TKC QUESTION: WILL THE CREATIVE CLASS ART ECONOMY SAVE KANSAS CITY?!?!

Tonight we take a glimpse of talking points used to justify a bevy of taxpayer subsidy with very little profit or benefit for residents overall.

For the most part, City Hall subsidizing the local arts community is usually just an exercise in cleverly disguised political payoffs sold to the clueless public as "culture" but targeted at very specific communities as a reward for civic alliances.

Specific Examples:

- Art in the loop - Offers public funding and KCMO back grants to a bevy of artist to beautify development for LUXURY CONDOS out of the price rage of most Kansas City residents.

- 18th & Vine "investment" of more than $100-MILLION over a generation still hasn't turned a profit or changed the fate of the 3rd District.

- Judging from their website . . . Arts KC only hires white ladies for some weird reason that doesn't speak to claims of artistic "diversity" from City Hall.

The list goes on and on but now the East Crossroads attempts to offer tax breaks to lure big money from the burgeoning arts scene into the urban core . . . Which is a trick that most pizza delivery dudes don't even fall for . . .

In general, fine art is a scam:

But I digress . . .

Ironically, while art is supposed to inspire critical insight and independent thinking, the celebration of KC's art scene mostly just repeats the company line from City Hall and local developers.

Description of tonight's clip . . .

"In Kansas City, we're told the arts economy equals a quarter of a billion dollars. Explore what that number means, what's counted -- what isn't -- and what the future of Kansas City looks like . . ."

Take a look:

  1. Simple answer: NO.

A bit more, this is just KC running the great fool theory. The sad thing here is the same game is being run on 12th & Oak by far more crafty developers.

Making money in real estate is the real creative work in KCMO.

  2. Most of our "art" community are just unemployed untalented tattooed faggots and lesbians who like to think they are unique and sophisticated. Meanwhile, everyone just laughs at them and doesn't take them seriously.

    1. And what do you think people say about you? At least artists are trying to create something. Better than just living to shit on the work of others.

  6. I've worked in the nonprofit arts for fifteen years and 99% of what they do is totally worthless nonsense. The only worthwhile subsidized art projects I've seen are when money is used to provide books, materials, instruction, etc., for young students.

That whole enterprise is part of the professional-creative-consulting class, who largely come from upper middle-class and affluent families; have worthless degrees from prestigious universities and want more than anything an easy job that gives them unbelievable flexibility and highfalutin "status" that makes them appear to be "giving back" or doing good in the community. They are generally lazy, selfish, and spend more time networking for personal gain than they do actually helping the community --- or whatever the intended mission is.

It's total bullshit. And I'm an "arts" person. Real artists hone their craft on their own dime, in their own time, far away from b.s. organizations and grant distributors or civic funds, etc.

  7. I don't think we are going to be able to look to the Kansas City Atheist Coalition for help on this.

Considering that there are no Blacks in any of their leadership positions...either as officers or on the Bored of Directors.

Perhaps you could interview their re elected President who...I am proud to say...was re elected with 100 PER CENT of the vote!!!

Those atheists sure know how to have an election!

  9. Even Richard Florida admitted his creative class pitch has failed.

But only after he cashed in first.

  10. 4:27 is right on target. Remember when infamous Joan was going to "Direct" a half billion dollars and didn't have a plan for distributing the funds? The emphasis in K.C. is on the wine and cheese and how much a piece of art is worth.
Kansas City forgets all about the value of the piece of art relative to its ability to inspire. We are interested in buying creative panties, made in K.C. One should Investigate what Florence Italy or Bangkok, Thailand or Bogota, Columbia art critics say about Kansas City ART. Forget the self identified "art critics here in Missouri.

  11. I'm not saying that art is not important. I am just saying the crap that passes for art today is just crap.
