TKC PUBLIC SERVICE: KANSAS CITY MARATHON RUINS SATURDAY MORNING!!!

The Kansas City Marathon is currently underway and that makes travel through midtown mostly impossible for people who are up early.

There's extra security, more space for "fans" that are really just miserable relatives and even more leeway for runners. Check the Marathon website for route info.

Nevertheless . . .

HAS THE KANSAS CITY MARATHON OUTLIVED ITS USEFULNESS AND SHOULDN'T THEY REALLY HAVE THIS THING IN OVERLAND PARK???

The middle-class hobbyists might raise a few coins for charity but for the most part, the marathon is a self-indulgent activity that's not really that healthy for participants and blocks busy KCMO streets . . . Most Midtowners regard it as a nuisance and their voices have been consistently ignored by the local political elite.

You decide . . .

  1. Don't be a stick in the mud. This is a great tradition and this year the routes are a little bit kinder to KC streets. Yes, it can be a hassle to wait in traffic but there was plenty of advanced warning and the money going to community sports in KC's urban core is a great thing!

    1. ^^^ The route is already a cluster. Got cars backed up 10 deep on Grand. Whatever warning they gave, it wasn't enough.

This isn't the old days, people actually live in Downtown now and this race was not well planned.

    2. Way too early for this shiz. If you are out running, be quiet and please bring back donuts.

  2. KC screws up anything it touches, why should this event be any different?

  3. Just because you sit behind a computer and don't exercise is not a reason to discourage others...

  4. ^^^ You writing this while running the marathon, tough guy?

    Doubtful.

  6. Relax Already! Plenty of things worthy to bitch about - this is hardly one of ‘em

  7. Agree! Marathon route used to go right by our house on the Missouri side. Complete disrespect by the city of Kansas City for its taxpayers. One of many reasons we moved to KS side and happier here.

  8. If you have to work Saturdays in the midtown area, it is miserable. Clear a trail through Swope Park.

  9. I agree with 9:33!!!

I was trying to get from Shawnee to Union Hill to feed a friend's cat--
    Main AND Broadway closed
Had to detour to 55th and east of Oak
Five officers did not know the route or where I might cross--
    each gave me different instructions.
    So much for traffic "CONTROL"...
One gal suggested I either come back three hours later and park half a mile away --and WALK!
If I could walk, MAYBE I'd run in the marathon.
    I have a crushed heel...paratrooper injury, 20 pieces.
Watching some of the participants, clearly out of shape, I might have beat them with my limp.

I was told to cross at the Plaza, but it too was closed--a ghost town--
How much damage to retail and restaurants
    On a Saturday??
    Including Costco on Linwood--
basically unreachable, on biggest shopping day of the week.

When folks say we publicized the route for a month--
    where? The Kansas City STAR???
    That no one reads?

Wrong route, wrong day of the week.
    Not worth shutting down retail.

I can only imagine the Uber excess rate to haul these folks home.
Because it's for sure most cannot walk back to the starting line.

  10. Bored yuppies with too much time on their hands block the streets so they can show off their designer running apparel and get a free t-shirt.

Well then, Hell - forget it!

  12. From the Hipster Manifesto:

"We hipsters are getting soooooo tired of all the negativity surrounding the glamorous streetcar we have decided this city (using the term loosely) will have, so we are hereby issuing the fifth revision of our Hipster Manifesto. After all, if it worked for Marx, it should work for us. We think Groucho would be so proud if only he were alive today, and if he wouldn't approve, well he could always move. Even if Groucho would not approve, Zeppo, Chico, and Gummo most likely would. Harpo never said anything, anyway, so who cares?

It’s obvious that some people in Kansas City are behind the times and do not understand the contributions we hipsters are making to this once moribund cowtown. As incredible as it seems, some people actually (can you believe it?) object to the fact that they are inconvenienced by all of the benefits we are bringing to flyover country simply by breathing the air in this midwestern backwater. Well, all we can say is get used to it. We’re here, and we’re not going anywhere—well, for a while, anyway. The following are the new rules we hipsters are establishing for this burnt out burg. If you do not like them, you can always move.

If you live anywhere from downtown to 85th Street, we reserve the right to hold marathons in your neighborhoods on any and all given Saturdays we choose. You should plan to stay in your homes and off the streets when we hold these events. If you are so inconsiderate that you simply must get out on one of the Saturdays we have occupied your neighborhood, please plan to do so after we are finished with our marathons, as we will do everything possible to thwart any automobile traffic we see. If you object to our taking over your neighborhoods for a good cause, you are a whiner, a cheapskate, and probably an obese doughnut-eating anti-fitness freak, and you do not deserve to live anywhere, let alone in the pleasant neighborhoods we have decided to honor with our presence so frequently. If you’re Jewish and are trying to get to temple (we hear this excuse a lot—even from people who are probably not even Jewish), well you’re not supposed to be operating machinery on the Sabbath anyway, so there. If you do not like this, you can always move or convert... ."

9:01 moved and is much happier. Why don't you do the same?

  14. 2:56 for the win!!!

That was a genius post, and needs to be expanded to future commentary.

    Who will design the Tshirt?!
Maybe some Jews--they can sell it? (too soon? too late? too true?)

There's a hipster tshirt shop in the alley at 18th & Wyandotte in the Bauer Building
Tony posted a cool lonely alley pic today on his Facebook. Maybe start with that image.

By the way, since I could not matriculate downtown, exactly what did they do with the trolley during the marathon?
We know it's so slow, the runners could outrun it.

  15. Tracy,

That was just an excerpt from the Hipster Manifesto. The whole thing is much longer and includes more benefits hipsters have bestowed on this excuse for a backwater.

  20. Be tolerant, OCD sufferers need a sport too. As Forest Gump said, "I kept running and running for no particular reason".

  21. Kansas Citians love their marathon because it helps them believe their decrepit and murderous town is something other than a slum. Creating a traffic jam and calling it hip and progressive. Dumb-ass hillbillies.

  22. I have OCD, 7:44, and as some might say, "I keep posting and posting on TKC for no particular reason"!

I alphabetize my spices, my 883 hats are in color order, and my sock drawer is in perfect order, including a bag for the orphan socks and socklets, just in case they find a mate later in life.

But unlike KC Marathon-aholics, my hobbies do not shut down commerce or navigation.

I thought overnight about the commenter who suggested moving the route to the Paseo or beyond--
would not disturb commerce in the least.
But of course, many white families would be totally unwilling to participate, in the age of "post-Ferguson-effect", fearing being picked off by agitated BLM snipers. So that's a non-starter of an alternative.
Can you just imagine, white folks driving east, parking their Buick in front of ramshackle homes, and getting out of the car with their back packs and mini-coolers and lawn chairs and squatting there in the weed-filled front yard shouting "Good job!" to the passing throng????
