Threats to arrest convicted sex offenders at City Union Mission prompt federal lawsuit

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office is targeting some sex offenders for arrest at the City Union Mission because it sits near a park, according to a federal lawsuit alleging that the practice violates the charity's constitutionally protected rights of religious freedom.

  4. You should see the thugs and obese cows that hang around that park. Talk about a magnet for crime.

  5. This is something I studied in depth, and have served on a city council. Here is an easy solution: take down the playground equipment. (There is no pool.) It's not great or safe playground equipment, anyway. They didn't put in the $75,000 rubber matting and all the fancy new uber-safety components.

Sex offender regulation, post-release, has a huge loophole to benefit the prosecution: the presence of a pool or playground equipment. That's why so many vestpocket or underused parks suddenly install a jungle gym! (They did it in Brookside...at least two places.) And of course, KCMO doesn't build public pools and hasn't since the 50's, due to racism. White folks refuse to swim with black kids.

So take down the swingset. This is not Mission Hills or the Plaza or Brookside, folks. It's near City Union Mission. Released sex offenders need housing SOMEWHERE--because the law does not allow eternal punishment and confinement. We're not willing to pay the taxes for that. So this area is probably as good a place for them as any in the city of KCMO. Rather than other neighborhoods. City Union Mission at least makes an attempt at rehabilitation and housing and spiritual support.

It's not worth a lawsuit. I get that Sheriff Mike Sharp is following the law. He can solve this. Work with Parks and Rec at KCMO and then lets move on to other issues.
