SOCIAL WORK HELPS KCPD FIGHT CRIME???

An important effort highlighted by the new administration of KCPD Chief Smith in his latest blog post.

The impact of a social worker partnering with police

Premise and deets . . .

KCPD took a leadership role in embedding a social worker in one of our inner-city patrol divisions. It’s a unique partnership, and it’s changing people’s lives in a way that enhances public safety. She started in December 2016, and after a year on the job, the impact social worker Gina English is making continues to amaze me.

Lately, she’s taken it upon herself to volunteer and mentor youth incarcerated at the Juvenile Justice Center (JJC). She’s been working to let the young inmates there know that there is support available for them when they get out to do something different with their lives. Since she is working on behalf of KCPD, she’s also planting the seeds of positive relationships between these young people and law enforcement.

Like it or not, the voting public has a right to weigh in on KCPD tactics . . . Especially given a near record breaking year for murders in 2017.

And so . . .

DO YOU THINK SOCIAL WORK HELPS KCPD PREVENT RISING LOCAL CRIME???

Remember that these kind of interactions have a wide base of community support throughout the metro so a great deal of this effort is about answering demand from the public.

You decide . . .

Comments

  1. ABSOLUTELY a vital part of the equation.

They're doing the right thing in reaching out to young people because there are so many anti-police messages out there already.

It may not be the most important part of what police do to prevent crime but should be an element of the game plan.

  2. Like all other approaches, it works for some. It is not a "one size fits all" solution, and some people, even youngsters, need to be incarcerated for the safety of others. Every kid deserves a second chance, but not all of them will avail themselves of help.

  3. I bet it's a hot young chick. She's gonna get all the dick she wants.

  4. Come on, Tony--the 8:52 comment is rude, since it is directed at a Law Enforcement officer. We don't need these kinds of comments.

    1. And it wouldn't have been rude otherwise? Put away the pedestal. These guys and gals put their trousers on one leg at a time like the rest of us.

    2. Tony is the one who inserts the vulgar, N word comments, and other controversial things in order to instigate arguments and keep people in his site. He admits to low level journalism and this has been his tactic for years.

  5. Social programs have been around for ages and have done very little to solve problems, this is a just another waste of taxpayer money. Sounds like a scam position created to pay someone more money.

  6. When does the MeToo movement start to call out you, Tony?
    8:52's comment is defamatory.
If you want to make a difference in the community, which you are working to do, with posts highlighting some new policing efforts, then take down childish comments like 8:52's.

It's not censorship when it is pure leadership to MONITOR THE SITE.

We are fine with you monetizing via bikini pics, at least most of us are.

But the line is crossed if you allow infantile trolls to hijack the conversation about law enforcement.

Some day, someone will figure out how to out all the anonymous trolls.

But meanwhile, do YOU need to be their victim? By letting them ruin every good post? Today is January 6th, in the church that is Epiphany. The day for New Beginnings. The 12th night--(you recall that term from Shakespeare?)

How about a New Beginning for TKC in 2018. Some judicious editing and pruning.

Just like the KCPD, tryins something NEW, with a social worker on the team. Which is a superlative idea. Social workers are trained differently from law enforcement. They observe the larger picture--about growth of individuals interacting in society, not just rigid compliance with the sets of rules.

    So I applaud the KCPD.

And when 8:52 is shown to the door for disrespect, I will applaud you, too, Tony! Here's to your promised New Beginning.

People like 8:52 are the kind of misfits and bad boys who might have benefitted from having a social worker when they were growing up.

  11. It might help some, maybe it reaches one person, who knows. What America really needs from black people is to be fucking parents! Parents as in plural, as in TWO people raising their child. And that doesn't mean crackhead mom and grandma that is only 14 years older than her daughter. It means mom and dad that are married, gainfully employed, educated, and behave within society norms. But I know that will never happen, black people are getting worse, not better.

  15. Tracy, I'm usually in agreement with you, but not this time. Yes, we remember the phrase "Twelfth Night" from Shakespeare, but you seem to have forgotten that Play's subtitle is "What You Will". Let trolls post "what they will", most of us just ignore us their rancid little spoutings anyway! The actions that you are asking Tony to perform ARE censorship, unfortunately, and while I have no problem with censorship. it is only acceptable to me if I get to be the Censor. Please consider whether or not you are giving the trolls too much power by becoming offended by what they say.

