CELEBRATE!!! URBAN PLANNERS REDISCOVER BUSES!!!

AWESOME reader suggestion as the new hotness in public transit is a bit of a retro rediscovery and realization that getting people where they want to go is way more important than development scheme. Take a look:

Buses, Yes Buses, Are 'the Hottest Trend in Transit'

A few years ago, as the Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) was marking the 40th anniversary of its bus service in the Columbus area, a new employee came into the office of Curtis Stitt, the agency's president and CEO. She brought him a copy of a 1974 annual report that she had stumbled upon while going through the archives.

  1. But if there is no track to follow, how do they know where to go?

  2. The streetcar seven are not going to like this.

  3. Are you saying that those who have been advocating expansion of MAX services and electric shuttles in high density areas are ahead of the curve and leading this city to be more cool than Portland?

How is that more cool than bringing back retro-tech that our grandparents tossed in the garbage can of progress?

  4. I hope one of these buses runs over Travis Kielce and Marcus Petersucker and Clark Kunt

  5. ^^^^and you too...but since you're likely a geriatric shut-in, the chances of that are pretty low. DANG!

  6. This is what happens when you have a city where adults are in charge as opposed to nostalgia-ridden small town urban wanabees.

  7. I challenge people on here to ride the bus for an hour or so to see what they think.

Watch your wallet r purse. Careful not to touch those dirty seats for touching snot and getting a virus. People starring at you sizing you up to see if they should mug you or not after you get off.

Its full of creepy people, oh yeah and always someone asking for money.

  8. I guess Sly better plan another trip to Spain to find buses, eh?

  9. Buses making a comeback and now more millenials deciding to live in the suburbs.
Not good news for a heavily-indebted downtown KCMO.
    Fads come and fads go.
But long-term public debt bleeds the general fund for years after the music has stopped and new needs have arisen.
The comment on adult supervision is right on.

  10. Excellent comments, @11:25, well said!

If I may I'd like to add that giving away your (and other's) tax revenues for twenty-five years is not the finest example of Civic Responsibility either. "Oh, but if we don't give them TIF, they won't build it!"...BS of the rankest sort. If it makes economic sense it will be built. We've recently seen a Hotel built downtown without one cent of Public Incentives o TIF funding, haven't we? Why do we need to provide those for another Hotel group? It is just to show that our Politicians are "honest" (meaning that they stay 'Bought')?

IMHO, a Salad Bowl for Dinosaurs and a Drunk Tank for ageing Frat Boys and Sorority Girls (from an out-of-State University.no less) does not constitute a "Downtown Renaissance"! The reason that so many buildings are available for "lofting" is that there is no longer an "economy" left Downtown, and those Office Buildings are setting empty!

But, what the hell does it matter what I think, I don't have the financial resources to afford any representation in Kansas City's City Government.

  11. 11:01: So you've not been on a bus since 1965?

  12. 11:01, I've ridden KCATA buses and have yet to experience what you describe. If you don't like to rub elbows with people who can't afford a car, take a cab or a Uber, but not a streetcar.

  13. ^^^^^^+1

11:01 does not ride the bus because 11:01 cannot figure out how to use one.

  14. 11:01 would freak out on a New York subway.

  15. Geezer Hater 9:56 always takes the bus. It's where he picks up the little girls that he seduces.
