TKC BREAKING AND EXCLUSIVE NEWS!!! KANSAS CITY INSIDER: WESTPORT WILL DIE WITHOUT PRIVATE STREETS!!!

The new Kansas City plan for street privatization is up for discussion today.

Our KICK-ASS blog community started the conversation on Monday with a FIRST LOOK at legislation and the push back from urban planners & activists.

Now public radio offers just a bit more insight that's worth a read:

KCUR: Desperate To Stop Gun Violence, Westport Pushes For Private Sidewalks

Money line:

"Westport has seen a major uptick in gun violence this year. According to stats collected by the Westport Regional Business League, there were 16 gun-related weapons offenses in the district in 2016. In 2017, there were 65 — and that's only through Oct. 31. A Missouri law that took effect in January allows people to carry guns without a permit in nearly every public space, so there’s not much business owners or police can do to keep guns out. A coalition of Westport business owners are behind a proposal to privatize the sidewalks in entertainment district. That would allow them to ban guns in the district and screen for them on busy weekend nights. The proposal has drawn criticism from members of the city council and from several community organizations, who fear screening for guns could put other civil liberties at risk. But Kim Kimbrough, director of the Westport Regional Business League, says they’re out of other ideas. "We really don't have a Plan B, there isn't one . . ."

Better still . . .

There's a political angle to this debate . . .

REMEMBER THAT NOT SO LONG AGO WESTPORT BIZ OWNERS RAGED AGAINST COUNCIL LADY JOLIE JUSTUS FOR BETRAYAL ON THE STREET PRIVATIZATION ISSUE!!!

Back then we noted that her flip-flip against biz owners set their cause back during a violent Autumn when help with security would have saved Midtown denizens a lot of heartache.

It gets worse, the predictions for Westport without this added security measure are dire . . .

KC Insider: "They don't want you to know this but a lot of places in Westport are already talking about packing it in. Some of them moving and some of them just working like a fortress in order to keep their customers safe. This is really the last stand for Westport. Without this, it's basically going the same way as Bannister Mall."

Just as TKC noted . . . The last straw was an off-duty cop killed in front of dozens of Westport party people. This horrific slaughter and so many more instances of violence served to influence public opinion far more that silly advocacy for hip-hop playlists.

And so, despite the protestations of activists, urban planners and politicos . . . Once again, another Kansas City entertainment district demonstrates that rampant development is useless if there's no security for patrons and residents.

Developing . . .

  1. At the rate we're going, Westport will be a nightmare in the Summer of 2018. Yeah, this is more than necessary. Should have had it already.

    1. Don't they close off the streets every weekend already? Why do they need to own the streets in order to do gun checks?

      Delete
    2. ^^^ Think it's a matter of paying for it, which they should. KC police shouldn't be private security for Westport, there are other places that need the protection.

This booze fest has already cost KC too much.

  2. Who is going to enforce the privatised sidewalks. It sure as hell won’t be the cops.

I refuse to take orders from Bill Nigro. This will actually kill Westport.

    NO THANKS!

  4. What exactly do you mean by going the way of Bannister Mall? Do you mean it will be ruined by the blacks?

    ReplyDelete
  5. ^^^ YOu don't really know bannister mall. There was never a shooting inside the mall. Not one.

It was the cheap and sleazy merchants who killed the mall.

    Same thing happening here.

They'll get what they deserve, place is already going condo. There's not much left to save.

    1. That cheap and sleazy merchants jab is only a bit part of the eventual total FUBAR at BM. There was escalated loitering, littering, pottymouthing, "teen" fighting, food court filthing, and wares boostin'...plus the nighttime, at first, giving way to anytime, purse snatches, carjacks, and vehicle break-ins that did it all in.

    2. I guess those guard towers they built in the parking lot were to keep an eye on the cheap and sleazy merchants? Dumbass.

  6. Stop and frisk would be the obvious solution.

But since that can't be done we might as well turn the place into an outdoor shopping center that shutters its doors at 8 pm.

    Blacks ruin everything they touch.

  7. OMG!!! This post and the typical responses that follow are hilarious!!! Are these the very same Kick-ass TKC insiders who have been wrong about EVERY SINGLE THING? You can't be serious!!!! Westport is dying...Westport is dying...the sky is falling...the sky is falling. Funny stuff.

I'm sorry here but how is making the streets private going to change anything? Till you deal with the element of thugs who hang around there no matter who owns the streets there will be issues.

    1. As of right now, you can't kick a person out of the public streets and sidewalks that run through westport unless you have a good reason. In addition, it's hard to control prohibited objects in a public setting as it stands now. Privatization will give police and security the means and justification to target blacks and other undesirables with EXTREME PREDJUDICE and will likely pull it out of the shithole. That is, until they scream discrimination (see P&L). Either way, the blacks will eventually get their way, so it may be better to just bulldoze it into a vacant lot.

