KC Streetcar considers public-private partnerships for extensions - Kansas City Business Journal

Extensions of the Kansas City streetcar system could become candidates for public-private partnerships. On Thursday, the Kansas City Streetcar Authority and the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority issued a request for information to evaluate potential opportunities for its Main Street and Riverfront extensions.

  2. "We know there is international interest in Kansas City's streetcar expansion initiative and a number of innovative strategies emerging across the country that may make sense for Kansas City," Tom Gerend, KC Streetcar Authority Executive Director, said in the release.

This is a classic throw-away line. Interest, international or otherwise, is there only if there is money to be made. The streetcar is free. The TDD itself isn't large enough to throw off tax revenue in any material sense of the word so selling the residents of the TDD into servitude is probably a non-starter. You could offer up property tax revenues from within the TDD but my guess is that the other stakeholders in the taxing game won't play along. So... show me the money.

  3. Ten members of the Kansas City Misery city council should immediatley resign. Their intentional action to take away from the voters of KCMO the power to stop this bullshit of the streetcar.
Tom Gerend should be flushed down the toilet.

  4. 3:32 is 100% correct. The vote which enabled an extremely unfair TFF taxing district was a scam. It taxes residents six blocks on either side of Main Street. My property taxes will increase by $1,000 per year. This is incredibly unfair and should be overturned. There is no logical explanation for this unfair taxation.

  6. For the millions forecast for the streetcar extension we could purchase several thousand of those cute driver less vehicles. Forget the antiquated, let's be cool and go autonomous.

  7. We'll need a new tow truck fleet to tow the $300 million extension trains back and forth during rough weather conditions.

  8. Public/Private Financing is Okay with me, so long as EVERY DAMN CENT spent comes from the "Pivate" side (including all costs of ongoing maintenance),and 100% of the ownership belongs to the "Public"!

On that basis, and only on that basis, GO AHEAD!

  9. I would guarantee you this. If each City Council member had to pay $100 per year for the street car expansion not one of them would vote for it.
Here is an idea. Lets just tax downtown residents and workers for the Broadway Bridge repair. Lets see how the Council would vote for this.
