Kansas City Socialite Tracy Thomas Reports Desperate Times For #NewKCI Campaign

A blitz of posting today from our pal Tracy offers some important insight on the new airport from one of those horrible civic meetings that consultants are paid to attend . . .

Check Tracy's post but here are the highlights . . .

- Southwest pulls out of a promotional press conference seyz Tracy . . .

- The #NewKCI now has $1.6 MILLION in their campaign coffers Tracy tells us . . .

- According to Tracy, the pro-airport campaign is now focused mostly on big money voters rather than pushing their message to all the plebs who might be skeptical of corporate hijinks.

Again, read Tracy's post for her delightful prose and insider knowledge of the upscale lives of the local rich and ambitious i.e. Centurions chatter.

You decide . . .

  1. For the record, I am neither a Socialite, or a Socialist!

I think Tony is merely acknowledging that I do know alot of folks. He interprets that as a socialite.

I do go to KCMO many times a week, this week for Unicorn Theatre/Pulitzer winning play, Disgraced. And the Tivoli, during daylight hours, "Loving Vincent" is outstanding.

Southwest didn't "pull out" of press conference, just refuse to hold one to clinch the election, perhaps since it's a dead heat, and when it loses, they would have mud on their face for their lies and threats.

  4. Save KCI's convenience.....but improve it eith some common sense remodeling.....and fixing the stuff that city hall has engineered to break to make the airport look bad.

    Vote no!

  5. frequent flyers want kci plus improvements.

frwquent flyers are the core of airline profitability.

frequent flyers do not go to the airport for date night at a fast-food restaurant. frequent flyers do not go to the airport to go shopping for t-shirts and gadgets.

frequent flyers do want electric plugs by seats. frequent flyers do want bathrooms behind security to be adequate.

most of all, frequent flyers want quick dropoff/pickup and entry/exit without the huge lines of so-called modern airports. also, with easy entry, they like being able to sitvwithout walking a mile so they can be productive.

  11. Yes, 2:57--and let me guess...
not one of the 1700 in the audience ever dared to ask Southwest these questions:
    1. How many gates are you closing if the voters say no?
    2. If you, controlling half of the current gates, then finances half of the billion dollar remodel, then how much will you raise our ticket prices?
    3. if you have control over who else gets to come in to the market, how many of your current gates are you willing to give up to allow more competition?
    4. Can you name even ONE business that came to KC because of our airport?
    5. Or even ONE business that left because of your "customer experience"?
    6. Why in hell don't you fix the broken formica on the doors of the women's restrooms at Southwest? Have you no pride or decency, sir? Or the crappy door latches? Do we have to do everything for you??
    7. If the voters reject this corrupt rush job, with a few drawings from Edgemoor, and no contracts, then seriously, you will refuse to support a better plan for a remodel, with a vote and real planning, in 2018?? What's the big rush?
    8. When you asked KCI for a few (four) gates for a "pilot's lounge", and KCI refused, a few months ago--and you then went to St. Louis, which gave you that "pilot's lounge", how did that make you FEEL, sir? How was your "customer experience" with Sly James??? Note, you do realize, don't you, that it was all fake move on the part of now departed Mark Van Liow,Airport Director, to jam Southwest into an already crowded terminal? And that we actually have one completely empty terminal where we might have given you a free "pilot's lounge", to sleep some pilots in case others show up drunk or there is a mechanical breakdown, so you could replace a fresh, rested pilot and stay on schedule? He could have just taken a free shuttle from the empty terminal over to the active one?

  12. Tracy,
I'm not with Southwest but can answer your questions. Please forgive my need to remain anonymous in this public forum.

    1. How many gates are you closing if the voters say no?

None. We just won't expand current service and may reduce if the additional issues with operating here make it advantageous to do so.

    2. If you, controlling half of the current gates, then finances half of the billion dollar remodel, then how much will you raise our ticket prices?

As has been shown at every other airport project in the country, ticket prices are unrelated to airport expenses. Your parking will likely increase though.

    3. if you have control over who else gets to come in to the market, how many of your current gates are you willing to give up to allow more competition?

We don't now nor will we have control of the gates and there will be at least 6 empty ones when the new terminal opens. Moreover, the new gates will all be flexible. Anyone can use them.

    4. Can you name even ONE business that came to KC because of our airport? Are you talking about the current KCI?

I can think of one: Southwest

    5. Or even ONE business that left because of your "customer experience"?

Again, Southwest will not expand and the airlines that attempted to hub here are all out of business.

    6. Why in hell don't you fix the broken formica on the doors of the women's restrooms at Southwest? Have you no pride or decency, sir? Or the crappy door latches? Do we have to do everything for you??

Actually, we are investing several million dollars in the coming months in duct tape improvements just to remain functional.

    7. If the voters reject this corrupt rush job, with a few drawings from Edgemoor, and no contracts, then seriously, you will refuse to support a better plan for a remodel, with a vote and real planning, in 2018?? What's the big rush?

