Millions Are Hounded for Debt They Don't Owe. One Victim Fought Back, With a Vengeance

On the morning a debt collector threatened to rape his wife, Andrew Therrien was working from home, in a house with green shutters on a cul-de-sac in a small Rhode Island town. Tall and stocky, with a buzz cut and a square, friendly face, Therrien was a salesman for a promotions company.

  1. Amazing story. The sad part is that there are many more Joel Tuckers out there, and not just in KC.

  2. There is nothing in this story to back up the assertion that millions are being hounded on fake debts - unless an occasional call from India qualifies as being "hounded." If so, that is one sorry ass hound.

  4. Missouri is the perfect breeding ground for this shit. Its wild west, outdated laws stretch the statute of limitations on debt, allows situations where 70 year old men can have their homes sold out from under them for a few hundred dollars of debt, allows a photocopy of a fake bill to serve as evidence that collectors investigated disputed debt and provided virtually no protections to innocent victims. In Missouri a debt collector does not have to be certified at anything, does not have to have ANY license, does not have to post a bond, can be a convicted felon, can legally lie.

Medical debt is even worse where care providers are allowed to force services, devices and other items on you that you do not want and even object to, allows medical firms to subcontract and employ others on your behalf without your consent, require no signed agreement to bill you and charge you whatever they wish, engage in inflated and fraudulent billing and extort you.

Apparently the rotten bastards in the state legislature think all this is just fine and dandy as, in spite of knowing what has been going on, they have failed to lift a finger to bring regulation in line with scores of other states that manage to keep up with the times.

  5. That is an incredible story, well worth reading. I was also harassed by people from Buffalo for debt I never owed. Surprisingly, I filed online complaints with the New York and Kansas Attorney General's and they both took care of it. I was shocked that it worked.
