STAND UP KC CELEBRATES FIVE YEARS OF FIGHT FOR $15-AN-HOUR MINIMUM WAGE!!!

This week Kansas City activists celebrate a milestone and a dream of higher wages not yet realized.

There's no denying that Stand Up KC has made an impact on the local discourse despite mostly stagnant wages on the lower end of the pay scale.

Voters and City Hall have moved to raise wages locally despite preexisting prohibitions by Missouri State law which have consistently undermined the effort. Nevertheless, companies like Walmart, Target and many fast food outlets have raised their wages without legislative requirement - These increases wouldn't have happened without outcry from Stand Up KC and their allies across the nation.

The "Fight For $15" movement has been met with harsh criticism by skeptics who cite increased automation and the negative impact of mandated higher wages on small biz . . . Nevertheless, the mobilization of the working poor into the political fray offers an important perspective as income disparity become a growing American dilemma.

And so, the struggle of these activists continues with an upcoming party that cleverly asks for $15 advance tickets . . .

5 Years and Rising: A Celebration of Stand Up KC

Join low wage workers, The Grisly Hand, Fred Wickham Music & the Hadacol Caravan and The Country Duo as we mark a historic milestone: Stand Up KC’s fifth year of building the Fight for $15 and a union movement in KC.

We honor the history we made - together. We celebrate overcoming racial divisions as workers; the powerful organization we built and the key role we played in building a new national movement. We honor our sacrifice, strikes, marches, and the 100s of KC workers and allies who’ve carried on the tradition of non-violent civil disobedience in the fight for freedom. We honor historic minimum wage increases KC workers made possible. We exalt our efforts to advance the nation’s great social movements and weave them into a new American identity, an identity of working people - black, brown and white, native and foreign born, LGBTQ and straight, and men and women. We are one nation and one people who know we don’t go anywhere unless we go together!

Ironically, there's word that Mayor Sly James is slated to speak at this event despite the fact that he sold out these workers when they needed his help the most.

  1. And just think. Many of these protesters could have used the time to get more training or even a community college degree and qualified for a better job with higher pay.

    1. Over the past 5 years the advancements in kiosks and mobile app orders have really taken off. That might be their biggest contribution.

    2. Stand up KC gets a lot of hate and some of it they bring on themselves but I can't fault them for trying to get ahead. Even the president at one point admitted that people can't make it on 7 buck an hour wages. A lot of the opposition doesn't think about the economic aspect of this, more money for these workers is more money right back into the economy. Missouri just raised the wage to 7.70 and in Kansas it's still 7.25. that's a long way away from 15. Can only hope a statewide vote for 10 will soon be a reality.

  5. If they worked as hard at getting a decent job instead of keeping a crappy job for $8 per hour they would be making $40,000 a year now and for the last 4 years.
    Work smarter.

    1. The Great White Hope, Donald J. Trump, cannot force businesses from outsourcing... He can only discourage it. It's up to Americans to make America great again. How are you helping?

  10. If there is an increase in employment and an increase in wages, I got some ba news for all you Trump haters.

It's the "Trump Economy" that is now bringing up wages and employing more people.

    1. yep and the 93,000 people who have had their jobs outsourced since he became president might disagree. Oh and don’t forget the 40,000 US tourism jobs lost since he became President. 600 people at the Harley plant might call you liar though. Oh, don’t forget that Carrier plant he promised to save, 200 more there might say you have no fucking idea what you’re talking about. Oh, and the steel industry, didn’t he promise to protect that? Lie! Chinese steel dumped into the country and thousands more out of work. Yay! Oh and coal, coal is coming back baby!....whoops another lie. Why are they closing the mines? THAT’S the Trump economy. You are an idiot chuck.

    2. You forgot about Wal-Mart’s layoffs too. They announced mass layoffs the same day they gave their broke-ass employees a $1000 bonus. Why did they do that chuck? America! We are so winning!!??

  11. How is this a celebration? More like a failure if it's taking them more than half a decade to fight for $15 an hour.

  12. I'm not celebrating nothing. I'm just buying more robots to sell my cheeseburgers to crossroads dickheads at $17-a-piece.

  15. Everybody knows our minimum wage workers are not worth $15 per hour. Most of them have brains dulled by marijuana, TV and video games and have little or no ambition.

  17. My 401 just had a record year sure as fuck didn't ever happen with that shit stain Obama in office.

HD closing due to a changing market. Not Trumps fault nobody is buying a Harley.

Toys R Us is closing due to over pricing of crappy toys.

Businesses start up and shut down all the time. It's just how things are and no President can control people's spending habits.

Look at how many small businesses open and fold here in Kansas City every month.

When F.A.O. Schwarz one of the world's most famous toy stores closed their doors back in 2015 under Obama's watch I don't remember reading a word one from anyone that it was all Obama's fault.

So you anti Trump haters just need to shut the fuck up or spend your energy on seeing that Hillary/Obama and those just like them are wearing orange in a very short time for many years to come.

  18. ^^^ Sounds like you're huffin paint in the trailer again. Keep dreaming about that pension after your company went bankrupt. It ain't coming back. That red hat you bought for 50 bucks, it's made in China.

    Don't trust anybody. Save yourself.

  19. What a shame! In five years these dregs could have gotten off thier lazy asses and acquired a degree or completed vocational training leading to jobs that pay over $15.00 per hour. Instead they flop around on they whiny fat asses playing victims. This is what you get with years of libtard influence.