No rush. We've been working on this for 4+ years. We expected a remodel and pushed for one. Then OUR consultants told us that given the unique design and other issues, a new terminal would provide both a cheaper, better and longer term solution for airlines and the city.

Southwest Airlines has never requested a pilot's lounge at KCI. Not sure where you are getting your information. As for crowding... we were already in Terminal B. We expanded service. Delta purchased Northwest and moved that service to their facilities in B. Now we are flying larger planes. This is why a terminal that was not as crowded 5 years ago now needs a solution that a remodel cannot solve.

I hope this helps. Have a nice weekend.

  17. @5:08
    1. Issue remains regardless of new 'port or not. This is business.
    2. Ticket prices may not increase but associated fees certainly will. The way providers and the general public define ticket prices is certainly different. I call it as "what comes out of my pocket to fly", not "ticket price w/o any fees".
    3. N/A If they want to expand, there is plenty room avail., if more want to come in, hey, more room for them too. The only thing that limits the airport size/function is the runway system, which is up to standard for this hub size and will not change with new 'port.
    4. I would postulate that was more geographical location than design. SW doesn't even classify us as a hub or focus City.
    5. Again, business planning/industry market nothing to do with shiny new toy or not.
    6. I would argue this has little to do with SW and more on the "landlord" (avi dept) who certainly has an agenda.
    7. Ehh, if SW can get a new bldg without investing anything, why WOULDN'T they want one? If your landlord said, hey guys, we're building a new shiny space with new facade, etc. and we're not going to increase your rents; would you argue against that?
    8. Pilots lounge, not affected by new shiny thing, TT is right, they could have space in Term B. Newer larger planes? Dafuq does that even mean? SW has all 737 variants, "continental" planes. KCI/MCI is already rated for larger intercontinental (read international) planes and flight. SW isn't using larger planes that require larger gates/runways/taxiways/etc. I don't think they even directly operate int'l flights with their fleet. There are 737 series that are technically capable of int'l flights, but that isn't the typical big-body int'l plane. Don't need a remodel for overcrowding in the most popular terminal. Bring B back into service and give SW the entirety of A.

    ReplyDelete
  18. SW does fly their own planes on their intl routes. Still 737s but they have phases out the smaller capacity 300 series. They're now all 737-700/800/MAX. Longer, more seats, more people in same waiting area.

ai very much appreciate 5:08 answering my questions, and the need to remain anonymous, tho a nom de plume makes this bog much more engaging to follow. You still ahve to run the gauntlet of Captcha signs and cars, so in the future, pick a personality.

To me, the biggest reveal was question #7, claiming there was no rush to jam this in for November 2017. Clearly, Sly James decided HE had to jam it in. Against the judgment of the late Steve Glorioso, who insisted the campaign needed more time to develop support.

So, as we now see, if and when this fails, which is has a big chance of happening, it is all Sly James fault. He rushed the election, even after he was caught by the council and the media trying to hand $400 grand in excess interest to his benefactors, Burns & Mac and their minionette/marionette, little jack Merriman and Americo Insurance. Fascinating convo tonight.

  22. One more question for you, 5:08--
    A. KCI is owned by the city thru the Aviation Dept. Agreed?
    B. The city of KCMO is self-insured. agreed?

    C. And another party, even the financier of bonds, cannot buy the insurance policy, because that would be tantamount to encouraging destruction or arson or setting up any number of calamitous situations where they would collect.
    Agreed?

    D. If there is a calamity of destruction, including terrorism because the single terminal would clearly be a much richer targer,
or an earthquake (we ARE in the fault line for the New Madrid fault, which last erupted during World War 1, and the Missouri River ran backwards, or anything else--
then the CITY TAXPAYERS WOULD BE ON THE HOOK TO IMMEDIATELY REPAIR OR REPLACE THE BILLION DOLLAR NEW KCI. Agreed?

In other words, the taxpayers might not be on the line for the first remodel, but would definitely, and legally mandated to be on the hook for repair or rebuild after that.

To all the anonymous woman hater, Kansas hater trolls and snipers, good morning. Have you nothing to add intellectually or factually to the debate? Have you made a yard sign? Had a discussion with a neighbor? You poor pathetic things, you.

Do you tell Kristi Wyatt Smith, at KCAEDC, inside the Chamber, her opinion does not matter--because she too lives in Kansas? I'm betting you don't, because you are not a leader in the greater KC area, you are a fat schlub who hasn't had a hug in years, let alone other demonstrations of human kindness.

Invent a name. Post a picture of your own. Make a contribution. Make a comment that is ON TOPIC.

Tell ya what. If the airport is defeated Nov. 7, I'll post a new photo. And bake you some cookies. Think of me as Betsy Ross. Doing my part so the boys can march around with guns loaded.

  28. The Aviation Department carries its own General Liability policy and Property Insurance. So again you are wrong. The City is self insured for some vehicles. The rest of your statements are desperately wrong.

  29. The airlines should pay 100% of the cost, it is one of their cost of doing business. Why do cities have to foot the bill airlines are not the NFL.
