Kansas City Fair Housing Campaign Continues Via Data-Driven Advocacy

Petitioners attempt to reform local housing and apply more stringent rules for landlords . . . Recently, we talked about KC's eviction rate as ranking among the nations' worst.

Working with one of the richest datasets on eviction in the country. We compiled 173,720 eviction filings, spanning 17 years, drawn from the Jackson County Landlord-Tenant court records. The data are at the address-level and have been geocoded and mapped.

Over the study period, an average of 42 formal evictions were filed per business day. Evictions were filed in relatively consistent numbers, year over year, suggesting that there could be a core of landlords in the city who rely on eviction as a part of their business models. Evictions have been spatially concentrated in the city’s poorest neighborhoods—but their impact is spreading to other parts of town, consistent with development trends.

Black people living in poverty were disproportionately impacted by eviction during the study period. We performed a multivariate analysis that showed that race is the most important factor that predicts whether or not someone will be evicted in Kansas City, even when we hold income constant.

  2. People are evicted because they don't pay their rent and/or they destroy their homes. Why do we protect these people?

  3. Pull your britches up, get a job, pay your fucking rent, turn down that shit you call music and stop being, or pretending to be, a criminal. Watch all your eviction problems disappear.

I would bulldoze a building and convert it to paid parking, before I'd rent it to lowlifes.

  4. These numbers are all legal evictions through the court system, the landlords have every right to evict these lowlifes who aren’t paying or is destroying their property. The pity party is over, time to pull up your boot straps and get a real job and get off the government tit. I want real numbers on how many actual poor people that have been evicted. I’m betting those numbers are really low

Landlords hate evictions of any kind. Evictions means no rent being paid so no income coming in till someone new moves in. But you can't just leave someone staying or living on your property who in'st paying the rent makes no matter what color they are.

  6. "a core of landlords in the city who rely on eviction as part of their business model" How does a landlord make a profit on evictions? That's about the dumbest quote I have ever heard.

If you don't make your car payments, your car is repossessed. The county will take your house if you don't pay your taxes. Why is a landlord expected to give a tenant free rent indefinitely?

  7. This is just more entitlement bullshit that says certain races should get a hall pass because slavery 150 fucking years ago. Nobody with any sense is going to give two shits about yet another PC biased so-called news story, which unfortunately has become the Hallmark of TKC.

No, failure to pay rent is by far the most important factor leading to evictions.

What they've actually proven is that blacks fail to pay rent more often than other races, even when their incomes are the same. But there is not much chance that they will acknowledge that as a problem, not when Blame Whitey is so convenient.

  11. I'm sure any second now Mizza Cleaver will get a huge government tax payer grant to relieve rent indebtedness. After all this is Kansas City, the beta test for universal reparations.

I would bet the correlation between credit scores and evictions would be much higher than the correlation with incomes and evictions. Some poor people handle money well, some don't. Hate to stereotype but black people are among the poor who too often don't. So instead of blaming the landlord perhaps these folks should work on educating the poor on money management.

  14. What business model benefits from evictions? The poverty pimp business model. The same business model that exploits poverty for the gain of those supposedly helping.