Now, back on topic, it does sound like the young lady is doing an excellent job, and should rightly be commended. I'm not sure how much impact her efforts will have, but I have no problem with trying this approach.

This involves enforcement of the laws against crimes that affect everyone, trash, excessive noise, public intoxication, curfew violations, etc. Enforcement of these laws seems to have a cumulative effect that gradually brings about a restoration of community pride and reduces the tolerance of misdeeds, leading to a reduction in crime. It seems simplistic, but it also seems to work.

There is a limited amount that the City or Police Department can do to reduce unemployment, prejudice, and economic injustices, but this is a step that can help restore pride, self respect and hope in the citizens themselves, and they can do a LOT to correct those problems.

I realize that I am opening myself up to the "trolls" in making these statements, but so what, I've never been one to allow a few pissants to spoil a picnic,

    Excellent comments, 11:17am.

Perhaps Tracy is looking out for Tony. After all, when I sued him, he had to hire an attorney, Lynne Bratcher, and pay $1000 fine, and apologize.

Now I guess we get to see if the KCPD has as much balls as a firefighter.

Will they stand up for Tony's allowing bullying and defamation against one of their own? Or are the cops just a bunch of pussies, who won't defend a teammate just trying to do her job.

There IS a difference in talking smack about women in general, and a specific officer of the court.

Yo, Tony--feeling rich and bulletproof regarding lawsuits and fines? Is it worth it? Feelin' strong in case you are pulled over for some minor traffic violation?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Hold on Mr. Wright (and Tracy too,) unless the word "imbedded" has changed meaning overnight, the young lady in question is NOT a Police Officer, and therefore is NOT an Officer of the Court!

And, regardless of your opinion, Tony is no more responsible for what is posted here than he is for your petty, snarky sneering or Ms. Thomas' thinly veiled threats of calling down the "Wrath of MeToo" upon his poor head!

Threats are CENSORSHIP, and shame on both of you!

  25. Thank you, 4:45.

I'm not surprised in the least about how many of the boys here came to your defense. This site is Lord of the Flies. Or as one commenter said last week, a Nazi Beer Hall.

Might I suggest or request an extraordinary action? You have the choice to clean it up. Go to that comment, and the site will allow you to delete it.

It was crude. It was not fair to the young woman featured in the story, by her name.

Too often, men say things that are embarrassing, and if they are called on it, they dismiss it as "only a joke". But the words are hurtful, and detrimental to this woman. She certainly cannot share the post with friends or family, unless the "joke" is deleted.

I am then willing to delete my comments.

This year is getting off on a rough start. In the past week, TKC commenters also made rude, crude comments about Esmie Tseng, a student. Her medical advisor said she should have been prosecuted as a youth, at age 16, and allowed to present a defense of temporary insanity. It was only LATER that Paul Morrison, the DA at the time, who was boffing his admin assistant on the office sofa, while trying to present an image of tough guy, admitted he later realized young Esmie had been the victim of bullying and major abuse by her Tiger Mom.

By way of example, when she received a 96% on a test at school, her mother made her stand, naked, in the corner of her room, to shame her. That is not proper parenting. It's abuse.
Had it been reported to Division of Family Services, it might have led to termination of parental rights.

And as further punishment for not being "perfect", the mother also threatened to sell Esmie's piano--when she was recognized in the state of Kansas as an exceptional musician.
That is cruel, unusual, unloving, Joan Crawford-messed up-- mentally imbalanced parenting. It produced a violent reaction.

So after she snapped, and murdered the cruel mother, Esmie served her time, 8 years and 4 months, and is trying to resume her life. But when her story appears on TKC, the trolls attacked her visciously. And ignorantly. They might call their comments "only a joke."

Not having read her story, not having read about the legal details of her case, and not realizing that but for Paul Morrison's own sad history, she would have not lost so many years of her life in prison.

The trolls of TKC were just making "jokes". That's what bullies always say. But words matter, 4:45.

Thank you for admitting what you did, from the comfort of your anonymity.

  27. Wow, according to TT, if ya claim WACKO, ya get a pass to WHACK people. So, Ted Turner's alcoholic dad viciously beat Ted during much of Ted's childhood. He was also berated by his dad for years, through college and into the successful mogul's adult years. Oprah was raped at 9 yrs. old by her 18 yr.old cousin. Then, soon after, she suffered molestations, repeatedly, by an uncle and also a family friend.
Ted didn't try to off his dad. Oprah didn't kill those rapey, incesty, molesty men. Hmmmmmm.
