TKC TUESDAY LAS VEGAS MASSACRE AFTERMATH QUESTION: IS MAYOR SLY GLOATING ABOUT GUN CONTROL AND SHOULD KANSAS CITY RESTART EFFORTS TO CRACKDOWN ON FIREARMS???

A terse statement from Kansas City Mayor Sly James regarding the Las Vegas Mass Shooting still conveys quite a bit.

Checkit:

"Yet another community faced a horrific instance of gun violence, fear, and loss. Our thoughts are with all those families affected in Las Vegas. And we’re grateful for the brave work of the first responders."

On the face of it, his comment is generic and appropriate . . .

However, his use of the phrases "yet another" and "gun violence" might trigger opponents of the 2nd Amendment to continue their crusade.

Remember that Mayor Sly was SMACKED DOWN when he attempted to work against CCW inside the city limits.

However . . .

In Kansas City & beyond . . . Opponents of assault rifles, large capacity magazines and souped-up bullets are rallying to revitalize gun control efforts in the aftermath of the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

And so, as always, we put it to our blog community . . .

IS IT TIME FOR KANSAS CITY TO RETHINK TOUGHER GUN CONTROL TACTICS TO PREVENT LOCAL DEADLY MASS SHOOTINGS???

Prez Trump refuses to talk about gun control but there's local precedent for gun crackdowns that don't require new legislation.

The Kansas City Gun Experiment
was a milestone in police action targeting illegal weapons in order to curb crime.

"The Kansas City Gun Experiment used intensive police patrols directed to an 80-block hotspot area where the homicide rate was 20 times the national average. Patrol officers seized guns by frisking individuals who were arrested and by making plain view sightings of firearms during routine traffic violation or safety stops. Traffic stops were most effective in locating illegal guns, with 1 gun found per 28 stops. Gun crimes, including drive-by shootings and homicides, declined significantly during the 29-week experimental period between July 1992 and January 1993. Drive-by shootings dropped from 7 to 1 in the target area . . ."

Like it or not, this was one of the most groundbreaking law enforcement tactics Kansas City has seen in its history. Some anti-violence advocates encourage a second look at this controversial effort.

In the meantime, the gun control debate rages and politicos seem more sympathetic to a fight over policy that has been a losing battle thus far:

  1. Sly would rather lobby for his friends at burns & mcdonnell than really do anything about crime.

    This is just more grandstanding.

    Typical from mayor james.

    1. Mayor Sly James was correct to keep his comments short, just like President Trump was also smart to stay on the teleprompter when he addressed the nation about this tragedy.

  2. Of course gun control won't work. If we have really strict gun control, who would still have guns? The murderers in the hood.

  3. The shooting is shocking of course, but overall if KC wants to be safer, it would encourage more people to get CCW training.

  4. The usual "look what's happening over there" approach to Sly's avoiding his own responsibilities.
What took place in Vegas is horrifying.
But it has NOTHING to do with the violence that regularly terrifies KCMO residents, particularly in east side neighborhoods, or with the murders that have reached near-record numbers this year.
It's easy to make speeches or march around about events in other parts of the country, but it takes some real effort, time, guts, and action to try to improve things right here in your own back yard.
The issues in KCMO are clear and well-known.
The town needs a serious city government that will address the most basic public service of all:
    Public Safety.

  5. Chicago has really strict gun control laws. They do not appear to have worked very well there.

  8. He needs to worry about crime in KANSAS CITY.
not the Constitution or the Amendment.
We have a Congress for this.
This is just a diversion for him to take the focus off of his responsibilities.

  11. Sly James and others like Maria Chappelle-Nadal and Emanuel Clever are gloating about the tragedy in Las Vegas.

The african american topix forum proves that black people are celebrating the massacre. There are some disturbing posts on there, but yet Sly James has put gun violence first only on white people not blacks who kill in our city. You can tell his little speech is painful to spit out, like a thoughtless form letter.

To show even more hatred the Chiefs took a knee yesterday.

Has Emanuel Clever said anything yet, or is he celebrating as well???

  19. Sly James = Cheap Politician In A Cheap Suit

Remember, this is a man whose own family can't steer clear of the law. He had a brother or cousin who was arrested for firing off a gun in public, and a son who had multiple arrests. He ought to STFU until he gets his own house in order.

Calling for strict gun control is Cheapo James' way of not accepting responsibility for KCMO's record-breaking homicide count.

With James' failed policies, the only thing different had this tragedy happened in KC, would be that the gunman took a free ride on the ToyTrain to the taxpayer subsidized convention hotel where he carried out his plans.

Jimmy Kimmel is a Hollywood a-hole, and his thoughts are irrelevant. Same thing for the country guitarist.

Unless Cheapo James wants to build a wall around KCMO with mandatory checkpoints, passing stricter gun laws in KC is pointless and wouldn't have prevented a Las Vegas type of shooting.

  26. For the sake of clarity it is important that Sly specifically provide information as to what laws and/or what changes he would make to laws that would have prevented the Las Vegas Massacre. I doubt that he is even capable of doing that, but if he would it would show that he is not just using the situation to forward his own political agenda and that he is actually making sense and suggesting action that will save lives and protect citizen rights.

  37. Gun control is inevitable. Face it. It's time. The country deserves it. White males have only themselves to blame. The country can no longer turn a blind eye to violence inflicted by it's own home-grown terrorists. The usual stale arguments about responsible gun-ownership has been rendered moot by the latest act of senseless violence perpetrated by yet another gun-nut. Las Vegas joins Orlando, Newtown, Aurora, Columbine et al. All the worn-out cliches of "only criminals will have guns", and "mental illness" no longer hold water. White males are the biggest threat to American citizens. You are three times as likely to be killed by a domestic shooter than a terrorist attack by a feared Muslim. Trump has used hi Travel-Ban as an excuse to keep Americans safe from terror and his supporters support it wholeheartedly." We must keep America safe" they say. Well now using the same logic, there must be an assault weapons ban as well. It's time. It will happen deal with it. Hopefully some of you will resist, and you and your weapons will taken off the street. Get used to it. It's time. We are legion and our agenda "Trumps" you.

  38. Statistics show that since 1982, the majority of mass shootings — 54 percent — were committed by white men, according to data from Mother Jones. Black people were the second largest perpetrators of mass shootings based on ethnic background,

    The blacks are catching up!

  45. What more gun control do we need? What we actually need is to bring mental health care into this century and develop methodology to detect nutballs. We already know guns don't take an elevator to the 32nd floor, bust out windows and fire themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  46. There is a cultural behavior model tied to desperate economics, then exasperated by weak community leadership. I saw a special about a tribe in Africa that had a spirit of positivism that made the world good despite their modest means. The learned culture is failing and black leaders won't recognize that. A cultural grand bargain needs to take place or I see worse ahead, and it has to be a priority.

    ReplyDelete
  47. And I do think the country should no longer tolerate high performance rate of fire weapons, being ok why this happens. If Trump had balls he would take that on with force.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Change all sides of the equation or get ready for more.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Yeah, when will pressure cooker control laws get passed? Those larger models are too dangerous, and probably should be banned. While we're at it, backpacks sized to accommodate those cookers should be banned as well.
