KCFD STAYS WINNING OVERTIME!!!

The annual discussion of shift switching and system-gaming that never really changes despite tax fighter frustration:

Kansas City Fire Department overtime costs climb

Kansas City is spending millions of dollars on overtime for the city's firefighters. Now, the city is looking for ways to reduce that amount. The Kansas City Fire Department has already blown through the money budgeted for overtime pay this year, and it's something that's been happening for the last several years.

It's a strange paradox, where some of your wages are taken out in taxes to pay your wages.

Given the above, you should always vote yourself a raise whenever you can, because your taxes are always going to be less than your wages. What about the other tax payers? Fuck em, they should have become fireman. The best job an uneducated man can have, plus you can retire after 30 years when you're still only fifty. Only policemen & teachers compare, but they actually have to work on a regular basis under difficult conditions.

  14. This website censors comments like they've been given a cease and desist letter but they don't have the balls to do allow the right thing. Grow a pair.

With regard to the article: When your house is burning down, do you really care whether or not the city is paying time and a half of double time to those fire fighters trying to put the fire out? NO, you don't. In fact there are logistical reasons to staff lean and rely on OT: less benefits/salary to pay out over a period of time etc.

This fire problem is a complex problem for this area that most people can not and will not understand. There are multiple solution's the Fire Departments are going to have to work towards ... some of which became a problem a couple decades ago ... it'll be interesting to see how they handle the next year or two. Change is coming.

  17. firefighting only thge 23rd most hazardous occupation, per OSHA.

minimum wage store clerks, cabbies etc far more deaths.

  18. There's hazards to FD that yokels forget. Besides potential and obvious dangers of serious injuries from burns, falls, inhalations, structures collapse, explosions, involvement in traffic accidents, hazardous materials exposures, and biological contaminants or disease exposures WHILE performing duties---there are the post incidence risks of damaging particulates on apparel, tools, rigs, and body parts. Plus, the stress of extreme adrenaline spikes with erratic sleep cycles can FUBAR even FIT fire peeps. Add to that the shift life schedule that causes missed significant events like fun parties for whatever birthday you missed for each kiddie or spouse, weddings, retirements, reunions, etc. So, try to understand that a FD vocation is not easy.

  19. There are many vocations where individuals dedicate themselves to the work and life falls apart, not just firefighters.

I don't intend to be critical of firefighters in the KC area but the important and lacking ability that is readily observable: root cause analysis. If they would do a better job of thinking through why there is an OT problem they would probably realize its not a staffing issue, its a prevention issue.
