TKC FACT CHECK!!! ACTUALLY, RACIAL DISCRIMINATION LAWSUITS AGAINST KCFD COST MORE THAN ONE MILLION DOLLARS!!!

Our blog community recently highlighted a series of lawsuits against the KCFD that cost more than $200K . . . In reality, the price-tag was much higher.

The most recent case noted by local media involved a pattern of discrimination and dearth of leadership roles for African-American firefighters.

"A worker employed by the Kansas City Fire Department for 17 years and had been eligible for captain for 12 of those years. He took the captain’s test five times and scored high on objective testing. But the suit said he was marked down in oral sections that involve responding to questions in front of a video camera “because he is African-American . . . 13.5 percent of the department’s 1,356 employees are African-American, while the city’s population is about 30 percent African-American. They also are underrepresented in leadership roles . . Only 7.5 percent of the 199 captains are African-American.”

And so . . .

FACTORING IN FEES AND DAMAGES: THE RECENT DISCRIMINATION PRICE TAG FOR KCFD TOTALS MORE THAN ONE MILLION BUCKS!!!

This bad news comes at a time when City Hall is at odds with police over cash for more dispatchers and politicos are angry about the significant portion of the budget dedicated to public safety.

While reasonable people can agree to disagree on any number of legal verdicts, there's no denying that the cost alleged KCFD institutional racism continues to climb and impacts that entire city budget.

  1. We always talk about tech for fast food workers but now it might be the FD's turn.

    KC actually needs more EMTs.

FD was smart to see this coming but obviously the change in the department is happening fast enough. Lots of good firefighters working in KC but it's still the whitest department in all of KCMO.

  6. Part of being a Captain is the ability to give orders. Makes no matter what color you are if the people under your command don't or can't understand your commands you're are not an effective officer. I knew a fireman who was probably the smartest man in Kansas City and was made Chief of one of the top 5 departments in Kansas City. He probably came the closest to knowing everything there is to know about firefighting and that was why he was made Chief. But sadly he was about the worst fireground officer I ever was around. Was a wonderful guy to know and talk with but he wasn't one of those that could be a leader. A part of the oral sections is to see how person talks and relates to sentences or what if's. Stephen Hawking would pass all the written tests with flying colors but would not be able to pass the oral part of a firefighters exam.

  15. And it's the Peter Principle is why some never are promoted higher than where they currently are positioned. But try telling that to an idiot who thinks just because they are there longer they should be moved up over a more desirable candidate.
