TKC BREAKING NEWS!!! TWO LIGHT ANNOUNCES EARLY MOVE-IN DATE AS COUNCIL OPPOSITION MOUNTS AGAINST MORE TAX BREAKS FOR NEXT TWO CORDISH LUXURY APARTMENT PROJECTS!!!

Council is quickly taking sides over more tax subsidy for Downtown Kansas City Luxury living space.

Cordish recently announced updated move-in dates for Two-Light and at the outset of the project builders revealed the they wanted to to start Three-Light before construction was complete.

However, the Go-Bond vote and the airport election sidetracked tax breaks for local luxury life.

Accordingly . . .

AS KANSAS CITY ELECTION SEASON APPROACHES, COUNCIL IS HESITANT TO OFFER MORE FREEBIES FOR THREE & FOUR LIGHT LUXURY APARTMENTS!!!

Here's a hopeful but balanced view from a Kansas City Insider . . .

"They'll get their money but it won't be easy. They'll have to sneak it through and there are already a couple of NO votes waiting. What's fun about the new projects is that they'll clearly demonstrate that the TIF legislation authored by Councilman Lucas isn't worth the paper it's printed on . . . As usual, an accelerated ordinance will override most of the Council's good intentions and money for the new buildings will be easily approved."

To be fair, the Downtown hype machine seems to love these buildings despite a connection to Jared Kushner and Team Trump.

And while tax breaks for luxury living space might threaten advocates for schools & libraries . . . Overall, City Hall money aimed at serving the growing number of big money downtown denizens is something that most corporate donors, lawyers and consultants celebrate given that KCMO has the best Democracy that money can buy.

  1. Just like the hotel. If it's such a great investment, why does the city need to pay for it?

We should be busy fixing our roads, putting in more street lights and repairing broken pipes. These kind of projects take away with that. It's a shame that voters don't hold the council accountable for their votes for schemes like this one.

  2. Because if we don't give them tax breaks some other city will. I don't like it either.

  3. ^^^ Truth.

Hand over your wallet KC. Developers own you.

  4. I don't care. I understand how business is done in America. You don't. Tell me, do you support the GOP tax plan? If you do, then you best not bitch about this. If you don't, guess what?...that's how America works now. Get used to it or get the fuck out!

  5. 'builders revealed the they wanted to to start Three-Light'

    Whats that mean?

  6. 7:07 This is not how business has been done in America. It's how business is done in those economic powerhouse countries of Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Russia and dozens of other poor nations.

    Get over that KC.
    Time to move out.

  9. So let's follow the "logic" here:
Cordish wants to build more apartments because the downtown KCMO market is so strong and the demand is high.
And they are demanding rates that younger people, who supposedly is what the downtown "renaissance" is all about, are priced out of the market.
But even with high demand (claims of waiting lists and all the rest), they can't "make the numbers work" unless there continue to be taxpayer subsidies.
    Forever.
And if Cordish doesn't get the city to cooperate, they'll build apartments meant to meet customer demand in KC in another city?
    Shakedown plain and simple.
That's what happens when city government becomes an amateur developer instead of focusing on its actual responsibilities.
Guess what happens when these "investments" can't meet their bond payments.
The P&L District is exhibit A.

  10. @7:25AM you must not run a business in this country, because this is EXACTLY how business is done in America.

  11. 7:59 Most business in America is still operates without bribing politicians for subsidies like continually happens in KCMO. Even in the marketplace where there are business subsidies at least they are available to all regardless of campaign contributions.

When a business produces a product that the marketplace does not value high enough to pay for then we all lose when the taxpayer makes up the difference.

In case you haven't noticed the rich now rule this country. You used to be a coal miner, you use to be a steel worker, you used to be a textile worker? Too bad. You have to retrain for the new reality. The rich are going to want more butlers, maids, gardeners, cooks & nannies. They would prefer to exploit undocumented immigrants, but they sacrificed that want to appease their base of unemployed, & underemployed workers who think working a shit job making someone else wealthy is the meaning of life.

Of course, as in all things, you must ask, "What would Jesus do?"

He would minister to the old, the lame, & the poor. If you want to find real Christians they're not in a fancy mega-church, they're at the homeless shelters & food pantries. We're going to need a lot of these.

  14. Has the $700,000,000 collected on the infrastructure sales tax (1% up for renewal in April) over the last ten years been used to pay for failed TIF projects? It certainly hasn't been used for infrastructure! Where' s the outrage?

  15. No problem. Sly and his developer-owned protege Jolie will see that the new apartments get all the tax dollars they need to be a future blight and thus, eligible for even more tax dollars.

  17. These schemes mostly benefit Republican developers but are touted by all the local Democrat politicians who get the bribes. Truly non-partisan city.

  18. i don't like it but we should do everything necessary to assure the success of downtown's revitalization.

it's an all-or-nothing, big, risky bet and we need to make sure it gets to the critical mass that it make it sustainable.

so i favor tax breaks for now.

  19. Good luck to the council. All of the apartment buildings through Five Light are in the origional agreement.

  20. Why is it with all of the outrage about the new tax plan benefiting the rich and the Democratic Party being the party of the Poor Man and who wants to yell Eat the Rich can even contemplate building such a waste of money, it only benefits the rich how many Section 8 apartments are there in these towers how many minority faces except for maybe the elevator operator or the people cleaning their toilets live in that building I can remember our mayor standing there fighting against our president and arguing about the sinfulness of the rich how in the hell can a democratic City Democratic Mayors Democratic Congressman Democratic senator even think these buildings are even necessary. Is it because they are the so-called liberal limousine super rich when things like this are built I sit and I wonder why all the blacks in this city back this buffoon or orangutan of a man he has zero in common with you black community he uses you for the punks and slaves you really are he's no more than an Uncle Tom and remember Democrats hate Uncle Tom's I guess except if it's your Uncle Tom

Your comments are exactly what was said about the Vista Hotel, which has changed hands numerous times and required ongoing taxpayer help, and the repeated expansions of Bartle Hall.
    Subsidies "for now" NEVER change.
It's always "for now" and always will be.
As for the renaissance of downtown, have you ever been at say 10th and Main at around 8:00pm on a beautiful fall Wednesday evening?
You could fire a cannon down the street and not harm a soul.
The taxpayers have been tricked into creating a publicly-subsidized amusement park which will never be financially self-supporting.
Don't spoil the fun by looking behind the curtain!
