Are Kansas City Food Deserts For Realz???

Call it a late-lunch link . . . One of our favorite number-crunchers serves up some FASCINATING DATA on a social ill that might or might not exist. Have a taste of the info and you decide . . .

More Research on Food Deserts

I've written here before, skeptically, of the plans to address the so-called food desert on Kansas City's East Side. Specifically, the plan to spend millions of dollars to subsidize a SunFresh grocery store is unwarranted and a waste of taxpayer funds. I've documented research that shows that nutritional inequality is not a function of distance from a grocery store.

  1. It would be far more effective to limit food stamps to bulk beans and grains, fresh produce, dairy and meat, and eliminate processed food and fast food from subsidies.

    1. Uh, yeah, sure, but what would the too lazy to cook, the dysfunctional addicts, and those who get their 'lektrisity 'n wodder cut off EAT?!

Well, besides those free noon meals at the church downtown, or getting a Whopper after panhandling?

  3. The KC inner city food desert is a complete myth. There is a Price Chopper off Indep. Avenue. Aldi has stores on Prospect, Paseo, Indep. Ave. and Troost. Save a Lot has stores on Troost and Truman. Seven stores in the inner city doesn't sound like a desert to me. That doesn't even include Wild Woody's or the Rollin' Grocer.

  5. It’s a food desert if the hood rats have to walk more than a block to the store! Have you seen how many freaking bus stops there are on prospect? Jeez there’s one every block for miles and miles!

  7. 3:21 - For a person who complains so much about people who post comments but don't act on them, you sure post a lot of comments without acting on any. But then, introspection has never really been your thing, has it?
