Show-Me Newbie Missouri AG Against Google

Sketchy Internets power play from a rookie politico who seems more concerned about moving up the political ladder than anything related to his the job of being the top law enforcement official in Missouri . . .

Missouri AG Josh Hawley launches investigation of Google

Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley's office on Monday issued a subpoena to Google as part of an investigation into whether the tech giant is violating Missouri's consumer protection and anti-trust laws. The investigation delves into Google's collection of data on users and whether Google, the world's most popular search engine, has manipulated search results at the expense of competitors, according to a release from Hawley's office.

  1. Google knows more about you than you do, I agree they are way beyond collecting too much info on everybody

  2. What is scary is when you order things at work from say one website and go home and order or look at things from another website and are being shown the things you ordered at work. I swear Goggle knows what time you take a piss each day and the amount you piss.

    1. You can, of course, erase your cookies. The technology behind this can be understood by an above average fifth grader.

  3. @9:02, you do realize there is so much more information than that right? Websites track mouse data on the page, log where it pauses, what link it hovers over. This has nothing to do with locally stored cookies. If you log into yahoo or gmail on both computers, the ads will display based on what you looked at cookies or not. Give it a try, do some shopping in a "private" window, you know, the same one you think makes you safe for surfing porn in, and watch as the ads pop up at home long after you've closed that window. Your IP and equipment mac addresses are also tracked and logged. Even if you have dynamic IP from your ISP, once the MAC address of your machine has been linked to any of your other machines, it means nothing what IP you have. About the best thing you can do is go through the TOR browser, but keep in mind, while this permits anonymous browsing at your end node destination; every single node in between (ALWAYS operated by "baddies") is tracking and logging every single piece of information that passes through.

Bottom line, no, the tracking/ad,data collection technology employed by google and other major internet players is not even slightly dismissed by tech easily understood by a 5th grader.

  5. Switch your search engine from Google to DuckDuckGo, because DDG does not track you.

  6. The search engine means nothing, most tracking occurs on a site by site basis (not to mention the webpage depth of less tracking alternates is MUCH less than G/Y crawlers - i.e. less available info). Google is the largest host of websites/services. For instance, my email and webpage "server" is a leased virtual server from ... google. I harbor no illusions that every thing I email out or receive is fully scanned for data. Yahoo and google certainly record any search data directly, but they also "analyze" data collected from websites hosted on their services or through partner agreements with giants like Amazon. For instance, you can directly navigate to a particular site, purchase or look through some products, directed ads will then appear in sponsored ad spaces on completely unrelated websites.

Bottom line, there is NO such thing as internet anonymity. Even here on TKC, the rest of you don't know who I am, but TKC could find it out with a few clicks of the mouse (assuming he runs/manages his server/hosting independently). Be certain if you're going to state your mind, that someone else knows who you are. I frame all my posts as though I'm standing in the room with whomever I'm posting to.
