Byrne, a professor at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas-who has examined tax increment financing (TIF) use in Missouri for the Show-Me Institute-has a new working paper on TIF job creation in Missouri. In the paper, Byrne examined data from the Missouri Department of Revenue and the U.S.
It's not entirely true that TIFs don't create any jobs.
ReplyDeleteActually, the development lawyers, bond attorneys, land flippers, and all the other transactional players who cash in big time before the first spade of dirt is turned are doing just fine, thanks.
And they really don't care if what's built is financially sustainable or not.
Regardless of how poorly a "project" does, or even if it stands empty and falling apart, these folks are long gone and the eyesore becomes the neighborhood's problem.
Great jobs created at public expense.
Just not yours.
