TKC SUNDAY SPECIAL!!! DOWNTOWN KANSAS CITY DEVELOPERS DEMAND 2018 COUNCIL REDISTRICTING!!!

Kansas City residents and business interests inside the loop are fighting for more political representation.

To wit . . .

DOWNTOWN/CROSSOROADS AND THE WESTSIDE NORTH LEADERS ARE NOW DEMANDING THEIR OWN COUNCIL DISTRICT THAT COULD UPSET THE BALANCE OF POWER THROUGHOUT KANSAS CITY!!!

Here's a look at some of the reasoning . . .

"The population influx is beyond the tipping point. Downtown now deserves a place at the table and someone who speaks to the amazing growth and development of the Downtown/Crossroads area. This is a unique time and one of the typical Brookside/Waldo or Ward Parkway candidates doesn't really understand the amazing opportunities available in the heart of KCMO. In the new maps that are being drawn, Downtown needs to be the focus the 4th District, we're now too big to be an afterthought."

And so, under that radar of most Kansas City media outlets . . . Downtown has more money, influence and business support to take over the redistricting process than any other neighborhood in KCMO.

More to the point . . .

ONCE AGAIN THE AT-LARGE COUNCIL DISTRICTS ARE UNDER ATTACK AS A LEGACY OF OLD SCHOOL KANSAS CITY SEGREGATION-ERA POLITICS!!!

And finally . . .

Remember that deceased political consultant Steve Glorioso helped redraw the current lines and without his influence and advocacy for minority communities . . . This time around the Council map could look radically different thanks to greater corporate influence than Kansas City has ever witnessed.

Developing . . .

Do not count out the Ward Parkway corridor.

They DO NOT want to be included in the 6th district and the feeling is more than mutual.

I would agree with the concerns of Downtown if they also support the much more equitable effort of eliminating the at-large districts entirely.

Downtown & Crossroads would get their own council member and the rest of the city would have more equitable representation.

We don't need more council districts, we just need better council candidates.

Waldo, Brookside and Ward Parkway should be one their own council districts. Only a matter of time until those people rip each other apart.

The downtown developers seem to be getting everything they want. How much more do they want to take from the city's taxpayers?

seems like a common-sense idea. do it.

Draw East-West District lines, then after each Census adjust them North-South as necessary to achieve the closest possible population equality.

Of course, this will create diversity in ALL districts, and will not assure any ethnicity of a "Guarantee" of a certain number of Council seats, but it may also result in the City FINALLY having as least some representation of our Latino population on the Council.

This should also increase true "representation" of all of the City's population on the Council, since any successful Candidate would have to respond to the concerns of all ethnic and social groups in these "diverse" Districts.

^^^^ suck it

A step towards breaking up a city that covers too many square miles to effectively service it's citizens.

Regardless of what is done, the amount of campaign money will determine who gets elected and the source of the money will determine if the residents of a councilmatic district or a single law firm or a single developer determine what will be done at city hall. The era of the idea that a person would represent the ideas and opinions of a certain geographical area ARE OVER FOREVER.

Yeah. They thought of this all on their own.

What? Having the yard ape mayor and half the city council in their own pocket isn’t enough for the downtown developers?

Anonymous said...

Forget about this stuff and focus on what’s important. We need 7 more murders to break the record.

I get the feeling that sLIE is trying to separate downtown from the rest of the city, this is the only area of the city he is fully 100% committed to. I believe he has given up on everybody else in town so a move that gives downtown more power over everyone else makes sense.

Amazing how no "leaders" or "developer" are actually quoted by name.

Amazing!

That must mean it's 100% true, right?

Think about it. This could be totally made up out of thin air.

And when I say "could be," I mean "is."

Probably one of the smartest things I've read about local KCMo politics.

THANK YOU for writing that, sums up things PERFECTLY!

The redistricting should take place before the next election. KC has experienced some amazing population shifts and it's time for our Council representation to reflect as much.

This is always a disaster, avoid it or it will destroy Kansas City.

We'll quit mentioning Tony's lack of credibility when he gets some.

Which will be never, "Wildman."

Just wanted to let you guys know that this story is based on a little fact. Councilmatic redistricting is on the agenda for 2018. Check the docket closely and it's there for anybody who bothers doing research which is not many KC reporters in 2017. More of a paper work thing.

Kansas City NEEDS to give up some of our square miles. The City is far too sprawled and just to big of an area to govern effectively. Give some of the Northland back and de-annex all of that empty woods out South. Back to basics in 2018.

How does that solve Tony's credibility problem, "Wildman?"

It doesn't does it?

Still a big issue. And you don't really have an answer, do you?

This is the WILD MAN said...

^^^ back for the 4th time today? That's just lonely, pathetic and sad. I don't really give a damn how you spend your Christmas eve but the more you keep coming back, the more you disprove your own arguement. Perosnally, I love rhetorically smacking around shit birds like you. Methinks you doth protest too much. If you didn't like this blog you wouldn't be on it all day contribute to Tony's page view count and participating in his forum. My answer to your "big" issue is that your continued patronage of TKC negates your criticism and is hypocritical. If you don't like it, don't read it. Nobody is forcing you.

Again, this seems very desperate to me because this thread was about council redistricting and it's consequences, I've seen TKC get way ahead of the newspaper and all of the TV stations when it comes to it comes to City Hall news like this. Redistricting is always a threat to Kansas City voters. That issue is more important than your neurosis and obsession 5:04. Deal with your own problems, don't make us do it for you.

We need a new mayor before we can do anything important. PERIOD.

Still no answer I see, 5:21.

None at all.

lol

Back again? @6:00? I think you just proved my point. I love the TKC blog. Funny as shit. See you bright an early tomorrow, when I'll smack you around again.
