damage that was done to the family. Shame on you!
He probably works for the company.
DeleteThat guy is *29*??? He looks about 43. Maybe that's what guilt does to you. Can you say scapegoat? And the co. is declaring no fault -- are they insane?!
ReplyDeletePLEASE KEEP 2 THINGS IN MIND AS THIS UNFOLDS
ReplyDelete1) Newly elected Wyandotte County Prosecuting Attorney Mark Dupree is eager to make some sensational headlines.
2) Remember that on the day of the horrific accident, the amusement park was hosting local/state politicos as a political favor. Free admission, food, etc. The boy who lost his life was the son of a KS State Representative.
If you're going to bite the hand that feeds you, don't take advantage of freebies.
ReplyDeleteRode it back in the day --sensational! But, they pretty much had to close it down.
The prosecution of this case looks political and that doesn't help the family or the safety of Kansans.
ReplyDeleteThoughts and prayers.
ReplyDeletereally feels like some major scapegoating going on here. You're telling me an "executive" that was 27 at the time is responsible for the decisions of a multinational global corporation? Very awful public shaming.
ReplyDeleteAll about taking other people’s money
ReplyDeleteI look forward to finding out how a 27 year old was vested with such decision making authority that he could be found guilty of criminal negligence. Maybe he was told to do X but he did Y and that led directly to the kid's death. But otherwise, it likely is scapegoating. If there is criminality involved, it is one of the higher ups, or perhaps a do nothing state agency.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts too, 7:23. The child’s death was horrible, but I can’t imagine this 20-something fellow acted with any sort of malice or criminal intent.
DeleteThe members of the grand jury should be ashamed of themselves.
ReplyDeleteThe Henry Family of Texas, the owners of Schlitterbahn, and one of whom rushed the design and construction of Verruckt to make the airing of a Travel Channel documentary, have been heavy donors to the GOP for many years.
ReplyDeleteThat should go a long way to explaining why the only indictment has been against a local Manager.
+100 on the comment fron DeBergerac. Absolutely correct and a shame that's how this case is going down. Seems like a real missed opportunity for creating safer entertainment options for everyone.
Deletewhat about the women riding the sled with him? shouldn't they be charged too since they were directly part of the ride?
ReplyDeletei find it amazing that there is no mention of the KCK employees that are building and code inspectors that were responsible for signing off on the official building permit that it met all the national codes before it ever opened.
ReplyDeleteThe people behind poor Caleb were sprayed with blood!!! You could see it from outer space!!!
ReplyDeleteIf you bother to you know read..I know it hard for some people... There is actual video of this child getting decapitated.
ReplyDeleteThis ride was designed by someone that dropped out of high school and with no engineering qualifications.
Read the indictment and then make stupid statements.
Should being going after the state , county , city code enforcement dickheads who signed off on the approval of this deathtrap ! The punk charged for this probably could have not found a parking lot at the shit park !
ReplyDeleteShouldn't be going to prison with a haircut like that.
ReplyDeleteSo,, let me get this straight,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
ReplyDeletethe Designers, Architects & Engineers aren't at all responsible for designing this thing with such a STEEP slope / fall as to cause the rafts to become airborne ????
That'd be like holding the person responsible who organized the JULY 1981, Square Dance at the , Hyatt Regency Skywalk collapse here in Kansas city, Missouri, for those who were around and old enough to remember .
Or another way of looking at it, the pilots of the SPACE SHUTTLE Challenger are responsible for the way the tiles were manufactured back during the 1985 space shuttle disaster, for those old enough to remember that.
I wanna know why the Architects & Designers , Engineers aren't being held liable ?????????????????????????
Nothing says success like a high school drop out running your design engineering.
ReplyDeleteRead this story from Fox4.
ReplyDeleteMany details revealed.
Of course a reporter there went to high school in Great Bend with Scott Schwab. Good for the station to break convention and do a LONG detailed news story!!
http://fox4kc.com/2018/03/23/court-documents-detail-allegations-of-negligence-in-design-of-schlitterbahn-water-slide-that-killed-10-year-old/
But yes I agree with so many other commenters in our community--the grand jury jumped the shark by not ALSO indicting the Gang of Five, the Design Review Committee at UG.
They mandated the untested hoop and net guillotine system. Which Jeff Henry, the high school dropout loser son of the Henry family, owners of Schlitterbahn, then conveniently ignored for awhile.
as detailed in the Fox4 story.
Wyandotte County designed the guillotine, then Henry family and crooked employees covered up the problems it caused. UG police refuse to report on it, because they are funded by UG. Coverup!! And yes, a county CAN be sued. And should have been. But who was on the grand jury? All taxpayers of Wyandotte County!
What about ALL the LOCAL TV News Stations, Anchors & reporters who were all too Anxious to promote this thing on their TV Stations here in Kansas City ?????
ReplyDeleteI remember their TV Commercials that they were PAID lots of Money to promote this SLIDE, shouldn't they too be held liable & responsible and some News Anchors & Reporters be going to Prison for Promoting this death Trap for PROFIT ????????????????????
The same TV News Anchors & Reporters who are sooo EAGER and Anxious to promote anything & everything that KCMO Mayor SLY JAMES does that turns out to be a Disaster for the citizens of this city , on both sides of the state line, those news anchors & reporters !!!
The same Clueless Brainless KC News Anchors & Reporters ( those who migrated here to KC from other areas of the country) who promoted that SLY JAMES Phony TOY TRAIN that's turned out to be a DISASTER !!
That toy train that the VOTERS voited NO for and that Corrupt KCMO Mayor SLY JAMES went ahead with anyway - - why isn't the News Media Anchors & reporters all over that why the Mayor constantly goes against the VOTES of the voters ?????
MONEY - MONEY - MONEY and LIES = TV Stations in this city !!!!!
Just how big of a jail do you want to build, Crazy Clown?!!!
ReplyDeleteBack in bed old woman
Delete^^^^^^As big as it takes you stupid twit!
ReplyDeleteKansas now has the world's most famous illegal alien and scapegoat, what's next?
ReplyDeleteEvery see safety netting on any other "amusment" ride ?
ReplyDelete
