TKC FRIDAY FORESHADOWING: SHOULD KANSAS CITY WORRY ABOUT POLICE STOCKING UP ON RIOT GEAR???

Before we really get into it this morning . . . A quick question of KCPD equipment arises from our KICK-ASS TKC BLOG COMMUNITY . . .

This story seems innocent enough and locals want to see police have the tools they need to do their very dangerous job . . .

Fox4: KCMO police get equipped with new ballistic helmets to keep them safe in potential shootings

Deets:

The department announced earlier this week it's buying more than 900 ballistic helmets for its officers.

The helmets are meant to be used in potential situations where officers may come under fire . . .

"These officers -- I mean, they have to be equipped," said Stacy Jackson, wife to David Jackson with the KCMO Police Department. "They're the ones protecting us. We've got to at least provide equipment to protect them."

Accordingly, here's the response from a self-described KCPD "watchdog" on the topic of the new gear . . .

"KC has often asked for more police on the streets and greater 'community outreach' but now we see the same kind of militarization tactics from KCPD that have been used in Ferguson, MO during the uprising and among several other departments who are arming themselves with war machines. This is a far cry from community policing that has been demonstrated to reduce crime in other cities. Why are the police stocking up on riot gear? What are they preparing for? Are the protests planned for the midterm election really that terrifying to law enforcement? What kind of message does it send when KCPD sends police in full combat gear into our streets? And will these military uniforms also adorn officers in suburban neighborhoods too? No one is arguing against greater safety for officers, but who will protect the residents of KC from something that looks a great deal like military occupation."

To be fair, KCPD has used tactical gear like the helmet, armored vehicles and a vast array of spy tech (up to & including drones) during their operations for quite a number of years.

You decide . . .

  4. For the last 15 years, the department has issued non ballistic motorcycle helmets to officers as their riot control and tactical situation headgear. The only protection that offered was minimal to a blunt object and cost half the price as a ballistic helmet. I’d much rather have the officers wearing these responding to a potential active shooter, tactical situation, or riot disturbance. The opposite side of the argument would be what would those criticisms be when an officer is shot in the head and killed during one of these situations wearing the motorcycle helmets they are issued now?

For those that don’t know, KCPD has zero protective equipment issued to officers for civil disturbances or riots. They do not have the gear or suits you have seen in St. Louis.

Glad the department is taking steps to keep our officers safer, especially given the increasing unprovoked attacks on officers in recent years

  5. We need all the same gear St Louis has, unless there is better gear available. I hope we get the chance to use it. There is a cartain part of our population that needs a major beat down.

  7. Beyonce and Michael Brown are to blame for them not having riot gear too.

Let the white wanna be Beyonce's big mouth work for our benefit.

Anything less is inadequate for riot suppression.

  12. .......what kind of message does it send when police are in full combat gear in our streets"??????
    The message is
    1. Your streets are out of control
    2. Your streets ARE a combat zone
    3. And you already know that

    1. I wouldn’t say a ballistic helmet constitutes full combat gear. KCPD has no other protective equipment issued for these situations. For the last few decades they were issued 20 year old motorcycle helmets for protection during these incidents which aren’t bullet resistant. Good buy.

The funds being used are both public and private monies. I’d much rather pay for this and more for our Police and fire departments than extend the street car a mile to the river

Hey Assholio how about you put one of those helmets on and let me club you in the head a few times. A ballistic tesing. Dumbass.

  14. In case of a riot the KCPD will be issuing traffic tickets on I-29. Don't expect them to be in harms way.

  16. Better equipment would also include machine guns, hand grenades, missile launchers, tanks. In the case of a riot we need to be prepared to kill as many rioters as we can, as quickly as possible. This would make sure that we only have one riot.

  20. I don't agr5ee with many things i see in police departments, but one thing I can not compromise on is the FACT that every office has an obligation to defend himself and to have the tools to reasonably do so. Over the next decade you are going to see officers in helmets and flak vests. There will be more tactical equipment and vehicles. The U.S. Army Military Police school has developed the premier civil disturbance training and personnel protection training in the world and I believe that we will see thousands of civilian police officers attending the courses in years to come. I also believe that emergency planners and legislatures will be force to develop plans where police departments from all over the state can be converged into a single deference force to deal with civil disturbance and insurgency issues. I expect the training will provide a uniform standard for law enforcement agencies across the nation.

Folks need to understand that police officers don't get paid to loose. They do not get paid to take shit from street punks or get injured. I am certainly not a proponent of unbridled police brutality or abuse, but once use of force is justified no officer should withdraw force until the threat has been neutralized, ceases and desists. This does not require our permission as citizens.

No one in their right mind would fail to recognize that radical violent voices are given more credibility and encouragement by pundits than ever. Violent attacks on police and citizens are out of control in metro areas across America. Idiotic behavior is rewarded by other idiots and this unacceptable social behavior is rationalized by politicos daily. Rather than preach good citizenship we have college courses in Civil Disobedience and we cater to those misguided misfits who threaten to riot in the streets, burn, loot and rip at the fabric of a decent society.

Police officers are not your mothers or your nannys. they are forced to work with these changing attitudes and general shit that have ever increasing numbers of low lifes and thugs believing they are heroes for breaking any laws they don't agree with. We have done way too much to lower our standards to make these animals role models and heroes. Police don't just need to buy the gear. They need to be using it to make sure the price of lawlessness and violence is a high one.

  22. Amazing first in media criticism of government today as Dave Helling in Star editorial actually criticizes Johnson County pay for jury duty.
Only because his daughter was affected.
He has always promoted every Sly James policy or practice. Never willing to criticize Sly's disinterest in murder rate in Killa City.
Never offering support for cops to fight crime. He usually joins Kraske in praise and worship of mayor and all things Sly.
Perhaps if Helling, Kraske, Sanchez and Hoopz are personally affected by crime, they will be willing to criticize his Dishonor Sly.
