KCPD CHIEF EXPLAINS NEW PARTNERSHIP: WILL SOCIAL WORKERS SAVE KANSAS CITY FROM MORE HOMICIDES?!?!

Just a few moments ago, KCPD Chief Rick Smith offered more explanation about social workers working with the KCPD in his latest blog post.

Take a look:

KCPD Chief: Social workers coming to all patrol divisions

Money line:

The Hall Family Foundation is providing $640,000, and the City of Kansas City is matching that with $470,000 to fund six social workers and a program coordinator for the next three years. The social workers’ primary function is to provide support and act as a resource for officers through community outreach, support and service referrals.

As I said in an earlier post, we are willing to forge nontraditional partnerships that work to decrease crime in our city. People who don’t have their basic needs met will always look for alternative means. The KCPD is striving to assist with those alternative means, as opposed to criminal means.

More importantly, here's what the collabo hopes to accomplish . . .

The goals of the social worker program are to:

1. Cultivate a shared mission for service providers to work together, decreasing gaps in services and strengthening each other’s ability to influence people who need help and act as a safeguard in times of crisis.

2. Provide prevention support for youth identified as mid-level risk due to past police contact, criminal activity or escalation in crime type.

3. Increase the public’s overall satisfaction with police by offering another level of customer service and problem-solving actions to the Police Department.

Read the post in its entirety.

Now that there's more explanation of the effort the question goes out to our blog community at large . . .

WILL THE KCPD & SOCIAL WORKER COLLABO WILL HELP PREVENT MORE KANSAS CITY CRIME???

You decide . . .

  1. Some might have a knee jerk reaction but I think the overall strategy is good. Even better than that Hall foundation is picking up a great deal of the tab.

I'm sure the Chief will have his critics but this seems a lot more effective than just using Twitter like the last Chief.

  3. Uh no. Putting violent hoodrats in jail, leaving them there, and sterilizing welfare queens will only cut down on the homicides. No feel good, social bullshit is going to do any good.

  4. Chief Smith knows there is only a certain number of perps that commit most if the mayhem in the area. By reaching out as societal issue is a start. We have tried this in the pass with grants from the government. Lets see if it can be maintained with the Halls Foundation assistance.

  5. The last thing any street cop needs is to be saddled with an onboard social worker. What a crock of shit.

  7. $ 1.1 million down the drain. How much do social workers make? Better see some results.

  8. I actually think it sounds positive. You can be sure unlike a pork initiative they will get someone capable involved, and keep their eye on what kind of results get achieved. Something has to be done, besides more of the same. Cultural change in that community, along with some additional help sound like ingredients to doing better.

Kansas City has 20 billionaires, perhaps a few of them could additionally support this initiative. About as big a threat to the positive futures of the city as anything on the radar, make a difference people.

  9. I just want to complain about this like you guys. I hate everything everybody does because .....I don't know, I just do.

  10. You don’t fix a violence problem with flowers. The only fix is to increase officers in high crime areas and monitor closely those with history of violence. We are so Under manned in the inter city we are lucky there are not more murders. More officers is the only fix

  13. Has anyone noticed how well sLIE worked with forte and how he’s no where to be found with smith? I have, this is obviously motivated by race, sLIE wanted another colored police chief and now that he has a white chief he’s not going to lift a finger to assist him

  15. Did we rid the city of black people?

Oh, what's that? We didn't, did we.

    Then it won't work.

  16. What happened to... Kansas City Together, Nova, CompStat, Electing a black mayor and having a black police chief....etc. They were all supposed to reduce crime through community relations and failed.

  17. Maybe if the Police had a new academy, new patrol stations, new police cars, new helicopter, shot-spoter, drones.....more toys. A renewal of the Etax.

Well, the taxpayer did their part..... now the Police must start doing theirs and quit with all the boondoggles.

  20. @2:53pm hits the nail on the head.
Just keep ADDING layers of organizations, program, and spending, but never demand any accountability or results and ELIMINATE those that are not performing.
Which would be pretty much all of them.
ad Hoc, NoVa, Shot Spotter, COMPSTAT, Mothers in Charge, Aim4Peace, COMBAT, and who knows what else.
Many tens of millions of dollars EVERY YEAR for decades.
Doesn't anyone have the guts to say "enough"?

  21. No one wants to do the hard, mean, nasty work it's going to take to get murder city cleaned up.

And homicides are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to crime here.

  22. Hypothetically ---White dude in crisis---cop shows up with black social worker---white guy draws down and bang bang he's dead---everybody says cop had no choice--life goes on

Black dude goes crazy---cop shows up with white social worker---black dude draws down--bang bang he's dead---now anybody wanna guess the reaction to that

I can think of a few.

Anyway, I don’t see a problem with 200-300 hood rats killing 200-300 other hood rats in 2018. Encourage that to continue and try to minimize any collateral damage. Keep it in the ghetto.

  27. Here's why this war is lost, and this whole conversation is wasted oxygen: "People who don’t have their basic needs met will always look for alternative means." We actually have someone in power who used this passive construction and its accepted message that people exist to have their needs "met." By whom, pray tell? If we've given up on the idea that people can, and should, meet their own basic needs, no amount of social workers or tough policing will fix it. Ever.

Yes, I read this from time to time when something happens, like Skippy pleading guilty, or the Cleveland "Indians" being a little bit less racist & knowing that that will not convince you people to be less racist.

Unlike you, I don't feel the need to be anonymous, because I don't care.

    Other people read & comment, but I'm a stalker & a troll.

  42. Typical gotcha. What happens in three years? Do we lay off the social workers because 60% of the funding disappears, or do we slide these 6 employees into another department, which will require 100% funding? You should never hire full-time employees who are paid by donation, unless you plan to continue raising the voluntary funding. Otherwise you're just sliding additional employees on the dole who will require funding later.
