TKC BREAKING NEWS!!! KANSAS CITY PARKING CRACKDOWN IN RIVER MARKET RAMPS UP IN 2018!!!

Local biz believes that new regs from City Hall are chasing away biz.

A recent holiday card sent to merchants has created more cause for concern.

Here's the word . . .

I got a postcard in the mail here addressed to Business Occupant. It reads as follows:

"Starting in mid January, paid parking meters will be installed in 5 City market lots. Parking and rates will be as follows:

M-F 7am-6pm $3 minimum for first 3 hours, $1 hour after

S-S 7am-6pm $1 minimum, $1 hour after

"The move is part of the City's ongoing goal to improve effectiveness of parking management and ensure that municipal parking resources are used in a manner that support public parking, public transit, multimodal transportation and River Market economic growth and development."

City Hall seems to think that trying to force people to ride the streetcar will help businesses grow and thrive. This will completely kill the City Market off, especially during the week. It has already become a dead zone since summer ended and they put the pay meters in on the streets. No one is going to pay $3 to shop or eat here. And the employees in the area are not going to pay $8 a day to park to go to work. They will find another job elsewhere where they do not have to pay to park.

  1. This one is simple: Mayor's office wants to create a luxury shopping district where one has never existed.

But if it was so great, then why did Populous already bail out.

Their chasing away new businesses every day and making life harder for people who have a stake in the place. Doesn't seem like a great plan for survival.

    1. Better title: The struggle for avocado toast gets real in the river market.

  2. Kind of a shame, we finally get a couple of decent places to eat there and the City wants to take parking away.
Oh, well - back to the search...

  3. Why don't they take one of those old buildings and instead of turning it into more lofts, create a four or five story city parking garage that can hold a couple of thousand cars? Then there could be a minimal charge (or free) with validation at a local vendor. Or there looks to be plenty of room down by the new Berkeley Park area - widen the 3rd street bridge to accommodate both car/train and pedestrian traffic.

Or we could just chase everyone away with outrageously expensive parking meters.....

Exactly my thoughts too 6:54. But I really don't think city hall or mayor james has the mentality to figure that one out.

Those are great ideas, but you've missed the key words in the "explanation" of the new parking rules.
Which are: PUBLIC TRANSIT and MULTI-MODAL.
The transit "activists" don't want cars involved in getting people around the metro, and certainly not downtown. They continue to dream the fantasy that downtown KCMO is a vibrant dense urban environment just like New York City and, if they can make it inconvenient enough, somehow that dream will be realized.
But as many commentators have pointed out before, downtown has all the inconvenience of an actual city without much of any of the benefits or attractions.
This will very much discourage people from patronizing River Market businesses and there are dozens of farmers' markets in the metro that the 85% of metro residents who don't live in KCMO can choose from.
Just the latest poor decision by the folks who are despeately trying to make KCMO something that it's not.
    Disneyland on the plains.

  6. How about taking the tax revenue from all the new luxury apartments and build some free parking garages like they have on the Plaza?

  7. Streetcar will need a new “park & ride” lot.

  8. What happened to the parking garage we TIF'd for one company that moved out shortly after they got our money?

  9. 7:54am - actually the City owns that parking structure. It sits virtually empty.

  10. 7:46, there's no tax revenue from the rental apartments. The City gives the developers tax free 15 year abatements and tenants don't pay taxes like condo or homeowners do. The taxpayers in Kansas City homes are paying for the streetcar developers projects.

  11. There needs to be some sort of permits issued to the businesses that are in the River Market area whose property taxes and CID assessment pay for the area. The businesses should be given a hang tag permit for each of their employees to be able to park for free. Let the downtown workers using the River Market as their park and ride lot pay $8 a day to park. That is what this is really about. Once the streetcar started running with free rides, the downtown workers gave up their paid parking spaces and moved their cars down to the River Market. Free parking, free ride to work.

  12. How about we change our diapers? That would be more effective than the shit espoused above. How about that? God, this thread reeks of geezer shit.

  13. So i guess all the big money from the suburbs won't be shopping in River Market anymore. They want to push public transportation and there is none from suburbs to downtown on weekends, and not to convenient on weekdays.Parking seems to be big business in city's. Either private lots that charge way too much, or the city puts meters all over. Maybe they should use some of the billion dollar tax increase for some free parking downtown.

  14. KC is a car town, any attempts at limiting car access will lead to failure of that area. The rest of us already have little reason to enter Jackson County this just adds to the list of reasons.

  15. I love going to the River Market on weekdays. I do it all the time for coffee and produce. Today is the last day I expect to go there.

KCMO is run by corrupt idiots.

  16. For year I have gone to the KC City Market besides all the stolen and shoplifted merchandise there are some neat trinkets and grabbing a snack while I'm there has been part of my day. I usually buy a pile of veggies and fruits for under $15.00. My total spend is usually about 20 - 25 bucks. Now here comes good old city hall trying to pick my pockets and somehow trying to sell the bullshit that their parking plan will nurture economic growth in the area. All this while reaching into the future to screw the tax payers to the tune of $130,000 to buy back sidewalks the city tax payers already owned In Westport. Apparently that was another plan to nurture economic growth amount the #1 places where folks score their drugs in this town and that is BARS. I'm done with KC. All future stops in the big carne town will be directly related to my need to take a leak. What the fuck are the folks at city hall smoking???

  17. I own a business in the River Market area and just found out about this. None of the business owners here were consulted about this, asked how making their customers start paying for parking would impact their revenue. There were no meetings held about this. I have been casually asking my customers this week if when they return they had to pay $3 minimum to park will they return? 100% of them told me no, they won't be back. I asked them about riding the streetcar for free to get here and 100% said no, they wouldn't do that either. 100% told me they will reluctantly take their business elsewhere. Which means very shortly I will be closing my doors and relocating to another part of the metro area that is not hostile to businesses whose customers drive cars.

  18. The new song EXCESSIVE PARKING FEE'S DESTROYED THE RIVER MARKET. MANY BUSINESSES ARE MOVING INTO THE CROSSROADS ..AND YOU KNOW FOR REVENUE THEY WILL PUT PARKING MEATERS,IN THE CROSSROADS. IT'S EXTORTION. .THE GOVERNMENT ARE THE LARGEST RACKETEERING RACKETI.THERE RED LIGHT CAMERAS ARE GONE THEY NEED MORE REVENUE. ...

  19. Note. .Talking about extortion Look at the KCMO WATER BILLS

  20. Another tax should be placed on the River Market residents to pay for the construction of new, free parking lots for the tourist. That is how the streetcar works.

  21. Troy Schulte still city manager? That needs to be fixed!!

  22. The KCMO reps of this parking initiative, Bruce Campbell and Claude Page, refuse to respond to emails or phone calls to discuss this matter. They made this edict behind closed doors without any input from the businesses and stakeholders in the area who will be impacted and harmed. KCMO is taking the results of a study done by out of town consultants telling them what works in Boston or Denver and believing it will work here. Because KCMO paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for the study they think it would be a waste of money if they didn't go along with the recommendations no matter how harmful they will be.
