TKC LABOR DAY QUESTION: KANSAS CITY ANTI-UNION TOY TRAIN STREETCAR?!?!

When we talk about support for organized labor and collective barging, the sordid subject of streetcar transit reveals that Kansas City leaders are moving away from support for unions in building and maintaining the toy train.

Quick review . . .

- Local labor criticized the selection of a contractor who utilized many non-union workers in the construction of the streetcar.

- Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1287 filed a lawsuit against and hoped to delay the kick-off of the streetcar due to threats to KCMO union bus drivers who not only didn't get first crack at streetcar jobs but also confronted the threat of fewer drivers thanks to cuts following the establishment of the toy train route.

- Don't forget that THE KANSAS CITY TOY TRAINS ARE IMPORTED SPANISH JUNK which constantly breaks down. Like it or not, it's kind of a slap in the face that Kansas City's signature transit line is IMPORTED.

Remember that a lot of voters chose Prez Trump over Hillary Clinton because of his promises of economic nationalism.

Here in Kansas City the streetcar runs primarily on political spin which powers development schemes and steers away controversy that includes a great many slights to this cowtown's longstanding support of organized labor.

You decide . . .

  1. I would agree if the streetcar was really transit. It's not. It's a tourist line that's more like a fancy tram. To that end, it's successful at what it does.

    1. Be fair, the streetcar jobs were open and fairly hired everyone. The complaint that bus drivers didn't get first dibs on the jobs did not resonate with many people. I would rather the streetcar hire the BEST person for the position.

    2. streetcar also hired some union workers.

It's good to have a mix in there. Too bad it was an out of town firm. That's the real kick in the pants to Kc. It's not a mistake that we should repeat with the airport.

  2. Houston will probably absorb any free toy train extension money so the train crew better get busy with the crowd funding website.

  7. It's beyond comical and embarrassing that in KCMO, a little bug that tries so very very hard to make believe it's a big-time urban success, a change in THE streetcar schedule is actually reported on the local television news.
Some of these breathless downtown boosters really should get out and visit some real cities.
It might help them put their fantasyland concept in some context.
    Probably not, though.
