REALITY CHECK: WILL EPIC KANSAS CITY $15 MINIMUM WAGE VICTORY POWER FIGHT AGAINST JEFF CITY GOP???
Just as we reported . . . The minimum wage increase in Kansas City was an easy win at the ballot box.
Take a look . . .
Social media support and celebration of the victory . . .
Kansas City voters cast their ballots overwhelmingly for a $15 minimum wage today. It won by nearly 40 points.
Now it's time for the GOP-controlled state government in Missouri to heed the will of voters and withdraw their anti-democratic bill banning cities from raising their own minimum wages.
Dr. Vernon Percy Howard Jr., president of SCLC-GKC
"The victory is far more than symbolic and is shows overwhelming support in Kansas City for a fair wage . . . It is a moral victory . . . This should motivate our representatives in Jefferson City to act upon the will of the people . . . "
However . . . Voters have known all along that Missouri rules against municipalities raising their own wages will impact this decision negatively.
"Ignoring a law Missouri legislators enacted earlier this year that bars cities from setting their own rates. Under the proposal approved Tuesday, Kansas City's minimum wage would increase from $7.70 to $10 on Aug. 24. But it may only be in place for a few days because the new state rules take effect on Aug. 28."
A couple of our commenters offer . . .
"The sad truth is that with a $15 minimum wage, we need a street car to transport all of the working poor to their new jobs outside of Kansas City."
"Talk about the real questions, are these votes going to hold up in court?"
And so we ask:
WILL THIS EFFORT POWER MISSOURI CHANGE OR SIMPLY LEAD TO MORE KANSAS CITY "FIGHT FOR $15" DISAPPOINTMENT???
