KANSAS CITY #TBT: DO YOU REMEMBER THE COATES HOUSE HOTEL FIRE?!?!?

This was before my time but I heard some horrific stories . . .

The worst tale of this tragedy remembers that it was a flop house blaze. The cold weather, fire and water left several poor souls frozen in eternal agony on window sills of the burned out building according to firefighters who were forced to help deal with charred, iced bodies in the horrific aftermath.

Here's an exceptionally informative account . . .

Forty years later, Coates fire remains Kansas City's deadliest

January 28 marks the 40th anniversary of the deadliest fire in Kansas City history. The 92-year-old Coates House Hotel at 10th Street and Broadway had been one of the city's finest establishments. Among its guests were Presidents Grover Cleveland, William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. The horrific blaze broke out around 4:10 a.m.

  2. i remember the Lawyers swarming over the place looking to sign survivors or relatives of the dead for lawsuits.

The same thing happened at the Hyatt disaster.

They all got filthy rich over it.

    The lawyers, that is.

  3. I remember getting up and listening to the scanner as this was taking place. Before I knew it all the station was sitting at the table drinking coffee knowing that our firefighting brothers were going through hell that morning and there was nothing we could do about it in anyway to help them. Sad, sad day it was.
