Kansas City Neighborhood Comeback???

An upbeat story about neighborhood revitalization in the urban core that doesn't start with anti-crime programs but instead with community leaders and urban gardening. Take a look:

This Kansas City neighborhood wrote the blueprint for transforming a community

Yolanda and Alan Young never intended to make Ivanhoe their home. They purchased a two-story, shirtwaist-style house in the Kansas City, Missouri, neighborhood at public auction in 1986, planning to renovate and rent or resell it. They moved in temporarily, then never left. "The grass was tall, and the house was in bad shape," Alan remembers.

  1. The city has spent tens of millions of dollars on the Ivanhoe people, the city drives bulky item trucks through there every day to keep up with the trash, free paint programs, free home repair programs that they can apply for every five years, hell, they don't lift a finger to maintain their own houses and haven't since the program started in the eighties they just call the city. it's just barely a decent neighborhood now after all this time and money. They have helped to run their own scum peeps out so that has helped. Food desert my ass, they have four grocery stores with in three miles of there with a new city backed store opening at Linwood and suspect Ave next year. just because you can't walk to one doesn't make it a food desert.

  2. There's only two grocery stores near me with the closest being 9 miles and the other 12 miles, can I start the whole neighborhood whining to council and mayor and have them build one down the street from me? Never gonna happen

  3. Great article. Keep up the good works and I hope other neighbourhoods follow their lead.

  4. I met Yolanda and Alan back when the water had been running down the street in front of their house for several years. Finally the city came out and repaired the water main and the sewer. It took years for the city to make the block liveable.

  5. Yet, drive through Ivanhoe and looks at the police stats and it still shows and proves Ivanhoe is still an eyesore and draining the City's resources. Margaret May is a politician and because of that, she has the eyes and ears of the media. Don't get it twisted. This is just more puffing from the same people who had a hand in tearing down the community. It's a nice article if you don't have any value for the truth.

  6. Is it a multi criminal/cultural area ?
