TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! KANSAS CITY STREETCAR EXTENSION CRITICS HOPE AUGUST 8TH ELECTION WILL STOP TOY TRAIN VOTER SUPPRESSION IN ITS TRACKS!!!

An upcoming Kansas City low-turnout vote could fundamentally change how 12th & Oak carries out rail transit schemes.

To wit . . .

KANSAS CITY STREETCAR CRITICS BELIEVE QUESTION 1 IS THEIR BEST CHANCE TO STOP TOY TRAIN PLANNERS FROM EXCLUDING VOTERS!!!

Take a look:

Kansas City August 8th, Sample Ballot

The important part for this streetcar discussion . . .

Question 1: Shall the City of Kansas City prohibit any and all City officers, agents and employees from causing the planning for, construction, preparation for construction, preparation of land, or purchase of land if connected to the expansion of the streetcar system or any new fixed rail transit system, without first gaining voter approval, and establish a penalty of up to $1,000 a day for noncompliance?

Given gerrymandering, late ballots and haphazard taxing district designs, here's what one KC Streetcar critic had to say about the process so far and the proposed change . . .

"Instead of having elections characterized by voter suppression, let’s have free and open elections. If Question #1 passes, the streetcar votes will have to be fair elections. Since the City will not have a public relations campaign to call attention to the Special Election on August 8th, it is important to make sure voters in KCMO are aware of it."

You decide . . .

  1. yes on question 1 is the right thing to do and I'm surprised I haven't seen Sly slam it yet.

But the wording is rather odd. I am guessing they can find a way around it.

    1. I haven't even seen a mailer for this one. Another one of these secret elections? Voting on the streetcar is not a bad thing. But let's not lose our momentum.

    2. 2014, more people voted and 70 percent said they didn't want more streetcar.

Why have a mail in election at all? Having to find a notary and mailing back the ballot is sort of strange. It's better to do it at the polling places like all of the other votes.

  3. I thought Jason Kander lived in KCMO.
I thought his big issue was voter suppression and disenfranchisement.
    And where is he?
In Kansas speaking to the moribund Democratic Party.
In politics, once you've gotten hypocrisy and insincerity down pat, you're good to go!

And we will hound any small business that dares to advertise on the most racist website in town.

  9. ^^^ Hounding small biz. Sounds like a streetcar supporter tactic. Didn't they try to boycott their opposition? Maybe that's why they lost the election in 2014?

  10. The gerrymandering actually hurts the streetcar's chances. I think they could've beat their opposition in an honest election this time around. It makes them look weak to have to run a secret ballot.

  11. @2:05pm
When was the last time anything was done honestly in KCMO government or any issue was actually able to be presented and stand on its own merits?
12th and Oak is nothing more than an ATM machine of taxpayer money that Chamber swells, grifters, fake "developers", make-believe nonprofits, and pretty much anyone else looking for some easily-obtained cash comes for handouts.
KCMO government is where honest elections and well thought-out proposals go to die.

  12. The should be no expansion until the operators of the existing line can show a profit. This City can't afford to give away tourist rides for free.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Trolley does not need to be expanded. This would duplicate an exsisting public transportation option.

  14. I haven't gotten any mailers from City Hall about ''tis upcoming election.
