Remember Kansas City Smacks???

Throwback for Tuesday as public TV offers a lunch time serving of Kansas City foodie nostalgia in this missive:

Whatever Happened to Smaks?

The elephant on Johnson Drive stopped traffic. "My dad [Bill Fielder] had met a zookeeper and he asked him to bring over an elephant for the opening of Smaks," Wes Fielder said. "You'd watch the cars out front and people would slam on their brakes to try to figure out what was going on."

  1. Article fails to mention the Wornall Road location, basically across the street from the old Hen House location a few blocks north of 85th st. I think it's a Taco Bell now.
I made minimum wage there, cooking burgers. About $1.45 per hour.
I remember showing my mom my first paycheck and she looks at it and says, "Never trust anybody with four "L's" in their last name."

  2. I loved eating a Smaks and Allen's Drive-In. The food was tasty and fairly inexpensive for the time. My favorite was the BBQ burger from Smaks. Allen's was the place to go in old Northeast. I really miss both places.

  8. Smak's at 29th & State Ave., KCK, was a busy spot for eats as much as a weekend teen scene (before my teens in late 60s, then through the 70s, and before according to parents tales). Peters Drive-In, a local Dotte family owned burger, etc. spot, a few blocks west on State Ave., was even more popular. Peters got so crowded with "cruiser cars" on Friday game nights trying to loop through the lot that a motorcycle popos directed traffic (no left turns while crowded) to keep State from backing up in front of the fire station at the edge of Kensington Park. In the mid 70s if a car tried circling through without parking to order food or drinks while there were empty stalls, the a popo would give an eat or leave command.

  12. The first girl I ever fucked was a waitress on Johnson Drive. I would pick her up, ram her with my Johnson and take her home every night after work.
