TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! KCFD CONFRONTS LEGACY OF DISCRIMINATION AGAINST AFRICAN-AMERICAN FIRE FIGHTERS!!!
Recently, the nation was shocked at the racial insensitivity and outright harassment of a firefighter that made national news.
The story . . .
Firehouse: Detroit Probationary FF Fired after Bringing Watermelon to Station
The postscript on that story is interesting because some Black firefighters are defending the guy . . . And all of this proves that most people don't understand the insular, twisted and often backward culture that exists within so many big city fire departments.
Over the past few years, new leadership and better public relations have improved the image of the FD among the local political elite.
More to the point . . . Local 42, the KCFD political arm, is no longer the juggernaut of KCMO politics and their endorsement doesn't influence elections any longer now that corporations with far deeper pockets have hijacked the agenda at City Hall.
Still, new equipment, a focus on EMT services (the future for the KCFD) and tragic losses have bolstered the department's standing among the local electorate.

ONCE AGAIN DISCRIMINATION COMPLAINTS AGAINST THE KCFD REVEAL A LACK OF PROGRESS FOR THE INSTITUTION THAT REMAINS MIRED IN THE PAST!!!
A lawsuit under consideration this week focuses on the lack of promotion and leadership roles for African-American employees.
Thanks to pressure from this blog, there have been a few recruiting minority efforts from KCFD but the reality is that their historic record on diverse hiring practices and promotion is abysmal and very few of their leaders in top ranking positions are women or people of color.
The KCFD might meet quotas but FALLS FAR BEHIND in minority hiring compared to all Kansas City, MO departments.
Even worse . . .
Insiders know that the culture of the KCFD still needs to change as family connections and cronyism continue to dominate the department, their hiring and promotion - A phenomena that limits career advancement for Fire Fighters of EVERY demographic -- Yes, white people too.
And so . . .
As KCFD transitions from an institution once dominated by Fire Fighter jocks to a bigger organization hosting workers who are EMT ambulance service providers first and foremost . . . It's the hope of this blog community that City Hall pushes for greater KCFD reform and a departure from a proud but often discriminatory history.
