Fight For $15: We WON... Whoops.

Over the past 3 years, Tony's KC has posted no less than 10 stories about how we support low-skill workers and anything they can do to improve their lot in life.

We've highlighted that raising the minimum wage, while making Sly and our ruling liberal elite that run our worlds feel better, has the exact opposite effect on the people intended to help.

Instead of pointing to past TKC articles and saying, "We told you so", here's a fresh look at what the low-skilled workers won at the polls last week.

The quote below is from an article that cold be titled, "Economic Reality Bites"

"Cities that took the Fight for $15 bait are coming to realize that, in the real world, forcing businesses to raise wages for low-skilled workers costs jobs and hurts the very people it's supposed to help.

The biggest blow came when economists at the University of Washington studied Seattle — which had boosted its $9.47 minimum wage to $11 in 2015 and $13 last year, on its way up to $15 for all companies in the city by 2021 — and looked at the wage's impact on city workers.

What the economists found was that low-wage workers lost more in hours than they gained in hourly wages."

So congratulations on your $15 an hour victory; ignoring reality, and Tony's KC numerous warnings, may cost you your job.

  1. Basic economics and the law of supply and demand. Government inflating labor prices will lessen their value and smart business will find a way to get around the mandate.

  9. I haven’t had a conversation one with anybody that thinks this forced minimum wage fiasco is going to do anything to benefit Kansas City. In fact they speak just the opposite. That is why I think the state of Missouri passed the law that they did in an effort to keep things under control and not watch businesses located along state lines jump ship to the other side where there not being forced to pay wages that go far and beyond the national recommendations. Kansas City is full of companies that hire a lot of non-skilled laborers, if the same companies are forced to all of a sudden pay out higher wages they will start losing money if they have existing contracts out there that are based on the current salaries that employees are being paid. Do all these people that voted for this pay raise not stop and think of the backdraft this is going to have on everybody not just on a few people? Based on my calculations, this new vote that was passed by the citizens of Kansas City, and if the state allows it, means everybody that was being paid a minimum wage only will get a raise of about 29%. In short let’s say you pay five dollars for your hamburger this week and after the wages go up that same burger is going to end up costing you somewhere between $6.50 and $7.00 or there about rounding it all off. Welcome to economics 101 where if it costs more to generate that which you buy the cost will only be passed on to you the consumer.

  10. Just amother instance of Kansas City cutting off its nose to spite its face. Hurting small business is a bad idea for everyone.

  11. Why wasn't the local media echoing this study before the election? Because they are a bunch of fucking libtards that is why. Well before the vote there were close to a half dozen posts right here in this blog talking about the study and the cost to unskilled workers and no one picked up on it until weeks after the vote? Well, I TOLD YOU SO!!!!!!

Thanks God there is a state government to show some sense of responsibility and stability in this situation.

  16. the minimum wage determined by the MARKET seems to be going up already.

there may be a need for an increase, however.

more important, there's a need to help people enter the work force and become employed in a first job.

where the heck are the great society social engineers in all this?

all i can say is god bless the young people working for a low wage.

  23. I am pleasantly surprised to have stumbled upon this website. While there are many things I disagree with over the week I've been reading it, I'm stunned to find that your pieces on economics are far BETTER than the Kansas City Star or ANY TV or Radio news station's reporting. I'm not sure if Tony is writing the posts, or if someone else, but they are DEAD on accurate.

    Great work.
