Craig Glazer: Will Fans Still Come Out To See Royals And Say Good-Bye?

The attendance is down quite a bit from even last season when the Royals finished .500. Last year the Royals drew over 2.5 million, clearly on the heat of winning the world series in 2015. This year fans began to realize the Royals were toast about a month ago, drawing just over 2 million this season thus far. Yes there are a few games left, like ten and the Royals can get about another 200-250,000 added still far short of last year, but not bad with a sub .500 team, right.

The question is: Are the Fans going to come out just to say good-bye to what is left of the world series core team? Remember other than Eric Hosmer, the rest will be somewhat affordable to bring back next year. The two remaining big names are 'Moose' and Lorenzo Cain, right?

Moose is not likely to hit 40 home runs this season, he was hot the first half of the year and since the all star break has struggled to hit 10 homers. Buyers don't see him as a big time power hitter, he is a solid third baesman, hits around .260-.270 with decent power. They look at his entire career, in his case this year may be a one off season with the high 30's in home runs, plus he is oft injured. Had Moose hit plus 40, batted closer to .290 and driven in over 100 runs, perhaps the 100 million dollars would be there for him somewhere, as it is for Hosmer. Moose looks like a 50-70 million dollar man for say 4-5 year deal, kinda like Alex Gordon. He likely will stay if Royals match or maybe get close on other offers. Moose is not Hosmer, doesn't long for the national spot light as much, not a playboy wanting to date stars not tv news girls and so on. Eric will get around 150 million for a long term deal, likely will go with Yanks. As for Lorenzo Cain, he is already getting over 10 million a year now. Lorenzo is entering his mid 30's a good hitter .280 plus with some power, maybe 15-20 homers and decent RBI count. His big strength is he is an outstanding outfielder to go with a solid bat. I think he'd like to move on, a matter of money, how long a deal and what team wants him. Again Royals could keep him if they want too. Sal Perez already has a long deal here and stays to lead the team in the years to come with 'Two Hit Whitt.' Keeping these players didn't work so my guess is the expensive ones will be gone. Royals might try and keep 'Moose' for fans sake like Alex. My guess is now due to wanting the money for younger guys down the line. We have no real pitchers of value anymore. Thus Jason Vargas could be gone. He finished the season on a down note.

So will the fans come out the last two weeks to say GOOD-BYE and thank say thank you. Do we return to games of 10,000 and less during the week, I'd say yes. The Brett Royals ended in 1985 with a world series win. George and others stayed for several more years, we contended but no playoffs anymore and then fell to the bottom for decades. This might be the case now. We have no Eric Hosmers coming up soon, not sure about finding young pitching...that's on a wing and a prayer.

Hey these guys gave us 2014 and 2015. It was a nice break from years of losing and not mattering, so they deserve our thanks. So post the Hosmer years in your memory books and soon it will be.."Eric Hosmer again voted to the American League All Star team...hey remember he started with Kansas City." Small markets are tough, boy does Kansas City have great fans though.

  1. I will agree that KC has great fans, but only when the team is winning. When there is any doubt or a real challenge, the fair weather fans go back to their suburban lives and little league.

    1. Did not realize that attendance had taken that big of a hit. And they don't even protest during the national anthem. Imagine that?

    2. These guys got paid better, they won't stick around KC like the Brett Royals. Most of them want to be out of town the second the season ends. They are rarely seen locally. The have no interest in KC as a community. Give the old timers that one at least.

  3. While top Royals players will hit the road, so will top players of other teams. It's all about the Benjamins - lots of them. KC will pick up some of those and who knows, maybe get competitive again.

  4. Good post Craig!

I think a lot of the fans held the team back, Dayton had his hands tied with some of the bad PR before the trading deadline. Now that the season's over, I think the real fans realize that it's time to trade up and move people around. Nothing wrong with that.

  5. I think KC might have to wait another 32 years before they see the World Series again.

  12. Royals had their day, they have to keep up with the times if they want to make it back to the big show. Just like everybody else.

  13. There are plenty of teams out there who wish they could win one world series ever twenty years. Expecting a consistent championship team is just dreaming. In a puissant market like KC it is an hallucination.

  14. Adrain 8:22 PM is right and that's what I was telling everyone back in '14-'15 that the going to the WS for the Royals might not happen again for another 30 years so remember it now to tell to your children and their kids because it will be another long, long dry spell until it happens again.

Probably half the people that post in this forum will be six feet under by the time it happens again.

Sorry to sound gloom and doom, just being a realist here.
