Today's Kansas City Lesson In Diversity

Possibly a bit of proof the progressives are just as prejudiced as everyone else given that so many of them are counting people of color as a means of justifying their politics. BUT, we'll give public TV journalism the benefit of the doubt as they talk numbers and condescendingly reflect upon their white guilt. Checkit:

Which Schools Are Integrated?

Lisa Gooden was set on finding the right school for her children in Kansas City. The choices were complex - public, private, charter, signature - but she felt good about all the buildings she visited.

  1. Leawood isn't really. Guess which school in Kansas is ranked consistently number one in the state and ranked nationally? Leawood. Guess which schools are full of "diversity" and are unaccredited? KCSD. Black people ruin schools, just like they ruin everything else. Shawnee Mission schools used to be tops in the nation and guess what happened? The local diversity moved into the apartments and duplexes and drove the district down. Hell, there was a time around the late 90's you couldn't wear your own letter jacket to SM West because of gang problems. That steep decline took less than 10 years. I know because I was there.

  3. Here is another thing about the black people coming into white schools. Back in the 70's Lee's Summit had a black girl come into the district and I had a class with her. Of course she had an attitude and a huge chip on her shoulder. I was told by the teacher of that class she had failed, but was passed because she was black. That came from the teacher himself. They didn't want to cause a problem,so they passed her. She didn't last long. But take a white kid to J.S. Chick and see what happens to them, they refer to that school as for black kids only.

  6. I find this subject difficult to comprehend because of my personal history. I grew up in Northeast Missouri, going to rural "one-Room" schools from the 1st through 8th Grades, and moving from school to school as my Father's employment (Coal Mining) required. As best I can recall, I attended 19 different rural schools. The point of my rambling is, those schools were integrated! These were simply too few African-Americans living in the area to make separate schools practical.

I now live in the Northland, in the North Kansas City School District, and there are schools here with higher levels of diversity than most other Metro areas - North Kansas City High School ranks no.1 in diversity, Winnetonka ranks no.8. These schools achieve high academic levels (NKCHS is one of the ten IB Schools in the Metro), so it's hard for me to see how you can equate diversity with low performance.

I personally believe that much of the problems facing Kansas City, and especially the KC School District, are a result of the Federal Court takeover of the District in the 1970s. This stems in large part from my personal experience.
In the early 70s, my wife and I were searching for a home in the Old Northeast area. We wanted to buy in the area near James School for sentimental reasons, my wife having fond memories of attending there. As our daughter approached school age, we made inquiries and discovered to our shock that, under the plan imposed by the Court, she would attend James for Kindergarten and 1st Grades, then be bussed to another location for 2nd and 3rd (as necessary to achieve racial balance), then transferred as necessary after that! We immediately started searching the suburbs for a location where she could be considered to be a schoolchild and not a commodity or playing piece, and found a house, better maintained and cheaper than anything we had seen in the Northeast, located two blocks from the school (integrated, by the way) that she attended K-6!

I do have sympathy for the Kansas City School District and their ongoing struggles to deal with the devastation that the Federal Policies of the 1970s wrought on the entire Metro Area, but my point is, there are other cards in the Deck when you are discussing schools, so you don't always have to lead with the Race Card.

To do so is just another example of Journalistic Laziness.

  7. If the school is in the KC school district does it really matter which one your kids attend? We have proven over and over we will produce fucking idiots in any of them.

  8. Thanks for your account, 9:41. I had a similar experience at about the same time as yours. Lived then in NE KCMO, tried to enroll my kid in public school kindergarten, was told he was too young to attend. The next year I tried again and was told he was too old. Said fuck it, opted for private schools (all classes were multi racial) and have never regretted the decision. Liberal do-gooders and a clueless federal judiciary killed the KCMOSD, and it will never recover.

  13. African-american teens these days have a really tough situation. Most non-African-americans are suspicious of them and jump to the conclusion that they could be "bad" kids. But if you get to know these young people and take the time to really speak with them in their own language, you will find they are the gentlest teens around. I've seen this myself when volunteering at my Episcopal-Unitarian church-synagoge. We had a weekly program where we would host inner-city African-american-teens in arts and crafts Saturdays.

When the teens first arrived there would be some tension and often times, because of cultural mis-understandings, some of our volunteers were hurt. I remember in particular a little, petite 64-year-old volunteer named Barbara. She had not yet received much training and I guess because of that she was asking the teens not to dance on the desks in the craft center. The children really went after her, knocking her down and jumping on her. One of the teens got hold of some caustic substance used in the crafts work and sprayed it in her eyes, while others used matches to set her on fire. None of this was intentional. It was just a misunderstanding and most likely resulted from the exuberance of the kids.

We had another situation that was again caused by a careless white volunteer who just didn't make the effort needed to understand the kids. Often African-american teens can speak in a style that is unique to their southern dialects. We all need to understand that language has nuances. Anyway, these kids use the term "muthafugga" a lot. It's a term of friendship in the African-American community. They will shout, "yo, my muthafugga nigga" and this is meant as a friendly hello and how are you. We have had many older white volunteers that thought it appropriate to respond with "yo, nigga, what up". That's when the beat down begins. We've lost probably three to four volunteers to long hospital stays because of this simple misunderstanding. The injuries have ranged from multiple stab wounds, broken eye sockets, ears torn off, fingers broken, punctured lungs, dislocated spines, skull fractures and brain bleeding, vaginal contusions, first degree burns, loss of eye sight and hearing, paralysis, brain damage, herpes, HIV, horrible skin rashes, loss of memory, shattered pelvis, severe blood loss, infections and poisoning with bleach. All of it was avoidable, if the volunteer simply showed the teens some respect.
