Here's a bit of historical perspective on local youngsters signing up as social justice warriors . . .
The Children's Crusade was a disastrous popular campaign by European Christians to regain the Holy Land from the Muslims, said to have taken place in 1212. The crusaders left areas of Northern France and Germany with an intention to peacefully convert Muslims in the Holy Land to Christianity. Bands of children marched to Italy and were subsequently sold into slavery while many youngsters were tricked by merchants and sailed over to what they thought were the holy lands but actually turned out to be slave markets.
This horrific episode in Western Culture offers a teachable moment that might apply to more recent rhetorical ploys working to limit Constitutional rights by invoking the slaughter of the innocent and the lofty, yet impractical high ideals of students from a "provisionally accredited" district.

Debating the merits of anti-gun rhetoric is a fun pastime but the real-life record of these politicos when it comes to reducing local violence is nothing less than abysmal.
Brief aside . . .
Mayor Sly also jumped in front of the "Fight For $15" movement during an election year but then voted against a wage increase not too long after. And so his promises to mass movements are not only suspect but also unreliable.
As for Council Dude Taylor, during his tenure in the 6th District the rate of violence on the streets of the Southland have spiked dramatically but he's mostly silent on the tragic topic and far more interested in eco-devo work like most of the council.
Nevertheless . . .
City Hall has pushed anti-gun legislation only to have it quickly shot down by the GOP super majority.
Some critics of this ongoing gun rights blame game might suggest that the effort to disarm the citizenry is a strategy that has been proven ineffective in reducing violence given the rising number of murders over the past two years.
Nevertheless . . .
Increasing deadly violence amidst KCMO anti-gun efforts and advocacy remains an inconvenient fact that most students will never learn as they're led to the slaughter by ambitious politicos who have focused far more energy on a greedy development agenda than safety on local streets.

The kid who shot up the Florida school hit his mother so hard he knocked her teeth out, the police and the school knew about it. So if you want to blame anyone for that tragedy, blame the public schools, and the police in that area, parents and ignorant mayors like Sly James, who's son is on that same path and his daughter is a habitual liar!
Sly James has caused the rise in violence in Kansas City and that is exactly his intentions. This man "if you can call him that" is a cancer to society, unfortunately no one clean with any smarts will come in and run a city like ours. Also, another lame attempt by Tony to sound smart without actually saying anything of substance. Kids being led to the slaughter? Political props? These kids are doing this on their own. Sure, this is an act of civil disobedience that comes with consequences but the entire point of protest and civil disobedience is that you interrupt people's day to day lives to make a statement.
Protest comes with consequences and the students chose to live with the consequences of their actions whether that be detention or truancy. Kids aren't being led to the slaughter. They are leading by example.

Yesterday Kathy Quinn got a quote from a mom who said she told her daughter to do the walkout. This mom admitted her daughter didn't even want to be at her school Wednesday following FB threats of violence. Another mom said she "supported" her kids doing their high school and middle-school walkouts. With their "support" signs in hand, all jacked and smiley, they rushed right back to their "wonder years" and "glory days"!

ReplyDeleteThe Mayor is particularly prickly when it comes to the homicide rate because he's primarily focused on offering tax incentives to corporations to relocate into downtown Kansas City with the ultimate goal of gentrifying the urban core. He doesn't actually want to distract himself by dedicating his valuable time or resources to do anything to reduce homicide, so he's created a cozy little position for himself whereby he simply blames guns and/or everyone who doesn't blame guns for all the violence; this way he can simply pass the buck any time anyone asks him what he is doing to address violent crime in KC.
