The Clay Chastain KCMO Streetcar Plan

Our TKC readership reacts to Clay's proposition:

"So I guess the thought is to throw more money at it and maybe it will offer some benefits to KCMO residents at some time in the future. Instead of wasting more taxpayer dollars on obsolete fixed rail technology, should KCMO be investing new technologies including demand response platforms such as Uber? Many major US cities plan to roll out mobile on demand services in the next 5 years and KCMO keeps pushing old technology."

The right transit plan at the right time

In 2001, the Kansas City Regional Transit Alliance stated that light rail, not streetcars or bus rapid transit, was the preferred mode of transit to modernize Kansas City's transportation system. Question 2 on the Aug. 8 ballot, which I placed via petition drive, proposes a rapid citywide rail system.

  1. Yes!
Let's spend less taxpayer money on "fixed guideway systems" and more on "demand response platforms".
The epic battle of buzz words, trendy phrases, and over-the-top claims.
    Sly's KCMO!
    Frosty.

  2. Go to Nashville. Visit the music district. All the tourist from hotels and such have access to shuttles (in the form of golf carts).
    The drivers work for tips.
Anything other than a streetcar (tax money) would be better.

  3. So throw more money at a bad idea (toy train) just because they can't admit it was a bad idea to begin with, god this mayor, city manager and council are worthless

  4. Most of the developers who want the streetcar extension don't even live in Kansas City and won't have to deal with driving on Main street with that thing clogging the streets and making parking difficult. And worse, the sound of the trolley's clank clank horn. Worse than wind chimes.

  5. Presently, the streetcar line is a novelty for tourists rather than an improved transit system that can directly benefit the people.

  6. Remember there is City wide vote on August 8th on Streetcar System Extension – Elections Required. Get to your polling place & cast a ballot. Your vote will help derail streetcar expansion.

  7. Start charging to ride this novelty and see how many people actually use it.

  8. Extend the Streetcar Track seven blocks due North and the problem solves itself.

  10. Agree with 9:54. Its true value will reveal itself in how many (and how much?) people are willing to PAY to use the street car. The fact that it's a taxpayer-supported FREE transportation for (mostly) tourists is absurd.

Hey, if people will pay for it. Great. If not, then we have no business adding extensions.

  11. David Johnson said if they charged people to ride the streetcar nobody would ride it.

    1. Nobody is riding it for FREE, numbers-wise over each week's total operational hours. Events at Sprint Center and at a couple other venues boosts counts, but those totals DO NOT come anywhere close to convincing reasonable people of 20+ million riders per year.
