TKC BREAKING NEWS!!! KANSAS CITY TAX FIGHTERS RAGE AGAINST MORE CASH FOR DOWNTOWN CONVENTION HOTEL!!!

The debate over transparency with taxpayer cash and the Kansas City development agenda continues today.

To wit . . .

CHECK THE LATEST NOTE FROM CFRG CALLING OUT THE PROPOSED DOWNTOWN KANSAS CITY MIKE BURKE CONVENTION HOTEL NOW ASKING FOR EVEN MORE CITY HALL SUBSIDY!!!

The project has been delayed for about a year but now Loews taking over the financing, for the moment, offers more hope for development lawyers and their urban planner acolytes.

Here's the word and more insight into the continued focus on new pet projects in and around Downtown KC that STILL take precedence over any other local need:

Citizens For Responsible Government KC: NO-BID Hotel back to the trough!

It’s starts all over again Wednesday morning. If you are concerned your tax dollars will used to build a $325mm convention NO-BID hotel (originally it was a $315mm hotel) instead of supporting local taxing jurisdictions (schools., Libraries, etc.), then you should attend this meeting and share your concerns or call your city councilperson and let your concerns be known. At the very least you should read through the documents and see for your self how this project shapes up. Here’s the link:

Here’s the LRCA board meeting notice:

Here’s the meeting notice:

LCRA Board Meeting
November 29 @ 9:30 am
Town Pavilion
1100 Walnut, Kansas City, Missouri, 64016
EDCKC, Suite 1700, Jackson Room

There are 34 documents and still not all the questions are answered. It appears they are trying to overwhelm the voters and decision makers with mountains of paperwork, hoping no one will take the time to read through the documents to see what’s really hidden within.

If CFRG was a member of the city council, the TIF commission or the LCRA, we would demand an audit by an outside, independent, qualified attorney and accountant to go through the documents and discern what’s really there and how it could impact local taxpaying voters. We just spent several million dollars to do just that on the airport. The taxpayers will own this hotel, we deserve to know. Our guess is it will be rubber stamped by all the agencies involved.

Pardon us if we are skeptical. But remember these are the same developers and attorneys who swore in 2014 before a District Judge, in open court, they had contracts and financing in place on this hotel and if the judge granted CFRG’s legally verified petition to place this hotel on a ballot for the people to decide if they wanted it, the CIty would suffer greatly and the developers would lose millions on contracts they couldn’t honor because of the delay caused by the vote. Remember these individuals testifying are lawyers and have taken an oath to up hold the laws of all municipalities.

Then in June of 2017, two and a half years later and nothing has happened, Hyatt Corporation discloses there were never any contracts nor firm financing in place back in 2014? Why isn’t the Missouri Bar Association looking into this? Some suggest it was perjury. Maybe the vote should be reinstated since it was precluded under false pretenses?

  1. So, Loews will be the beneficiary of City Hall largess.

If this deal was really good for the city, then there would't be such a huge subsidy.

Make no mistake: this is the kcmo hotel and it will be run accordingly. Into the ground.

    1. Hotel Kansas City? That has a horrible ring to it.

    2. In the time it has taken to build this thing, haven't there been three or 4 more downtown hotels added? Seems like the market has filled the demand while KC was playing around. That's what always happens.

  2. Hotel Sly: The No-Tell Motel.

  3. Watch how Bob Long the know it all push this through. He’s a total asshole. Instead og being an advocate, he’s become a self-indulgent asshole.

  4. Once again, Sly and the gang are little more than doormen who hold open the vault of taxpayer money so that "developers", which Burke is not, can more easily roll out wheelbarrows full of cash.
If it's not an abatement from KCMO government, then go to the TIF Commission.
If that doesn't work, try the KCRA, an obscure agency that the public rarely even hears anything about.
Of course, there's always the PortKC gang, living large on cash from the casinos and desperate to become yet another taxpayer subsidy player.
Meanwhile, the libraries, schools, and other legitimate institutions of government suffer the financial losses, the streets continue to deteriorate, the murder rate soars, the PD is underfunded, and services that residents actually depend on are ignored.
Have ANY hotels that have been built in KCMO in recent memory been financially sustainable without taxpayer money?
Local trickle down economics at their best!

  14. At the apex of all of this is the - city manager! Isn't his employment contract up for renewal or just been renewed? Fire him, give him the damn golden parachute! It will be pittance compared to how he is wasting and risking the public's money. He should learn on the job in a different city. He's more political than the elected officials. He's the one that wanted to ram rod the airport on a no bid contract. Then when it went to bid he wanted to provide Burns and Mac a "swiss cheese" chance to one-up the competition. Are you serious? So corrupt! Where is the critical analytic skills the 7-lawyers on council learned in law school and private practice? Hello? Councilmembers Fowler, Lucas, Shields, Canaday, McManus and Justus - WAKE UP!!!
