KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The 45th chief of police for Kansas City was sworn in Tuesday. Major Rick Smith is a 29-year veteran with the police department and was sworn in at police headquarters at 9:30 a.m. Smith has been with the force for 29 years.

ReplyDeleteThat new top cop apparently just can't look like a top cop in ANY situation. Gawd, I feel like a millennial basing something on looks, but shoot, the police chief needs to LOOK and BE tough as nails in this City. It appears Chief Smith possesses neither of those qualities.

My favorite Charlie Parker story concerns his request to his wife when he found out he was dying... "Whatever you do, don't let me be buried in Kansas City"! In case you weren't aware, he hated the way he had been treated by the Black musical community here.
ReplyDeleteThat fits well with the history of Highway 71. Bruce Watkins fought City Hall for decades, trying to stop the destruction of neighborhood cohesion it would cause. He failed, and expressed on his deathbed that this failure was the biggest regret of his lifetime.
After his death, his bitterest opponent in the fight, Emmanuel Cleaver became Mayor and named the road that tore the African-American Community apart "The Bruce R. Watkins Freeway"!
