TKC READER LOSES CHILL OVER SHAWNEE INVESTMENT IN OLD SCHOOL MOVIE THEATER AMID THE NETFLIX ERA!!!

AWESOME insight into the local tax & spend game in the suburbs as this old school "event space" play in addition to still showing movies irks one of our denizens:

"The Shawnee city council has to be the dumbest governing body ever in the history of mankind. ANOTHER investment in a movie theater that will be bankrupt in less than 10 years. Thank you for being so freakin' stupid not understanding that Netflix is the movie business of the future."

Shawnee invests in historic Aztec Theatre - Kansas City Business Journal

The historic Aztec Theatre, which has sat as silent as a Charlie Chaplin movie for decades, may be back by popular demand soon in downtown Shawnee. Thanks to pledges of community support and a $250,000 grant the Shawnee City Council approved on Monday, three Shawnee businessmen plan to buy and renovate the single-screen movie house and have it reopened as soon as next April.

  1. Sometimes, people grow tired of staring into their cell phones.
Besides, this is a theater? A place to hold live performances? Why would this not be valuable to any community?

  2. They should show porn movies every Friday and Saturday night. And sell drugs and booze at the concession stand. It would probably do ok.

  3. I saw many a movie and live bands on stage there some years ago. Not sure a redo will work guess we just have to wait and see what they do with the ole place.

  5. The Shawnee city council has to be the dumbest governing body ever in the history of mankind... notwithstanding the City Council of Kansas City.

  6. This seems like the perfect thing to spend a bit of money on. A classic old marquee, right on Johnson Drive in the heart of a city that needs to renovote it's little downtown.

It's only a single screen 400 seater. I hope any renovation allows for multiple use.

It would be a great live music theater as well.
