TKC QUESTION AFTER BLOODY WEEKEND: SHOULD MAYOR SLY JAMES FOCUS ON KANSAS CITY HOMICIDE CRISIS INSTEAD OF CORPORATE DEVELOPMENT AGENDA?!?!

Everyone knew this was going to be a violent and deadly weekend leading up to the 4th of July but the level of carnage and gunfire in Kansas City over the past few days has shocked even the most cynical local observers.

On Friday our blog community warned of the danger.

And now . . .

KANSAS CITY MURDERS HAVE SKYROCKETED THIS YEAR OVER LAST FOLLOWING A TRIPLE MURDER WEEKEND AND RAMPANT GUNFIRE!!!

Locals are playing games with the numbers but unofficially the homicide count stands at 72 compared to 51 at this time last year which is more than a 40% increase using basic math AND one of those percentage increase calculators online.

But let's go beyond numbers and talk priorities . . .

At the outset of the weekend Mayor Sly took a stroll near the park to talk with a Southland neighborhood about crime. The PR stunt was well-received and it's good to see Kansas City's top elected official interact with communities outside of the downtown loop . . . HOWEVER . . .

Over the past few years Mayor Sly's legislative agenda has been dominated by a push for the downtown convention hotel, the new airport and support for the toy train streetcar and its extension with very little regard for the increased quotient of deadly violence in Kansas City under his watch.

Some claim the mayor doesn't care, many argue that his loyalty lies with corporate patrons while others suspect his interest in higher office after his term ends Kansas City . . . While venturing a guess at his motives is pure speculation, there is no denying that Mayor Sly James as worked much harder on behalf of corporate development interests than confronting the rising level of violence on local streets.

In fact, under Mayor Sly's watch and during his tenure as a member of the police board, the number of police officers on Kansas City streets has declined to a ten year low according to recent statements from Kansas City law enforcement union leaders.

To wit . . .

IS IT TIME FOR KANSAS CITY TO DEMAND MAYOR SLY PAY MORE ATTENTION TO MURDER ON LOCAL STREETS RATHER THAN ENRICHING CORPORATE CRONIES?!?!

While not everyone in Kansas City uses the airport, the streetcar or downtown hotels; the level of local murder and violence impacts every resident throughout the metro. And so, Kansas City should ask if we need the mayor serving a select few developers or working to keep ALL of the residents of this town safer.

You decide . . .

  3. You need to be more fair with the mayor. Let's talk about job creation here, you can't just stop violence with police. You need to get people working and invested in their lives and into something besides gangs. Creating more jobs is the way to do that. The mayor is thinking long term and you're just looking at the stats right now.

I'm not saying that the murders don't matter but I'm saying that we have to have the discipline to look at the big picture in Kansas City before we start assigning blame.

  4. I'm saying fuck it. The murders don't matter. Why should we be all tied up worried and fretting about these murders? We can't do anything about it and frankly who gives a shit I'm all for the the mayor doing whatever the hell he wants to do. Let them kill all they want to kill we have more important things to worry about .

  5. What jobs is he creating? I agree violence prevention doesn't begin & end with police but we are not even tackling those other symptoms. It feels our strategy is just to "price out" the violence. Make it NKC or Independence problem one day. But that day isn't happening.

  6. ^^^ No jobs, just more press for himself.

  7. Homocides are forgotten about 2 weeks later new airports and toy trains are forever.

  8. Campaign donations mean more to Sly. He's always been about himself since day one. He never promised to do anything about homicides. He's never been interested in the subject. At least he's honest.

  10. I've been out of work and broke and I didn't go out and kill people or steal their property. Jobs will help any city, but what we need is more police and tougher laws. People know they will get a light sentence or get by with whatever they want. Sly James is not good for Kansas City he needs to get out before Kansas City is a waste land, then the problem will be beyond help, people are pulling out of the Plaza due to crime, not near as many people are at the Plaza anymore and the city looks like hell. His big deal is he wants to synchronize the lights on Broadway with go bond money. Sly James even admits he doesn't know what to do about crime. Until he's out, and Kansas City gets better leadership, we are toast.

    1. The call for right laws is as old as the hills. The laws are plenty tough as it is. Prosecution of the laws is the issue.

    2. I think the laws are very clear on homicide, and I don't see prosecutors letting these cases slide no matter who the mayor is? What is clear is that there isn't enough law enforcement and patrol to prevent and catch the murderers. Laws don't need to change, we just need more police on the streets.