^^The point of privatization is to bypass the State Legislatures radical interpretation of the Second Amendment. Guns for everyone, everywhere is having the results that critics always said it would have - more gun related violence.

    1. Sorry you can't bypass state law.
      More black related crime.

It's understandable that you and other young people feel that way. But many of us remember a time when this city was actually a decent place to live
So we are able to compare what kc once was to what it is today
Sadly many young people here only know the dying, decaying crime filled city of today and can't believe it has been anything else

  13. Turn the old Landing Shopping Center into Rapalazzo, giving the thugs a hang out of their own.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Well by all means Silvestor, if you feel unsafe here, take your candy-ass elsewhere pronto! You and people like you are such dopes it isn't even funny. This city is far from decaying. You're a born loser, so it's natural you would have that shitty attitude you have. I go to Westport all the time, the Plaza too, Brookside as well, the Northland, Waldo, Martini Corner, Zona Rosa. None of it is "decaying" It's you geezers who are decaying and you're deflecting and transferring that to the city you soon will be leaving. Rest assured, long after your rotting corpse goes to dust...this city will still be here and people will still love it. Go night-night now dummy. The light is fading.............

  15. I've been an Uber driver since this past summer and traffic has significantly dropped around Westport since then. Some of it is weather related (i.e. it's a lot more popular when it's warm outside) but I've heard more and more comments from riders about safety concerns. The random shootings outside the bars, the random shooting inside a bar, and probably the most frightening is the kid that was killed last week while being robbed just a couple blocks away. It doesn't matter if they privatize the streets. People will still have to park outside Westport and walk to the bars. If they have to risk being robbed and killed getting there, it doesn't matter if the have metal detectors before you get to the bars. I'm tired of dealing with the area and avoid it when I can.

  16. Just be there with a gun before 11:00

  20. the plaza's future is tied to that of westport.

if westport folds or goes low-grade, the plaza will likely follow or turn into a tourist attraction with no heart.

  25. One of the best things about learning the truth and learning to take your own side is that I read stories about black dysfunction now and couldn't care less. Before I got my head screwed on straight, I used to feel an emotional compulsion to pity blacks and their concerns. And their concerns are put front and foremost by the media, the universities, and the politicians who are always pandering about what they intend to do for the "black community". Blacks and the assorted dusky invaders don't give a damn about anyone but themselves. It's embarrassing when I look at how my sympathies were manipulated and misguided. It feels great to care about my group and have a sense of purpose instead of being a universalist fool.

  26. The NRA is watching this bullshit.

    ReplyDelete
  27. You guys understand this is important to us all? If we let Westport be ruined the black termites will just move on to somewhere else and eventually that somewhere else will be something you do care about. The Plaza, Waldo, Oak Park Mall, or Prairie Fire. If NYC can be cleaned up so can KC. Problem is we need a strong mayor that isn't afraid to be called racist by the East side gritters or hurt black peoples feelings. You know we can't all just keep moving further out. Are we supposed to live in Pleasanton, Ks and Marshall, Mo? There is no reason in the world for the law-abiding 95% to bow to the worthless, violent, 5%.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I can’t speak about Prairie Fire, but if you haven’t noticed an over abundance of “termites “ in the other areas you reference, you’re wearing blinders.

  28. NYC was cleaned up through paying attention to what are called "quality of life" laws. It sounds simple, but it is what the NYPD Administration, from the Chef down credit with the change, because it makes policing a part of the ordinary citizen's life and gets those citizens involved.

It simply means enforcing the laws that are on the books. If someone is driving around with loud music blasting, stop them and ticket them. (And if they go for a gun, kill them, and don't spend too much time investigating.) If somebody drives a pickup truck with n license plate, stop them and ticket them. if they have an earlier citation outstanding, impound the vehicle. If someone has a car with no tires or flat tires parked in their driveway, ticket the car and check back in two days. If it is still there, impound it. Impose a curfew on school nights, take offenders to a holding station, release them to a parent or guardian, after ticketing the parent or guardian. If a felon is caught with a firearm in his or her possession, hold them for the Federal Courts, it's a federal felony.

That should give you the idea, it worked in NYC, it might be worth trying here.

  29. Westport will die without ---blah blah blah It is already dead. Take a look at real entertainment districts. They are clean. They don't have garbage talking waitstaff and "I'm hot stuff owners. Forget it tear it down for a parking lot.

  30. If Westport business owners aren't willing to pay for their own security then they deserve what they get.

    ReplyDelete
  31. a lot of this debate is just political chatter. The simple fact is that we NEED more security in Westport and this is the best way to start the process and keep people safe.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Close Westport. It is a fucking public nuisance. Why hand over tax payer assets to keep a bunk of drunks fueled up? Clean up your shit hole of go broke. Pretty simple solution!
