Solar Tech Stays Winning: 6¢ Per Kilowatt-Hour In Kansas City

The local pricetag for alternative energy surpasses DOE expectations. Check this note on challenges that still confront widespread use:

Solar now costs 6¢ per kilowatt-hour, beating government goal by 3 years

On Tuesday, the Department of Energy (DOE) announced that utility-grade solar panels have hit cost targets set for 2020, three years ahead of schedule.

  1. Yes electricity with these solar panels now costs 6 cents per kilowatt hour in government calculation. However to get that raw number you have to buy a 15000 KW panel (average single home usage in Louisiana) which costs near $51,000 before any maintenance. Then you have to figure that installation will triple the price of your home owner insurance and the electric company will buy the excess power (which will be none) at 6 cents and sell it to other consumers at $29.00 minimum. In the mean time your tax dollars are being wasted subsidizing a sub industry that is under little pressure to actually operate like a real business and make a profit or demonstrate that you will actually come out ahead after real costs. The real cost per kilowatt isn't even close to being on the same planet with 6 cent kilowatt costs - as any moron with an abacus can see,

  2. Cheap China made solar yard lights in your sunny windows by day=really cheap (almost FREE!) night lights.

Summer clearance prices now at big box and hardware stores, or get them at the "dollar" stores.

  3. 9:37 is correct, then numbers I see from the promoters are much more than 6 cents and that is after assuming huge tax credits and that the panels will be efficient for 20 years or more with no repairs. In time solar will probably improve and the market will drive down prices but for now in this area its more of a novelty than an investment.

  4. 9:37, can you think of an industry that the government doesn't subsidize?

  7. 11:34 The government never gave me a dime to make a porn movie no matter how hard I tried to employ those poor ghetto hoes. I am now trying to get subsidized by requesting grant money to study the shagging habits of future Planned Parenthood health care clients and their OFF'D spring.
