In Defense Of Opioids & Big Pharma
As always, our blog community is dedicated to looking for the ALTERNATIVE PERSPECTIVE ON ALL TOPICS and this note sent our way certainly qualifies as such . . .
In fairness, take a look:
"I appreciate you covering this sort of issue, but at the same time it's important to note that well over 85% of any increase in "opioid deaths" are from illicit fentanyl and not from prescription opioids. I am a researcher in this topic, and the nuance is important. Further, 89% of opioids that end up on the street are from thefts of pharmacies and hospitals and the like. Chronic pain patients that receive opioid analgesics are being lumped in with the people dying from overdoses when there is very little overlap, and as a result many states have restricted opioid prescribing despite the fact that fever than 3% of people who use opioids long term ever become addicted to their medications. Despite these facts, misconceptions have persisted and caused a great deal of harm to people suffering from pain, including many deaths from untreated pain (which result in death frequently, especially when people have had their pain relieved (and the length of their life extended) and are suddenly tapered, as has been happening all over the U.S.. A little bit of nuance goes a long way when talking about this issue. Thanks for your consideration."