  11. About the only way a government "creates" jobs is to hire people themselves.
Of course, as well-run city can create an environment in which private businesses can flourish and grow by providing the kinds of services that residents, businesses, and visitors, all three, find attractive.
At the top of the list is public safety, followed by well-maintained streets and sidewalks, an even and fair tax system, adequate utilities, common sense planning and zoning, predictable trash pick-up, and all the rest.
Who in their right mind would invest their own money and open a business in the part of a city with the level of crime, violence, and homicides that east-side KCMO has year after year?
And instead of touristy streetcars, how about spending transit money on reverse commute buses to get urban core workers to jobs in the suburbs?
KCMO doesn't have a city government that even tries to provide public sector solutions for its residents and businesses.
It has a taxpayer-funded subsidy slush fund for "developers" and a PR operation that tries to convince people that chicken crap is really chicken salad.
    It is a joke.

  12. Safety should always be the number one priority, unless of course your trying to run whitey out of town. That was cleavers plan to begin with and it is working so far, but hey, there goes all your tax paying citizens and this will end up being Detroit all over again.

  13. the local newspaper finally reports what's really going on.

  14. The number of murders is also a function of how bad the aim is and how good the medical facilities are. When shots are fired most people don't know or care how many were killed or wounded. They just know they need to move or do business elsewhere.

Because most thugs don't know how to shoot and use relatively low power handguns the actual deaths are much lower than the number of time shots are fired.

  15. FACT :

Wayyy past time for KCMO Mayor SLY JAMES to be Removed / kicked out of Office , if need be use US Marshalls & State Police and the National Guard to physically remove this Commie Degenerate scumbag !

Sly James is as badd as Chicago's Mayor, Rahm Emmanuel, Commie O'bamas little buddy !!

Time to call in the Missouri GOV., the National GUARD, US Marshalls , State Police and DEA & ATF to forcefully remove the Terrorist in public office in KCMO CITY HALL, Known as SLY JAMES !!

He didn't do such a great job raising his pathetic son, as you all recall too, a few years back which made headlines !!!!!

  16. I don't care what the mayor says. I work in a sector that roughly covers from the Plaza to 63rd, State Line to Cleveland. We very rarely have more than 2 or 3 officers working. We dont have time to do so any self-initiated activity. All night long we are answering calls and writing reports, but there is no way I could look for additional criminal activity. This is nuts, we drive by good car and pedestrian checks, but those who call 911 wouldn't get help. This is crazy, but he mayor won't support getting rid of NOVA. We can't do this alone.

  17. Stop blaming slime after all he is only the mayor

  18. Let him focus on the killing. It won't do any good, but it will limit the amount of time he has to steal from the taxpayers. He won't do it because he doesn't care

  20. Good comments in my opinion.

No one can do anything to fix this.

The Mayor, laws, more cops, nothing will stop the outrageous, disproportionality of African American Criminality until it isn't cool to glorify and lionize the very African American Hip/Hop/Holocaust, Rap culture that produces that very same criminality.

Movies make heroes out of scum. Politicians on the left, apologize and make excuses for criminality because they need the vote. Money, power and sinecure all derive from pretending that that crime is "caused" not "committed". It's guns, or White Privilege, or Institutional Racism, or Micro-Aggressions etc. etc. etc.

The left needs blacks to hate whites and helps demonize whites in movies, commercials, TV shows, books, newspapers, cable TV etc. etc. etc.

This not only provides a de facto excuse for the lack of moral agency that should rest with minorities and the concomitant criminality, it gives those same minorities de facto permission and encouragement to continue to commit crime.

    The Mayor can't do shit.

This is a national problem. There can be no local solution.

However during the election for his first term, your mayor said he would visit the site of every murder.

In its new ad the NRA called on supporters to "assassinate" lawful protesters.

It's because of this terrorist organization that we can't have sane gun laws.

Other countries don't have this problem, because other countries don't have a "Second Amendment" & a terrorist organization masquerading as a patriotic organization.

And with the opioid epidemic they are bringing in serious cash. They drive expensive cars during a drive by. Let the criminals, shoot each other. But when they start attacking law abiding. That's when you shoot them. And women being attacked by men shoot his balls off. Give him something to remember you buy.
